More Prime Day laptop deals:
Should you shop laptop deals right now or wait until Prime Day?
We recommend getting your order in sooner rather than later. While there's a slight chance that prices may dip a little lower later in the sale, the likelihood is that the best bargains will sell out fairly early. If you see a laptop that fits your needs and budget for several hundred dollars off, we'd recommend grabbing it before it goes out of stock.
Does Amazon Prime Day offer the best laptop deals?
As you might expect, major retailers will be offering excellent deals to counter the discounts on Amazon. You'll also see sales at smaller, online-only retailers like Adorama and B&H Photo offer deals that often go under the radar. So, while Amazon Prime Day should be your main focus, we also recommend checking out our coverage of discounts at Walmart and Best Buy to find the perfect deal for you. Lastly, also keep tabs on brand websites because HP and Acer are offering some direct deals of their own.
What else is on sale during Amazon Prime Day?
There is a huge variety of deals that you can shop for during Amazon Prime Day. These include tons of top tech like TVs and laptops, as well as tons of home goods and big-ticket items like mattresses and major appliances. There are also plenty of seasonal deals on things like grills, outdoor gear and other summer essentials. To give you a good idea of what's out there, you can check out our full roundup of all the best Amazon Prime Day deals.
How we choose the best Amazon Prime Day laptop deals
Many of us at CNET have covered shopping events for more than five years, including Black Friday, Prime Day, Memorial Day and countless others. We've become good at weeding out scams and superficial deals, so you'll see only the best offers on our lists.
When choosing laptop deals, we look for real discounts, quality reviews and remaining sale time. Our team of experts has tested hundreds of laptops to ensure we're bringing you the best options at the best prices.
Real discounts mean exactly that. We look at the price history for that product to make sure no brands are inflating prices to make the discount seem more substantial than it is.
Quality reviews and testing are important for any product, including laptops. If you're unhappy the first time you turn it on, the discount wasn't worthwhile.
Remaining sale time is a huge part of our vetting process. If a deal seems like it will only be around for a short while or will only be available for the remaining stock, we'll let you know up front so you don't come back to the deal later only to be disappointed.

Kennedy Jr. and the movement he calls 'Make America Healthy Again.' HILARY SWIFT/NYT Less than three months after he declared war on synthetic food dyes, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has already secured the cooperation of the makers of some of America's most colorful culinary products. If they fulfill their promises, Jell-O snacks, Kool-Aid beverages, and Lucky Charms cereals, among a host of other foods, will be rid of synthetic dyes by the end of 2027. But the candy industry and its most colorful chocolate treat, M&M's, are a big obstacle standing between Kennedy and the ability to claim total victory. Other than Froot Loops cereal, perhaps no food carries as much symbolism as M&M's for Kennedy and the movement he calls 'Make America Healthy Again.' Upon taking the reins at the Department of Health and Human Services, he made synthetic dyes the first target in his plan to rid the nation of ultra-processed foods. When Kennedy announced in April that he had an 'understanding' with food makers to remove petroleum-based dyes by the end of 2026, citing research showing they were linked to behavioral problems in children, critics scoffed at his voluntary approach. Yet his peer-pressure campaign appears to have produced some results. Last month, Nestle and ConAgra joined Kraft Heinz, General Mills, and PepsiCo in signing on to the secretary's plan. Candy manufacturers, which lean on artificial colorings for the bright treats they market to children, are still holding out. — NEW YORK TIMES Advertisement TECH Apple appeals 'unprecedented' $580 million EU App Store fine A woman carrying a smartphone walked past an Apple Store on April 23 in Berlin, Germany. Sean Gallup/Getty Apple Inc. appealed a $580 million fine from the European Union, calling the penalty 'unprecedented' and the regulator's required changes to its App Store as 'unlawful.' The European Commission announced the fine in April under its Digital Markets Act, saying that the iPhone maker ran afoul of rules related to allowing developers to steer users to make purchases outside of its store. In June, Apple changed its EU App Store policies to meet local requirements and avoid additional penalties. As part of the App Store changes in June, the company introduced a tiered commission structure of either 5 percent or 13 percent — on top of a 2 percent user acquisition fee — depending on if they want their app to show up in App Store search suggestions, promotional material, or have the ability to receive automatic updates. Apple said that regulators demanded the new tiered approach in the EU, which it maintains is more confusing for both users and developers. It also said no other app download store is subject to such a structure. Apple also now more freely allows developers to promote out-of-app payment processing for digital goods, skirting some of its fees. The iPhone maker also said the Commission unlawfully expanded the definition of steering, meaning that developers can point users to make transactions elsewhere in more cases. — BLOOMBERG NEWS Advertisement INTERNATIONAL Greece imposes work breaks as a heat wave grips the country Tourists with umbrellas waited outside the Acropolis of Athens on July 7. Petros Giannakouris/Associated Press Authorities in Greece imposed mandatory work breaks on Monday in parts of the country where temperatures were expected to exceed 104 Fahrenheit, with the heat wave forecast to last through Thursday. The labor ministry ordered the work stoppage, in effect from midday to 5 p.m., for outdoor manual labor and food delivery services, primarily in central Greece and on several islands. Employers were also asked to offer remote work options. No emergency measures were implemented in Athens, and the current hot spell — following sweltering temperatures across Europe — is not considered unusual. Greek authorities say they are taking long-term steps to address the effects of climate change, including the deployment this summer of a record number of firefighters. — ASSOCIATED PRESS Advertisement AUTO Ram pickup recalls investigated after seven injuries reported US auto safety regulators are investigating whether earlier recalls of more than a million Ram pickups did enough to address a flaw that could lead to trucks rolling away unexpectedly. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received 20 reports indicating previous recall fixes failed to address the problem, including six incidents that injured seven people and 12 involving a crash or fire, according to an agency notice. The defect at issue could allow the vehicles' transmission to be shifted out of park without having a foot on the brake pedal or a key in the ignition. NHTSA's so-called recall query covers nearly 1.2 million pickups made by Ram — now part of Stellantis NV — from the 2013 through 2018 model years. The vehicles were recalled over the issue in 2017 and 2018. NHTSA said it is working to understand why the additional roll-away incidents occurred and identify any other possible root cause of the issue. — BLOOMBERG NEWS DEALS CoreWeave to buy Core Scientific in $9 billion stock deal CoreWeave Inc. signage in Times Square in New York on May 9. Yuki Iwamura/Bloomberg CoreWeave Inc. is dropping $9 billion on the data-center operator Core Scientific Inc. in an effort to gain more direct control over the physical assets powering the artificial intelligence boom. In buying Core Scientific in an all-stock deal, CoreWeave will inherit more than a gigawatt of data-center capacity across the United States — much of which is already contracted out to serve its clients in training, deploying, and using AI models. CoreWeave said Monday that controlling more of its supply chain will eliminate lease expenses, reduce costs including those associated with financing projects, and 'future-proof' its revenue growth. Cloud infrastructure providers are rushing to construct data centers at an unprecedented scale to meet demand from AI-related work, fueling a wave of deals and partnerships across the industry. Just last week, Bloomberg reported that Oracle Corp. and OpenAI struck an agreement for 4.5 gigawatts worth of data-center capacity. CoreWeave has seen its stock price soar by nearly 300 percent since publicly listing in March, riding the broader enthusiasm for all things AI and capitalizing on marquee partnerships with giants such as Nvidia Corp. — BLOOMBERG NEWS Advertisement

ByteDance lays off 65 Seattle-area workers

(GeekWire File Photo / Todd Bishop) ByteDance, the Beijing-based parent company of TikTok, is laying off 65 workers based in Bellevue, Wash., according to a new filing with the Washington state Employment Security Department. ByteDance, Inc., is laying off 27 workers, while TikTok, Inc., is laying off 38 employees, according to the filing. The Chinese tech giant landed in the Seattle region in 2021 and has been growing its footprint in Amazon's backyard as it bolstered its TikTok Shop online shopping business. But TikTok has recently cut workers from its U.S. e-commerce unit across three rounds of layoffs since April, Bloomberg reported last week, noting that TikTok has replaced some staff near Seattle with managers connected to China. 'As the TikTok Shop business evolves, we regularly review our operations to ensure long-term success,' a spokesperson with TikTok said in a statement to GeekWire. 'Following careful consideration, we've made the difficult decision to adjust parts of our team to better align with strategic priorities.' TikTok Shop is TikTok's fastest-growing business, according to Bloomberg, though it has fallen short of recent internal sales targets. TikTok is planning to roll out a new version of its app for users in the U.S. ahead of a planned sale of TikTok's U.S. operations, The Information reported on Sunday. ByteDance is one of more than 100 out-of-town tech companies that have engineering centers in the Seattle region, as tracked by GeekWire.
