Kirby Smart fires back at Paul Finebaum over Gunner Stockton comments
SEC college football expert Paul Finebaum has expressed significant concern about Gunner Stockton being Georgia's starting quarterback for the upcoming college football season.
"I'd say that's a big not fine.", said Finebaum about Gunner Stockton serving as Georgia's starting quarterback during a "Fine/Not Fine" segment on ESPN's SportsCenter. "I know the team coalesced around him after the SEC championship game, but I was underwhelmed by what I saw from Gunner Stockton in the Sugar Bowl loss to Notre Dame."

In the Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame, Stockton, making his first career start, completed 20 of 32 passes for 234 yards and one touchdown. Georgia lost the game 23-10, struggling on offense with two fumbles and failing to convert any of their three fourth-down attempts.
Kirby Smart later joined addressed Finebaum's show and discussed his comments directly.
"I didn't miss it," said Smart when asked about Finebaum's comments. "Yeah, I'm excited. Gunner (Stockton) got the message, man." Smart implies that Finebaum's comments will serve as motivation for Stockton, who is projected to be Georgia's starting quarterback in 2025. While Smart has not officially named Stockton the starter, all signs point to him taking the role, especially given his experience in the system compared to other UGA quarterbacks like Ryan Puglisi.
"I feel like at this point in your career, you need a little bit of help from me," said Finebaum. "To get you to the first game and over the finish line."
Smart's comments with Paul Finebaum
"I am glad you did!" said Smart. "That's why I always come on your show because I love the fact that you give me all that motivation."

The FPI ratings are ESPN's best model for predicting a team's record, its chances of winning its conference and reaching the 12-team College Football Playoff and national championship game. FPI also tracks teams' strength of schedule, plus individual ratings for offense, defense and special teams. Alabama landed at No. 3 in ESPN's first FPI with a 24.2 overall rating. In national championship odds based on FPI, the Texas Longhorns, Georgia Bulldogs and Ohio State Buckeyes were the only teams ahead of the Crimson Tide. Here's a breakdown of where Alabama landed in the FPI. ESPN FPI projections for Alabama football Projected wins: 9.6 Chances of reaching CFP: 66.2 percent (4th) Chances of winning SEC: 17.2 percent (3rd) Chances of reaching national championship game: 20.2 percent (4th) Chances of winning national championship: 10.4 percent (4th) Offensive rating: 11.8 (3rd) Defense rating: 11.3 (3rd) Strength of schedule ranking: 10th Alabama will again have one of the toughest schedules in the nation in 2025, with road trips to Georgia in Athens on Sept. 27 and its regular season finale at Auburn (Nov. 29). The Crimson Tide will face LSU and Tennessee in Tuscaloosa and will open the season in Tallahassee against Florida State on Aug. 30. What is ESPN FPI? ESPN explains FPI this way: "Just to refresh our memories, the FPI is a predictive rating system that estimates each FBS team's strength (in points per game relative to the national average) on offense, defense and special teams, making adjustments for starters lost, recruiting talent and other personnel changes. Those numbers are then plugged into the schedule, and everything is simulated 20,000 times to track each team's odds of winning its conference, making the playoff and advancing through to the national title." Notre Dame baseball loses more catcher depth as another, Joey Spence, enters the portal
Notre Dame baseball loses more catcher depth as another, Joey Spence, enters the portal On Monday, Notre Dame baseball got its worst news of the off-season, as star catcher Carson Tinney entered the transfer portal. Then on early Tuesday morning, the backstop depth took another hit, as fifth-year senior Joey Spence also announced his intentions to leave the Irish program. This should come as no surprise, as he moved away from the program at the end of February, most likely due to his playing time decreasing with Tinney's rise. Spence, who also got playing time as the designated hitter, was drafted out of high school, getting selected by the Arizona Diamondback in round No. 18. The hope was that he would return next fall, but will now leave with a year of eligibility remaining. Spence's collegiate career hasn't gone exactly how he planned, ending his Irish career with 59 games played, 105 at-bats with a .276 average, 6 home runs and 15 RBI. While Notre Dame still has a promising future, the transfer season has not been kind for the Irish as multiple others have opted to leave the program.
