Rays' Wander Franco charged for illegal gun possession amid sexual abuse trial
The post Rays' Wander Franco charged for illegal gun possession amid sexual abuse trial appeared first on ClutchPoints. Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco, who was placed on administrative leave in August of 2023 before being moved to the restricted list last July, is now officially facing another legal case. He is currently standing trial in his native Dominican Republic for the alleged sexual abuse of a minor, sexual exploitation against a minor and human trafficking. If convicted, Franco could serve up to 30 years in prison. Prosecutors are also charging him for a separate arrest that took place in November. As of Sunday, the former All-Star is accused of illegal possession of a handgun, via ESPN. The alleged crime is said to have taken place in a parking lot altercation in San Juan de la Maguana. Police found the firearm, which is registered in the name of Franco's uncle, in the 24-year-old's vehicle and arrested him. His attorneys claim that there is no legal issue since the gun is licensed. He could find himself back in court at a future date. Franco is already facing extremely serious charges as we speak. Prosecutors state that he 'kidnapped' a then-14-year-old girl for 'sexual purposes' and paid the minor's mother thousands of dollars in order to gain her consent. They claimed to have conclusive evidence against the athlete before his trial started on June 2. The Rays signed Wander Franco to an 11-year, $182 million deal in 2021, which remains the biggest contract they have ever committed to a player. Obviously, they considered him to be a transformative talent who could lead the franchise through the 2020s. Because he is on the restricted list, Tampa Bay is not presently on the hook for its investment. Prosecutors intend to take Franco to trial for his gun charge. His current trial continues in Puerto Plata. He maintains his innocence and called for justice before the proceedings began. Apparently, there is a possibility the public has to wait approximately eight months for a verdict. FOX Sports reported on Wednesday that star attacker Christian Pulisic would skip this summer's tournament following two grueling seasons with Italian club A.C. Milan. Weston McKennie and Tim Weah are unavailable because Juventus is participating in the FIFA Club World Cup instead, as is Gio Reyna's Borussia Pulisic's absence, U.S. Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker said in a statement:"Christian and his team approached the Federation and the coaching staff about the possibility of stepping back this summer, given the amount of matches he has played in the past two years at both the club and international level with very little break. "After thoughtful discussions and careful consideration, we made the collective decision that this is the right moment for him to get the rest he needs. The objective is to ensure he's fully prepared to perform at the highest level next season." "The principal objective is the World Cup," Pochettino told reporters via Zoom shortly after Thursday's announcement. "We decided the best [thing] for him and for the national team is the decision that we make." Joe Scally, Josh Sargent and Tanner Tessmann, who all started the Nations League semifinal loss to Panama, were also left off the squad, which will be trimmed to 26 on June 4, when the final list must be submitted to Concacaf. Darwin Nunez open to Al-Hilal move
Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is reportedly open to a high-profile transfer to Al‑Hilal, according to Foot Mercato. The Saudi Pro League outfit have made initial contact with Nunez's representatives, although no offer has been tabled yet. Advertisement Nunez, who joined Liverpool from Benfica in 2022, has endured an inconsistent spell in the Premier League, struggling to fully adapt to the demands of English football. Although the 25-year-old has shown flashes of brilliance in a Liverpool shirt, his finishing and decision-making have come under scrutiny. Nunez has fallen down the pecking order under new Liverpool manager Arne Slot, starting just eight league matches and scoring five goals in the 2024/25 season. Unsurprisingly, the Uruguayan has been linked with a move away from Anfield this summer, with Atletico Madrid believed to be keen on snapping him up. Advertisement However, Los Colchoneros may now have to look elsewhere in their search for offensive reinforcement as Nunez warms up to the idea of moving to the Middle East. Following their failed pursuit of Victor Osimhen, Al-Hilal are moving fast on to other targets as they look to get in some new faces in time for the upcoming Club World Cup. A switch to Al-Hilal would offer Nunez a more lucrative contract as well as the opportunity to rediscover the devastating touch in front of goal that convinced Liverpool to break their transfer record for him. Nunez's potential departure would free up more funds for new signings as Liverpool close in on a mammoth deal to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. The Reds are also reportedly eyeing a deal for Eintracht Frankfurt hitman Hugo Ekitike and could spend as much as €300 million this summer.
