The Eagles Soar On The Billboard Charts Once More

Forbes05-05-2025

For months now, the Eagles have been performing a few concerts at a time at the hottest new venue in Las Vegas, the Sphere. The group is one of only a handful of acts to headline the massive and technologically impressive space, as the band continues its aptly named residency, Eagles: Live in Concert at the Sphere.
As that run of shows continues to grow, fans in the United States keep pressing play on the songs and albums that made the outfit so hugely successful — and worthy of a residency in the first place. This week, the Eagles return to multiple Billboard rankings with classics and longtime favorites.
The band mounts its momentary comeback with both an album and a song. Usually, with a legacy act, it's one or the other that performs well. There aren't many that can succeed with decades-old tunes and collections, but the Eagles are one of the few that can.
The group's sole hit at the moment is "Hotel California," which is widely regarded as not just the most successful tune by the Eagles, but perhaps the group's best as well. That track is a worldwide sensation once more as it returns to the Billboard Global 200. That tally, which was introduced about half a decade ago, ranks the most-consumed songs throughout the world using a methodology that blends sales and streaming activity.
This frame, the Eagles smash sits at No. 186 on the tally. It may currently rank fairly low on the 200-spot roster, but "Hotel California" has actually never cracked the upper half of the list in the 122 frames it has spent on the Billboard Global 200. The Eagles' classic has only flown as high as No. 132.
Streams and sales of "Hotel California" are helping fuel the Eagles' compilation Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975. Already one of the most successful collections of all time, the title appears on a trio of Billboard rankings this frame. It reenters the Top Rock Albums roster at No. 24, while also rising several spots on both the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart (No. 30) and the Billboard 200 (No. 139).
Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 has spent hundreds of weeks on each of those rankings, though the exact amount of time varies quite a bit from list to list. It's up to 259 frames on the Top Rock Albums chart and is nearing 500 on the Billboard 200.
While the project has peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 — the most competitive albums ranking in America — it only climbed as high as No. 8 on the genre-specific tallies. One might assume the opposite would be true, as competition isn't as tough on style-focused rosters, though those weren't introduced until long after the Eagles released the collection.
The Eagles are slated to finish the Las Vegas residency at the Sphere this coming November. The group began the run in September of last year and it has been marketed – rather intensely – as a farewell. Due to what must be incredible demand, multiple shows have been added several times. At some point, though, the band will finally have to end the show and walk away for good.

Songwriting has changed, says Barry Manilow

Barry Manilow thinks "songwriting has changed". The 81-year-old star released his eponymous debut album back in 1973, but he admits that songwriting has changed dramatically during the course of his career. Speaking to Billboard, he explained: "The songwriting has changed. "Young people don't write the way I was trained to write. There's no verse which goes into the chorus which goes back to the verse which goes to ending, and you change keys. They don't do that. "They start the song and then they just … it feels like a run-on sentence to me. I can't find the hook. I can't find the chorus. It just keeps on going, and then it ends." Manilow observed that a lot of his contemporaries have already retired from the music business. However, he has no intention of stepping back for the time being. The 'Could It Be Magic' hitmaker said: "It's like, 'What? Am I the only one left?' "It's Billy Joel, and Elton (John) is not well and Rod (Stewart) and Neil (Diamond). Diana Ross is still in great shape, I think. There must be only a handful of people in my world that are still there. "I'm still healthy. I'm strong and I've still got my voice and my energy. The night I can't hit the F natural on 'Even Now,' that's the night I throw in the towel. But I can still do it." Manilow has recently been working on a new album, which he hopes to release later this year. However, he admits that the creative process has been far from straightforward. The music icon explained: "This'll probably be my last album. "I've been working on it for a long time … for so long that the style of music has changed. "I had to go back and redo (the songs) so they sounded a little more contemporary. I had to take all the strings out, all the background vocals out 'cause they don't do that anymore. They don't use strings and background vocals and all that. "Even I heard that it sounded dated, so we had to go back and redo it."

DDG's Temporary Restraining Order Against Halle Bailey Denied

On Wednesday (June 4), DDG requested an emergency hearing in an attempt to block Halle Bailey from traveling internationally with their son, Halo. He countered her previous domestic violence accusations by filing for a restraining order of his own, but his request was not approved. Bailey is set to leave to Italy with their one-year-old this weekend for a few months as she shoots a film. TMZ reported yesterday the Michigan rapper filed a motion against his ex-girlfriend, claiming she poses an 'imminent emotional and psychological risk' to the child. He included several alleged incidents that would back up his assertions, if true. DDG wrote about a time Halle took his gun and ran out of his house, said she would have an abortion behind his back, and would text him concerning messages regarding her mental health. 'In or about August 2023, during a particularly volatile argument, petitioner became enraged and threatened to end her life using my legally owned firearm. Without my consent, she took the weapon and left the house,' wrote DDG in a declaration attached to his court filing, per Billboard. 'This incident was one of several in which petitioner's actions posed a serious threat to her own safety and the safety of our son by creating an environment of emotional distress and danger within the home.' The rapper also claimed Halle sent 'a series of alarming text messages threatening to kill herself and suggesting that their infant son, Halo, might also be harmed.' In May, Halle was granted a temporary restraining order against DDG after accusing him of abuse. She cited an incident where he allegedly smashed her head against a steering wheel during an argument, said he often referred to her as a 'b**ch' or 'evil,' and rallied his supporters to bad-mouth her publicly. The Little Mermaid actress addressed her Italy travel plans in her original complaint, which was approved on May 15. 'I have family and a nanny who will be traveling with me to care for Halo while I am working,' Halle wrote in the court documents. The former couple went public in March 2022 and had a child together in December 2023. See a full timeline of their relationship here.
