Historic Cumbrian pub changes hands as owners seek retirement
A historic Cumbrian pub has been sold for £375,000. The Shepherds Inn, built in 1789 and located in the village of Melmerby, was sold by Christie & Co. It had been owned for the past seven years by the Haddow family, and operated by Mike and Margaret Haddow, a husband-and-wife team who are now seeking retirement after more than 50 years in the hospitality industry. Mr Haddow said: "Having started working in a pub at the age of 15, we bought The Shepherds Inn in 2018 to complete a full circle in my career, going from pot washer to group executive chef to the pub I operated with my wife Margaret. "After spending over 50 years in catering, we have now reached the right time to retire, having completed our journey and helped to transform our historic village pub from inconsistent and unloved back to its former glory. "In today's difficult market, at first, we weren't sure how to go about the sale process, but I met Marslie at the Lakes Hospitality Trade Show and was aware of Christie & Co's reputation. "We are pleased that the sale has successfully completed, and we are grateful for the support and advice provided by Marslie as well as our team of solicitors at Burnetts." The Shepherds Inn, located at the foot of Hartside Pass and situated nine miles east of Penrith, has attracted trade from travellers, tourists, and residents for more than two centuries. The pub has been featured in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide and holds a five-star rating on TripAdvisor. Marslie McGregor, business agent at Christie & Co, said: "The Shepherds Inn offered a brilliant opportunity for a hospitality operator to acquire a renowned, characterful, freehold premises in the beautiful Cumbrian countryside. "The business is highly regarded and has upheld an excellent reputation for many years. "It was a pleasure selling the pub on behalf of Mike and Margaret, who are now looking forward to a well-deserved retirement, and I wish the new owners all the success in their new venture."

A hand-built classic car is helping put a town on the global map. The Malvern-made Morgan Supersport took centre stage at a recent event in London celebrating the UK's most successful car manufacturers. Dame Harriett Baldwin, MP for West Worcestershire, met with Morgan Motor Company's chief commercial officer, Gary Pearson, at the event to discuss the company's international ambitions and the challenges posed by US trade tariffs. Dame Harriett said: "It was great to see a Malvern-built car lining up alongside some of the greatest cars in the world to promote the very best of British manufacturing. "Morgan's historic cars are hand-built by local people at a factory in the heart of Malvern and it has been a proud champion of the town. "I will continue to speak up for Morgan Motors and its highly-valued network of local suppliers as it competes on the world stage and puts Malvern in the global spotlight." The Morgan Supersport was displayed alongside vehicles from Aston Martin, Bentley, Lotus, and McLaren. The event aimed to showcase the success of UK car brands and raise awareness of the contribution of smaller manufacturers to the industry.

US opposes lowering G7 cap on Russian oil, Bloomberg reports
The United States is opposing a proposal by other Group of Seven nations to lower the price cap on Russian oil, Bloomberg reported on June 13. Citing unnamed sources, Bloomberg said the U.S. remains opposed to reducing the cap from $60 to $45 per barrel – a position it first took earlier this year when Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declined to support a similar effort. The price cap, introduced in December 2022 as a measure to limit the Kremlin's ability to finance its war against Ukraine, prohibits Western companies from shipping, insuring, or otherwise servicing Russian oil sold above $60 per barrel. Despite U.S. resistance, the European Union and United Kingdom – backed by other European G7 countries and Canada – have said they are prepared to move forward with the proposal, even without Washington's endorsement. One source told Bloomberg that the EU and U.K. could explore lowering the cap without the U.S., as most of Russia's oil is transported in European waters. However, a unified G7 agreement would carry greater impact if it could be enforced by the U.S. The price cap debate has become more urgent as oil prices, which had fallen below the $60 cap in recent months, surged following Israel's strikes against Iran in the past 24 hours. G7 leaders will revisit the price cap discussion during the upcoming summit, hosted by Canada from June 15-17 in Kananaskis County, Alberta. The summit agenda will also include topics such as support for Ukraine in the Russian war, global economic stability, digital transformation, and climate change. The G7 currently includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The European Union is also represented in the group.
