Activists stage protest demanding release of funds for super-speciality hospital in Karnataka's Hassan

Activists of various progressive organisations of Karnataka's Hassan on Friday staged a protest urging the State government to release funds required for the super-speciality hospital in the district to begin operations, the structure of which is ready and functional. The representatives of Left parties, Dalit Sangharsha Samiti, senior journalists, writers, and activists of different forums participated in the dharna held in front of the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences. The structure meant for the super-speciality hospital had already been constructed. However, it required essential equipment and staff to start its activities. The protesters said that hundreds of people from Hassan and neighbouring districts visit the hospital every day. Recently, there had been reports of sudden deaths in the district due to various reasons, and if the super speciality hospital were fully functional, the deaths could have been avoided, they added. H.R. Naveen Kumar, district president of Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha, said that the government should release ₹60 crore for the hospital to become operational. Otherwise, the structure would remain non-functional, he added. 'We have been demanding the improvement of health service systems in the district from the government, for the benefit of the poor,' Mr. Kumar said. Later in the day, Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, who is also the Minister in charge of the district, along with Lok Sabha member Shreyas M. Patel met the protesters and interacted with them regarding their demands. The Minister said that he was aware of the issue, and assured the protesters that he would discuss it with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and others concerned for the release of the funds. Writer Rupa Hassan, senior journalist R.P. Venkateshamurthy, CITU leader Dharmesh, Dalit activist H.K. Sandesh, and others were part of the protest.

Activists demand improvement of health facilities in Karnataka's Hassan, submit memorandum to Deputy Commissioner

Activists representing many progressive organisations in Hassan on Thursday met Deputy Commissioner K.S. Lathakumari and requested her to ensure that the super speciality hospital of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) is opened at the earliest. A delegation of activists, which included representatives of pro-Dalit, women, and farmers' organisations, demanded the upgradation of health services in the district in tune with the Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS). They submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner in this regard. The people of Hassan require good health services, as the number of sudden deaths due to heart-related diseases has increased in recent days, the activists said. Irrespective of age and gender, many died due to various health issues; however, many of them could have survived, had they been provided with timely health services, they added. 'The super speciality hospital being constructed on the campus of HIMS requires ₹60 crore for the procurement of necessary equipment and recruitment of staff. The government should release the amount required, and the number of primary health centres and community health centres should be increased as per the IPHS,' they said. The forum of progressive organisations has launched a public campaign for people's health called 'Janarogyakkagi Janandolana'. As part of the campaign, they would stage a dharna in front of the super speciality hospital constructed in the city on August 15. Writer and activist Rupa Hassan; activists Jayalakshmi Rajanna Gowda, Mamatha Shivu, and Bhanamathi; writer Suvarna Shivaprasad; Swamy Chinnenahalli, and others were present as part of the delegation.

Revanna holds meeting with HIMS, Health Dept. officers over sudden deaths in Hassan

Former Minister and Holenarasipur MLA H.D. Revanna, on Tuesday, held a meeting with officers of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences and the Department of Health and Family Welfare regarding the recent sudden deaths reported in Hassan district. Mr. Revanna told the officers that the people were in shock over a series of deaths due to heart-related ailments. Many private hospitals and clinics have been allegedly using this opportunity to make money by charging high fee for tests. The officers should ensure the government ambulances work throughout the day and do not take patients to private hospitals, he said. He pointed out that the district has a medical college and a super-speciality hospital as well. Given the facilities available, the patients need not go to private hospitals. He also instructed the officials to take action against the doctors who recommend patients to private hospitals. Speaking to press persons, the JD(S) MLA pointed out the absence of a Cath Lab system, an interventional imaging platform helpful to treat people with heart problems, at the HIMS. He said that the system had not been set up even after it was sanctioned and the institute had sufficient funds to procure it. He demanded that the HIMS should conduct Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Echocardiogram (Echo) tests, free of cost, utilising the user's fund of the institute. Citing addiction to alcohol as one of the reasons for heart attacks, Mr. Revanna suggested closing liquor shops by 8 p.m. in Hassan city. Legislators A. Manju, C.N. Balakrishna, H.P. Swaroop, HIMS director B. Rajanna, and DHO Anil Kumar, among others were present at the meeting.

HIMS students grapple with cadaver shortage

Haveri: The Haveri Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) is experiencing a critical shortage of cadavers for anatomy dissection, affecting both students and the administration. National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines stipulate one cadaver per 15 anatomy students. Due to non-compliance, HIMS got a Rs 15 lakh penalty last year and submitted documentation regarding cadaver arrangements. Officials have secured arrangements for 10 cadavers from Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, with delivery expected within a week. Despite six persons pledging body donations, the current availability remains insufficient for educational requirements. Sources indicate limited body donations due to social and religious factors. Despite ongoing awareness initiatives about the significance of body donations to medical institutions, public participation in these programmes remains notably low. "Some people are showing interest in donating bodies, but their relatives are expecting something from the institution in return. People do not know that the donation of a body is a social cause, but they have considerations after body donation. Some donors' successors are demanding money from us, but we refused to provide the same," stated a HIMS official. The authorities face limitations in utilising unclaimed bodies from police quarters for educational purposes, as these require postmortem. The Haveri district hospital's insufficient infrastructure, including the absence of cold storage and mortuary facilities, complicates the preservation of unclaimed bodies. Post-police investigation, these bodies often become unsuitable for academic purposes due to decomposition. "The anxiety and doubts about the fate of their bodies after donation are the main reasons for showing unwillingness among the non-medical professionals in society. Misconceptions about body donation are deeply rooted in the population in rural areas. While the urban population is aware of organ and body donations it is ignorant about the procedure and criteria for the same," stated Dr Pradeep Kumar MV, dean of HIMS. He added that they approached the department of medical education regarding the cadaver shortage, which suggested obtaining them from Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences due to their surplus. "Hassan Medical College authorities have allotted 10 bodies to our institute, and we will collect these bodies within a week. Our cadaver scarcity will be fulfilled this year," Dr Pradeep Kumar informed.

22 die due to heart-attack-related problems in 40 days in Karnataka's Hassan, panel to probe cause formed

Heart-attack related deaths have become a big source of worry in Karnataka's Hassan district, with the number of deaths surging to 22 in just 40 days. Five of the 22 dead were between 19 and 25 years old, while as many as eight were aged between 25 and 45. (Representational) The age category of the majority of the victims has raised concerns even more, with most deaths occurring in young or middle-aged people. The surge has pointed the authorities to an emerging health crisis in the region. Five of the 22 dead were between 19 and 25 years old, while as many as eight were aged between 25 and 45. Only a few of the people who have been reported dead due to heart-attack-related issues were aged above 60. The cardiac problems disproportionately emerging in the younger population in the region have rattled both the medical community and the general public. According to a report by the news agency ANI, four deaths were reported just on June 30. The victims on that day have been identified as Lepakshi, a 50-year-old homemaker from JP Nagar in Belur; Professor Muttayya, a 58-year-old English lecturer at the Government First Grade College in Holenarasipura; Kumar, a 57-year-old D-Group employee from Channarayapatna; and Satyanarayana Rao, a 63-year-old resident of Rangolihalli colony. While Lepakshi collapsed after complaining of fatigue, Muttayya died of a sudden heart attack while having tea. Kumar passed away after being hospitalised with chest pain the previous day, and Rao succumbed after a sudden collapse. What do the authorities say about the sudden rise of heart-attack-related deaths in Hassan? Hassan deputy commissioner KS Lathakumari has formed a committee of six members, including the district health officer, the director of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, and cardiologists. The committee has been given a week to submit the report. The decision to form the panel was taken on June 30 at a meeting chaired by Lathakumari with the officials of the department of health and family welfare and the department of medical education. According to the director of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr Rajanna B, while the deaths are suspected to be cardiac-related, no definitive diagnosis has been made, except for two cases in the hospital. "Most deaths occurred at home or while doing routine chores, only 2 of them occurred in the institution... None of these have undergone any postmortem, so it is difficult to tell the reason for death, because only 40% of the chest pain cases occur due to sudden cardiac arrest. A committee was formed yesterday after a meeting with deputy commissioner Lathakumari. We will do a survey on all these deaths and take technical data," Rajanna was quoted as saying by ANI.
