Bindi Irwin 'on road to recovery' after having appendix and 14 endometriosis lesions removed

Perth Now13-05-2025
Bindi Irwin is "on the road to recovery" after having her appendix and 14 endometriosis lesions removed during emergency surgery.
The 26-year-old conservationist was rushed to New York's Lenox Hill Hospital last weekend after her appendix ruptured, forcing her to miss the annual Steve Irwin Gala in Las Vegas - which is held in honour of her late dad, crocodile hunter Steve Irwin - and Bindi has told fans how "lucky" she is after going under the knife.
Speaking in an Instagram video from her hospital bed, she said: "I had my appendix removed.
"I also had 14 new endometriosis lesions that had to be removed, and they kindly stitched up my hernia as well.
"I am forever grateful to Dr. Seckin and the entire team at Lenox Hill Hospital.
"Thank you, guys, for your kind words and your support.
"I'm sorry if I'm a little out of it in this video, but I just wanted you to know that I am on the road to recovery, one step at a time.
"I am so lucky to have so much love in my life from my beautiful family.
"Sending love and light your way and we'll get through this."
Bindi admitted her surgery was a "success", and she thanked fans for their "kind messages" amid her recovery.
She captioned the post: "I am so thankful that I got the help I needed with Dr. Seckin and Dr. Chu at Lenox Hill Hospital. After many months of a grumbly appendix, I finally had to seek help the day of our Steve Irwin Gala. After consulting with Dr. Seckin, we agreed that if I flew to New York, he could also check for endometriosis again. Surgery was a success. My appendix was removed, along with another 14 lesions (after having 37 endometriosis lesions and a cyst removed two years ago). I also had a repair to a large hernia I acquired through childbirth four years ago. Thankfully, I am on the road to recovery. I appreciate all the kind messages I've received, and the support for our Gala in Las Vegas. (sic)"
Bindi also heaped praise on her brother, Robert Irwin, for doing an "incredible job" hosting the Steve Irwin Gala, and she is hoping to attend the next event, in Brisbane in November.
She added: "Credit to Robert for hosting the evening, he did such an incredible job raising funds and awareness for Wildlife Warriors. And thanks to my family for always being there for me. I have so much love for dear Chandler + sweet Grace. Thank you to Mum for being there with me every step of the way. And rest assured, I'll see you at the next Steve Irwin Gala in Brisbane this November. One day at a time. Time to heal now. Sending my love to you all. (sic)"

Glitter and gasps: Burlesque fest to stun Perth in October

While most people's understandings of burlesque may be limited to the smash 2010 movie musical starring Christina Aguilera, one group of superstars are glitzing up ready to show Perth exactly what the art form consists of. The Perth International Burlesque Festival is set to return in October, bringing together some of Australia's best showgirls and showboys for world-class performances filled with sparkle and sass. The festival, which is entering its 12th year, will commence its three-weekend run on October 3 with a cheeky sneak peek into burlesque at the Charity Teaser peep show! Not only will the teaser give an insight into how the retro form of entertainment works, it also supports a great cause — with the proceeds being donated to charity Black Rainbow, which supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who identify as LGBTQ+. The glitz of the burlesque festival won't be restricted to just the metropolitan area, however — the show will be taken on the road a la Priscilla Queen of the Desert when the showgirls stop in Geraldton for a dazzling one-night-only performance on October 11. Adealide burlesque performer Ember Rose will also take the stage at the festival's Tease Factory show. For the first time ever, the Tease Factory show will offer reserved seating so guests can enjoy the glitz and glam with a guaranteed spot. The final weekend of the festival begins with the biggest event of the line-up, the Club Burlesque Gala! The Gala is set to take place on October 18 — with gowns, glitter, and gasp-worthy talent blending together to create the ultimate night of burlesque glamour for showgoers. Event organiser Tease Industries said the festival gives the wider community an opportunity to spotlight Perth's incredible burlesque talent. '(The festival) is more than entertainment – it's a movement of artistry, diversity, and connection,' they said. 'We create spaces where stories are told through glitter, tease, and unapologetic self-expression.' More information on the upcoming festival can be found on the event website.

'I didn't get a call': Jonathan LaPaglia reveals the blunt way he was dumped as Survivor Australia's host by Network 10 after nearly a decade on air

Jonathan LaPaglia has finally opened up about his shock axing from Australian Survivor. The 55-year-old television host has claimed that despite years at the helm of one of Network 10's biggest shows, he was not even given the courtesy of a phone call. "The speculation online was that I received an email. But no, it was a call to my manager in Australia," LaPaglia told The Watchlist on Sunday. "I didn't get a direct call, which, I'll be honest with you, was disappointing. "After 10 years of helming their flagship show, it would have been nice to get a direct call from the people at the top, but I didn't." Fans were stunned back in June when the Adelaide-born star confirmed his departure in a fiery Instagram post. "Australian Survivor has seen some of the most epic blindsides over the last 10 years, but this one might just be the craziest of them all… because it happened to me," he captioned a clip of himself being hit by a giant boxing glove. LaPaglia signed off with a stinging punchline: "(Ps. Whoever said a blindside is the most humane way to put someone down is an idiot. It hurts like a b****!) #SurvivorAU." Reflecting on the post, the father of one acknowledged that his honesty was likely the reason he was let go. "I'm sure the network wasn't happy, but I've always been honest with the audience, and I think that's part of what they appreciate about me," he said. "Honestly, that's who I am. And maybe that's why I'm in this position, because I am a little too honest about stuff, and maybe I'm not very good at playing the game." Despite the blow, LaPaglia said he is happy to be back on screens in what will be his swansong season, Survivor: Australia v The World, which premiered on Sunday night. The blockbuster edition sees homegrown favourites George Mladenov and Shonee Bowtell battle international legends Cirie Fields, Tony Vlachos and Parvati Shallow in a high-stakes contest filmed in Samoa. Also in the mix is Perth model David Genat, the All Stars winner tipped to succeed LaPaglia as host. Genat has already carved out an impressive reality TV resume, having claimed the $500,000 Survivor prize in 2020 before pocketing a staggering $US5.8 million (about $AU9.2 million) in March on NBC's Deal or No Deal Island. LaPaglia conceded it is fitting that his final outing coincides with such a monumental season. "If you're going to be dispatched as host of Australian Survivor, this is the one season that it should happen, right?" he joked. "This is the one season that all the fans have been screaming for years (to see). And I've always thought it was a great idea to do it." Still, he wishes he had been told "prior to filming" that it would be his last. "I didn't actually get to say goodbye to Australian Survivor; Australian Survivor said goodbye to me," he laughed. But with no hidden immunity idol to save him this time, the longtime host admits he may now follow in the footsteps of his older brother, 66-year-old actor Anthony LaPaglia. For now, though, he's still waiting on his next gig. "I haven't received any calls yet," he said. "I'm just busy refreshing the LinkedIn profile."
