22 die due to heart-attack-related problems in 40 days in Karnataka's Hassan, panel to probe cause formed

Heart-attack related deaths have become a big source of worry in Karnataka's Hassan district, with the number of deaths surging to 22 in just 40 days. Five of the 22 dead were between 19 and 25 years old, while as many as eight were aged between 25 and 45. (Representational)
The age category of the majority of the victims has raised concerns even more, with most deaths occurring in young or middle-aged people. The surge has pointed the authorities to an emerging health crisis in the region.
Five of the 22 dead were between 19 and 25 years old, while as many as eight were aged between 25 and 45. Only a few of the people who have been reported dead due to heart-attack-related issues were aged above 60.
The cardiac problems disproportionately emerging in the younger population in the region have rattled both the medical community and the general public.
According to a report by the news agency ANI, four deaths were reported just on June 30. The victims on that day have been identified as Lepakshi, a 50-year-old homemaker from JP Nagar in Belur; Professor Muttayya, a 58-year-old English lecturer at the Government First Grade College in Holenarasipura; Kumar, a 57-year-old D-Group employee from Channarayapatna; and Satyanarayana Rao, a 63-year-old resident of Rangolihalli colony.
While Lepakshi collapsed after complaining of fatigue, Muttayya died of a sudden heart attack while having tea. Kumar passed away after being hospitalised with chest pain the previous day, and Rao succumbed after a sudden collapse.
What do the authorities say about the sudden rise of heart-attack-related deaths in Hassan?
Hassan deputy commissioner KS Lathakumari has formed a committee of six members, including the district health officer, the director of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, and cardiologists. The committee has been given a week to submit the report.
The decision to form the panel was taken on June 30 at a meeting chaired by Lathakumari with the officials of the department of health and family welfare and the department of medical education.
According to the director of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr Rajanna B, while the deaths are suspected to be cardiac-related, no definitive diagnosis has been made, except for two cases in the hospital.
"Most deaths occurred at home or while doing routine chores, only 2 of them occurred in the institution... None of these have undergone any postmortem, so it is difficult to tell the reason for death, because only 40% of the chest pain cases occur due to sudden cardiac arrest. A committee was formed yesterday after a meeting with deputy commissioner Lathakumari. We will do a survey on all these deaths and take technical data," Rajanna was quoted as saying by ANI.

Dhalwad's 4-Lane Flyover and Mehad's 2-lane tunnel now operational

Ramban (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], July 5 (ANI): The construction of the 500-metre four-lane viaduct (flyover) at Dhalwas and a two-lane 700-metre canopy tunnel at Mehad near Cafeteria Mod on the NH44 has helped in easier movement of vehicles for Amarnath Yatra pilgrims. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) Project Director Shubham Yadav stated that the construction of the flyover and canopy tunnel is a remarkable achievement by the NHAI, as these two spots had been a significant source of trouble on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH44) for passengers and commuters. 'The construction of both these projects is a big achievement for NHAI, as the two places were a big trouble on NH 44 for the passengers and commuters. Due to landslides and debris during rainfall, the traffic on NH 44 would be disrupted. A lot of people have also died on this highway due to the debris... Now, because of the timely construction of these two structures on these two most landslide-vulnerable spots on the NH44, the movement of the vehicles of Amarnath Yatra, tourists and fruit-laden heavy trucks besides routine local traffic has become hassle-free and smooth,' Yadav told ANI. Yadav gave credit for the achievement to the unflinching support of the Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways(MORT&H) Nitin Gadkari, Secretary (MORT&H) V Umashankar, NHAI Chairman Santosh Yadav, Regional Officer RS Yadav and former Project Director Purshottam Kumar. Earlier in Ramban on July 3, 17 medical camps were set up at langar sites along with mini hospitals. Ambulances were also deployed for the Amarnath Yatra. Ramban Chief Medical Officer Kamal Zadoo told ANI, 'On behalf of the health department, we have set up 17 camps at langar sites and lodgement centres across Ramban district from Nashri tunnel to Navyug tunnel. Mini hospitals have been established at Yatri Niwas Chanderkot and Lambhar Ground, featuring a four-bed indoor facility, a laboratory, and an ECG unit. We have also placed cardiac monitors there this year. Two ambulances have been deployed at Yatri Niwas Chanderkot, the Langar Site in Chanderkot, and Lambhar Ground. We have also kept back-up ambulances for any untoward incidents...' 'The National Highway Authority and the administration have provided four additional ambulances, which we have deployed for yatra duty'. (ANI)

Congress insulting scientists who developed indigenous COVID vaccines: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], July 4 (ANI): Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Friday accused the Congress party of 'insulting India's scientific achievements' by questioning the efficacy of indigenous COVID-19 vaccines, demanding an apology from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Joshi condemned Congress leaders for 'baselessly doubting the vaccines that saved crores of lives.' 'They oppose Modi politically but are now undermining the very scientists who protected India and the world during the pandemic,' Joshi said. 'This is an insult to our nation's achievements,' he added. Joshi challenged Siddaramaiah to clarify whether the state government links COVID-19 vaccines to recent heart attack cases. 'The CM must apologise to scientists and the public for this irresponsible narrative,' he said. Highlighting India's vaccine milestones, he noted: 'Congress ruled for 60 years but didn't develop a single indigenous vaccine. Under Modi, we produced 240 crore doses, vaccinated 120 crore Indians, and supplied vaccines to 150 countries.' Joshi also targeted the Siddaramaiah-led government over infighting, citing MLAs who allegedly exposed 'corruption and zero development.' 'An anti-Congress wave is brewing within their party,' he said, referencing MLAs B.R. Patil and Basavaraj Rayareddy's corruption allegations. Responding to Karnataka's demand for central aid, Joshi stated: 'We'll fund development, not corruption. Let them submit a proper plan.' (ANI)
