A visit to the Lord's on Tuesday felt a bit different. Two weeks back, the neighbourhood was buzzing for the India-England Test at the iconic venue, ticket resellers were on an overdrive and the turnstiles saw thousands go in on what turned out to be a thrilling game of cricket.
Cut to Tuesday, the gates of the Home of Cricket opened again but for the season opener of The Hundred. The venue was shining in its full glory under lights and there was a lot of activity on the concourse where families were out in big numbers for an evening of cricket, even on a weekday. It wasn't as busy as the Test but the numerous food carts and beer taps were in business as usual.

Inside, the largely filled stadium was dancing to the tunes of the DJ and not swaying to the Barmy Army trumpet.
There was a nice fire show after a wicket or a boundary and the occasional fan engagement - loudest fan of the day and random fan cams on the big screen - made sure there was something for everyone. The product is clearly packaged in a manner which appeals to everyone - the cricket enthusiasts and the families.

There were three giant screens inside the stadium and interestingly, two of them only mentioned balls and runs. No batter, bowler names or the details of the innings underway.

No distractions and just one giant screen, on the left of the media centre flashed the detailed scorecard. Unlike the Test, there was a healthy footfall of young children and when they got bored of the cricket, the concourse became their own pitch.

For first-timers, the format will take some time getting used to. The idea of hundred deliveries, no mention of overs requires some attention but once you get the hang of it, cricket, like it always does, takes over.
The first men's competition fixture between London Spirits and Oval Invincibles was a bit dampener as far as cricket is concerned but it was a very healthy turnout with future owners, after the recent investment drive, keeping a close tab from the hospitality suites.
Both teams were unable to complete the quota of hundred deliveries as the London unit was dismissed for 80 off just 94 and Oval had a comfortable chase in just 69 balls. There was no dearth of star power in the middle with Rashid Khan,
David Warner
,
Kane Williamson
and others in action, and there was a loud cheer for the Afghan when his face flashed on the giant screen during a post-match chat.

What do you think about the new format of The Hundred cricket tournament?

Winds of change have already gripped the tournament and while the new owners will come in with a fresh approach and set of ideas, the foremost priority should be to build on the London rivalry. Not an ideal comparison, but at least think on the lines of football. Adequate star power, player continuity and the right direction could make that happen.
There will be challenges: Lack of history, fan connect and continuous engagement but if it is made into a year-long activity instead of just the tournament window, something very big could be developed.

"That looks like the idea but there will be a lot of challenges to have that kind of connection with the people. With the people who feed on Test cricket because of the history and other things. For starters, it just cant be restricted to the tournament's window and that's where the new owners would like to come in. If you work in a particular direction, who knows how big this London rivalry of cricket can become," says an industry source tracking developments in the UK.
The opener ended earlier than usual, the bars were shut at 9pm but the families stuck around for a bit. Cricket continued on the concourse and on the way out, the resellers were still at it. Either looking for spare tickets for tomorrow or selling theirs.

12 years ago! Amid speculation over India future, here's when Virat Kohli last played a List A match

NEW DELHI: Speculation over the ODI futures of and has intensified, but the ( ) appears in no hurry to make a decisive call on the two icons. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now With the August home series against Bangladesh called off, India's next ODI assignment will be an away series against Australia from October 19–25. Whether Kohli and Rohit will feature in ODIs beyond that tour remains uncertain. Poll Should Kohli and Rohit participate in India A matches before the Australia tour? Absolutely, they need match practice Not necessary, they should focus on the main team According to reports, one proposal being discussed in BCCI circles is for the duo to tune up for Australia by featuring in a couple of India A matches against Australia A in Kanpur (September 30, October 3, October 5), coinciding with the senior team's first Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad. An intriguing question — if they need List A match practice — is when Kohli last played such a game outside of ODIs. The answer takes us back 12 years, to the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy in Indore in 2013. Then Delhi skipper Kohli turned out for his state side in a clash against India Blue, which also featured current head coach Gautam Gambhir as opening batter and sharing the XI with Virender Sehwag and Ashish Nehra. Delhi fell short by 50 runs chasing 275, with Kohli scoring 23 off 28 balls, striking five fours, in the final. Greenstone Lobo predicts Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma's ODI future That Challenger Trophy ended with Delhi losing the final to India Blue, captained by Yuvraj Singh, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar taking 4 for 39 to seal the Man of the Match award. Kohli was run out in the 10th over of the run chase. Kohli is now the only active player from that Delhi team. Both Kohli, now based in London, and Rohit have been on extended breaks since the IPL. While Kohli has posted videos of indoor net sessions, Rohit recently returned to Mumbai and is expected to resume training shortly. Whether they walk out in blue again after October could hinge on decisions made in the coming weeks.

Vengsarkar backs Gautam Gambhir in Oval curator spat, hits out at Hayden's remark

Former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar backed India head coach Gautam Gambhir for his spat with the Oval pitch curator during the fifth and final Test against England, also responding to comments made by Australia legend Matthew Hayden. The verbal spat took place when Gambhir, who was having a close look at the pitch along with the support staff, was stopped by the chief curator of the stadium, Lee Fortis, for getting too close to the surface two days before the Test would engage in a spat with Fortis, where he told him that he was just a 'groundsman.' The incident sparked debate, and Hayden suggested that Gambhir 'could have used better language' when speaking to the curator. Hayden felt the Indian coach should have toned down his response, even though he was entitled to check the pitch before the crucial match of the however, came to the defence of Gambhir and said that he has the right to see the pitch before the game. The Indian legend also said that the coaches and captains of teams touring India, and even their media, inspect the tracks before the match happens. 'As the head coach of the Indian team, Gambhir had every right to see the pitch from close quarters. When teams tour India, their entire squad, not just the captain and coach, examines the pitch minutely. Even their media inspects the pitch before the match. No one tells them anything. So, how are the rules different when we are playing in England?' Vengsarkar told Mumbai Mirror.'If this had happened to the Aussies, they would have used the choicest words'Vengsarkar took a dig at Hayden and said that Australia would have had 'some choice words' if they found themselves in a similar situation.'Would Hayden, or any of the Aussie cricketers, take it well if a curator had asked them to stay away from the square ahead of an important match? If this had happened to the Aussies, they would have used the choicest words to show the curator his place,' he off-field dispute had already seen India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and skipper Shubman Gill express frustration at the curator's actions. However, Fortis went from being a villain to a hero for the pitch he provided for the final Test as India won by six runs to level the series.- EndsMust Watch
