Phelps calls USA Swimming leadership weak, demands systemic overhaul

The Hindua day ago
Michael Phelps has launched a scathing attack on USA Swimming's leadership, with the 23-time Olympic gold medallist branding the body weak and demanding sweeping reforms after what he sees as years of organisational decline.
The 40-year-old American, the most decorated Olympian of all time with 28 medals, revealed he might not want his four young sons competing in the sport given the current state of swimming in the United States.
Phelps traced his frustrations back through his competitive career, saying he often felt that his voice went unheard, that he was 'told to be grateful for the chance to compete,' and that it was more important to stay quiet and to keep the peace.
'First, I must be clear that I have the utmost respect for the U.S. swimmers that competed at the World Championships,' Phelps, who retired in 2016, wrote in a lengthy Instagram statement.
'My criticism is in no way directed at them—I know how hard they work and how honoured they are to represent the U.S. National Team. My criticism is about the system, its leadership, and how it's failing.
'There have always been cracks in the system but in the last nine years, I've seen those cracks grow.'
Reuters has contacted USA Swimming for comment.

Phelps compared the success of the U.S. swim team at the Rio Olympics in 2016, where it won 33 medals, to the Paris Games last year when it slumped to its lowest medal haul in the pool (28) since the 2004 Games in Athens.
'Poor leadership'
Phelps also revealed that he sent a letter to USA Swimming earlier this year addressing his 'frustrations with the current state of the sport,' which was shared with the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee, outlining his concerns.
He said he had the support of former Olympic medallists, world record holders, coaches and current and former staff members but added that the letter 'seemed to fall on deaf ears'.
'I've asked myself what's changed in our sport, and the answer is clear... this isn't on the athletes, as they continue to do the best they can with what they've been given. This is on the leadership of USA Swimming,' he added.

'Poor leadership trickles down and can impact an organisation at every level.
'Money is a factor. But poor operational controls and weak leadership are a cornerstone of the sport's problems.'
Phelps proposed a series of reforms, including an independent review of USA Swimming's Board of Directors and its organisation, improving athlete services and strengthening grassroots efforts to reverse membership decline and foster growth.
'I offer up my service to be a resource in these proposed initial steps and I am hopeful that the USA Swimming community will accept my offer,' he added.
Lochte criticism
Earlier this month, Phelps, along with six-time Olympic champion Ryan Lochte, made their disappointment clear after the U.S. team's performance at the World Championships in Singapore.
Lochte shared an image on social media of a tombstone with the inscription: 'In loving memory of United States Swimming. They set the bar high -- until they stopped reaching for it.'

Lochte added a caption referencing the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, saying: 'Call it a funeral or call it a fresh start. We've got 3 years.'
Phelps shared Lochte's post and added: 'Is this the wake-up call USA swimming needed?'
Despite early struggles in Singapore, the U.S. finished top of the medals table with nine gold medals and 29 medals overall.

Neeraj Chopra's wife Himani Mor said no to ₹1.5 crore in US

Himani Mor, wife of two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra, had once turned down a lucrative job offer abroad to pursue a career in sports business. Talking to Dainik Bhaskar, her father, Chand Mor, revealed that Himani, who stepped away from professional tennis, is now focused on building her own venture. 'She also turned down a ₹ 1.5 crore sports-related job offer in the USA and instead will focus on her own business now,' he said. Himani holds a qualification in Sports and Fitness Management from Franklin Pierce University in the United States. She is currently in Europe with Neeraj, who is undergoing an intense training block ahead of a packed competition calendar. The couple tied the knot earlier this year in a private ceremony at a resort in Solan, Himachal Pradesh. According to NDTV, Himani completed her bachelor's degree in Political Science and Physical Education from Delhi University's Miranda House. The report added that she has a brother, Himanshu, who is also a tennis player. Himani recently completed her Master's in Science in Sports Management and Administration from the McCormack Isenberg School of Management in Amherst, Massachusetts. Sports Star reported that Himani worked as a part-time Volunteer Assistant tennis coach at Franklin Pierce University. She is also a graduate assistant at Amherst College and manages the college's women's tennis team. According to the All India Tennis Association (AITA) website, Himani's carrer best national ranking was 42 in singles and 27 in doubles in 2018. She started playing in 2018 only in AITA events. Neeraj Chopra recently withdrew from the upcoming Silesia Diamond League in Poland, which had been billed as a marquee clash between him and Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem. Both names were absent from the final entry list, leaving fans curious. However, his absence is injury-related. The 27-year-old had a right calf interventional procedure at the Spire Hospital in Cambridge under Dr Ali Bajwa. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation in London.

Sehwag wanted to retire from ODIs after Dhoni's big call, but Tendulkar changed his mind: ‘You are emotional'

Virender Sehwag would not have been part of the 2011 World Cup-winning team if Sachin Tendulkar hadn't changed his mind after former India captain MS Dhoni dropped him in 2008. Virender Sehwag had made up his mind to retire from ODIs after MS Dhoni dropped him in 2008. Image: Reuters Virender Sehwag was one of the architects of India's 2011 ODI World Cup victory, but it would not have been possible without an intervention by the great Sachin Tendulkar in 2008, after the former opener was dropped from the team by then captain MS Dhoni. 14 years after India's World Cup win at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium under Dhoni's captaincy, Sehwag has revealed that he had made up his mind to retire from ODIs in 2008 after being dropped from the side during a tournament in Australia. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD When Tendulkar stopped Sehwag from retiring in ODIs Sehwag wasn't in great form as Dhoni decided to replace him at the top with Robin Uthappa. India later went on to win the tri-series that also included Australia and Sri Lanka. Sehwag has revealed that he had decided to retire from ODIs as he was not a part of the playing XI, but Tendulkar convinced him not to make any decision in a hurry, and to play a few more series before taking the final call. 'In the 2007-08 series against Australia, I played the first three matches and then MS Dhoni dropped me from the side. I wasn't picked for a while after that. Then I felt that if I can't be a part of the playing XI, then there is no point in playing ODI cricket,' Sehwag said on Padamjeet Sehrawat's podcast. 'I went to Tendulkar and said, 'I am thinking of retiring from ODIs'. He said, 'No. I went through a similar phase in 1999-2000, where I felt I should leave cricket. But that phase came and went. You are going through a trough, but it will pass. Don't make any decision when you are emotional. Give yourself some time and 1-2 series, and then take a call,'' Sehwag added. It proved to be fantastic advice as Sehwag continued in the Indian team as its star opener and helped them win the 2011 World Cup. In the World Cup, Sehwag scored 380 runs at 47.50 average.
