Avatar might get an animated spin-off, James Cameron teases
The 70-year-old director is currently finishing off the sci-fi franchise's next instalment Avatar: Fire and Ash, and Cameron has now revealed he pitched an animated spin-off series or film to Disney.
Speaking with Empire magazine, he explained: 'I said, 'Look, I want to do an animated anthology series that's essentially in the world, but stories that you wouldn't have expected from that world.
'There might even be an animated feature in there — it might be a feature for streaming, or a theatrical feature.'
The Terminator filmmaker added this Avatar project would be akin to that of The Animatrix - which was the animated anthology spin-off movie of The Matrix franchise.
He said: 'A good early example is The Animatrix, where they went afield in the Matrix world.
'These are all great examples for how we can add texture and baroque detail to the world of Avatar.'
Cameron hopes the animated Avatar series will deliver 'backstory on characters and tangential stuff that happened off-camera within the movies'.
He added: 'Who first landed on Pandora? The first expedition. You could go anywhere you want.'
Even so, the Titanic director admitted it was still early days for the project.
He said: 'We haven't done much with that yet.
'We're still gathering our stories and that sort of thing, and I've got to find the boutique filmmakers, the animators, that want to do it.'
Avatar: Fire and Ash will pick up after the events of 2022's The Way of Water, and follow Na'vi Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and their family as they face a fierce new threat from the fire‑wielding 'Ash People' tribe led by Varang (Oona Chaplin) - reigniting conflict on a turbulent Pandora.
As grief and old enemies resurface, alliances with the Metkayina clan will test their strength, faith, and survival.
Avatar: Fire and Ash - which is slated to hit screens on December 19, 2025 - will also see the return of Sigourney Weaver's Kiri and Kate Winslet's Ronal.
In the first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash - which was released ahead of The Fantastic Four: First Steps - audiences are plunged back into the fiery heart of Pandora.
The Na'vi face a chilling new threat in the form of the Ash People, also called the Mangkwan Clan, commanded by the formidable leader Varang (Chaplin).
Scenes hint at an internal Na'vi civil war, with echoes of betrayal and spiritual conflict as Varang declares to Kiri: 'Your goddess has no dominion here'.
The movie also sees the return of Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang) in a Na'vi body, raising the stakes further as alliances blur and old enemies resurface.
Meanwhile, Jake Sully's (Worthington) family, including Neytiri (Saldana) and their children, stand on the brink of war.
Stunning new visuals feature dramatic volcanic landscapes, flying creatures, and expansive aerial and aquatic combat sequences - all pointing to a darker, more elemental chapter in the saga.
Visually dazzling and emotionally charged, the trailer teases an epic scale of conflict and character evolution on Pandora.

He recalled: "They got him the craziest jet I've ever seen. [It] had a movie theatre in it. The guy who owned the jet was a serious smoker, and Johnny smokes cigarettes constantly... "He lights one off of the other one he just finished, kind of thing, all day. And they needed to get a plane for Johnny that he was allowed to smoke in ... "I remember walking up the stairs, and as I got four feet from the door of the plane ... cigarette smoke just hit me in the face. I walked onto the plane, and it was like yellow air from everyone just sitting in there smoking." Northern Territory cotton grower Simone Cameron excited to host events at Taste of the Kimberley
As we race towards the opening of Taste of the Kimberley, Northern Territory cotton grower Simone Cameron, who will run the Cotton Blooms and Tea Tales event has highlighted how the annual festival brings consumers and producers together. 'It's just such a wonderful event. Kununurra is really very good at putting on some fabulous community-led events and this one in particular, is something dear to my heart in that it's focusing on the agricultural and rural capacity of the valley, and beyond, which is really amazing,' she said. 'It's a five-star event as far as I'm concerned.' She said she was looking forward to educating festival goers on the some of the misconceptions of cotton growing. 'I'm looking forward to my wonderful Cotton Blooms and Tea Tales event and speaking to the stories of regional and rural, remote people that are invested in agriculture up here in the north,' Ms Cameron said. 'The cotton industry realised over 30 years ago that they weren't headed in the right direction, so they made the decisions back then to change it up and to actually lead the industry into what it is today — a globally recognised, environmentally friendly, sustainable industry that's now 60 years young. 'The Insight Bus Tours are also a lot of fun, getting to meet the different farmers from the valley and hear from them firsthand. 'It's really fantastic that the growers in the Ord Valley are open to opening their farms and homes. It's a really great opportunity for those that aren't involved in the industries of farming and agriculture production to get a first-hand, ground-truth look at a day in the life of a farmer. 'There's so many amazing people, so much skill, so much passion . . . it should be a wonderful showcase of all things cotton and agricultural pursuits.' With all the other tasting, education and community events on offer, Ms Cameron said the event shouldn't be missed. 'The FEASTival is amazing . . . just a gastronomic delight to walk around and to eat all of the different wonderful food,' she said. 'I think the whole event is great and it's such a beautiful backdrop under which it's all hosted. You can't get much better than the Eastern Kimberley. 'What I really like about WA is everyone puts a value on the circular economy . . . supporting the industries that are local which impacts directly on the community. 'I look forward to meeting with people and joining in the celebration of the region.' The Taste of the Kimberley runs from August 15 to 17.

Lindsay Lohan's sequel ‘mildly exhausting' Why sequel to Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis' cult movie Freaky Friday is ‘mildly exhausting'
With a belated Disney sequel, some quality homegrown horror and the return of a stone-cold comedy classic, it's a good week to head to the movies FREAKIER FRIDAY (PG) Director: Nisha Ganatra (Late Night) Starring: Lindsay Lohan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons *** As is the case every other month lately, it is back-to-the future time in the world of Disney. The latest dip into the famed studio's extensive catalogue of classic properties is Freakier Friday, a revival of a famous mother-daughter body-swap premise that first surfaced in the 1970s. The key reference point for this busy, fizzy sequel is the 2003 edition of Freaky Friday, in which Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan experienced an inter-family switcheroo in amusing and endearing style. The same coupling returns in pleasing enough fashion, with Curtis' Tess now a podcasting psychologist specialising in how to be a great grandmother. As for Lohan's Anna, these days she is a single mother who is still working in the music business like before, albeit as a producer instead of a performer. If you're assuming these two will be trading physical identities once again, you have got it all wrong. This time around, courtesy of a chance encounter with an incompetent psychic, Anna will be reversing roles with her rebellious teenage daughter Harper (Julia Butters). As for Tess, she is about to exchange bodies with another teenager, her step-granddaughter-to-be, Lily (Sophia Hammons). The presence of Lily in this complicated set-up requires a little explaining. Her father, a British chef named Eric (Manny Jacinto) is about to marry Anna after a whirlwind romance. Neither Lily nor Harper are looking forward to becoming part of a new family unit, as they are mortal enemies at high school. For such a simple movie, Freakier Friday has a lot of plotting for its audience to process, and not all of the storytelling enhances an increasingly convoluted experience. In fact, with two sets of body-swaps in play at any one time, most viewers will find themselves concentrating hard to keep track of who is who, and just as importantly, who isn't who. (Do the maths: one body-swap means two possible combinations of mother-daughter mayhem, while two body-swaps blows the total number of combos out to twelve!) Occasionally, this means Freakier Friday can present as mildly exhausting, when it really should be effortlessly entertaining. The saving graces, of course, are Curtis and Lohan, who both have serious skills when it comes to finding the funny in not having to act their age. Their younger co-stars Butters and Hammons also rise admirably to the challenges posed to them as performers, even though their brash, bratty characters prove difficult to warm to. Freakier Friday is in cinemas now. TOGETHER (MA15+) *** General release That time-honoured metaphor about couples sticking together no matter what gets put to a staggeringly literal test in Together. Most unsuspecting viewers won't see what's really in store for them here. And once they do gather what Together is really up to, there's no way they will ever truly unsee what happens next. Initially at least, the movie presents an authentic and amusing portrait of a long-term couple who have hit that point where both commitment and contentment are two very big issues. Millie and Tim (played by real-life partners Alison Brie and Dave Franco) still want each other, but are giving clear signals they may want different things from their relationship. All of this and more comes to a dramatic head one fateful night, where Millie and Tim must take sudden refuge from a torrential rainstorm. For reasons best not mentioned here, the pair's problems are manifested in a body-altering (or is that body-merging?) form that is increasingly confronting to witness. If you were tough enough to make it through The Substance, then you should be able to cope with the high-concept horrors Together intends to unleash. Just don't say you weren't warned. THIS IS SPINAL TAP (M) Selected cinemas Now rightly recognised as one of the great movie comedies of all time, this gut-bustingly funny rockumentary makes a welcome return to the big screen ahead of a much-anticipated sequel dropping next month. For those arriving late to the party, Spinal Tap is an ailing metal band who just won't call it a day, despite the ever-increasing selectivity of its appeal. Filmmaker Marty DiBergi (Rob Reiner) tracks brain-addled Brits David St Hubbins (Michael McKean), Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) and their eclectic entourage as they try to complete the concert tour that will cement their position at the bottom of the charts. The layering of the jokes is dense, the behaviour captured on camera even denser, and the satire of heavy metal's heaviest excesses is on-the-money from beginning to end. Throw in an unexplained series of dead drummers, a microscopic stage re-creation of the Stonehenge monument, and a songbook pushing lyrics and melodies to their absolute limits, and the perfection is complete.
