
Anglian receives record £1.42m fine for drinking water failures
The watchdog said these coatings broke down into flakes and powder, which entered the water supply.
Anglian Water, which provides services to seven million people in the east of England, reported the failures to the DWI before pleading guilty at Northampton Crown Court.
Marcus Rink, DWI's chief inspector, said: 'Public health and drinking water quality must be the highest priority, and there can be no compromise.
'We've taken firm action in the public interest to ensure the company has removed all non-compliant material so that customers can remain confident in their water supplies.'
The watchdog's investigation also uncovered wider issues around Anglian's management of its materials and contractors.
This included a lack of staff training, poor oversight of the supply chain, and in some cases, water tanks continued to be used even after the company knew they contained unapproved products.
DWI said Anglian Water has rectified all of the issues across its network.
Environment Secretary Steve Reed said: 'Contamination of drinking water on any scale is scandalous and a complete disgrace.
'The record £1.4 million fine handed down sends a clear signal that this criminal behaviour is unacceptable.'
The Government is planning to roll out widespread reforms to the water sector in response to public anger over the state of the nation's rivers, lakes and seas.
'As part of our Plan for Change, our landmark Water Act means polluting water bosses face two-year prison sentences and bans unfair multi-million-pound bonuses,' Mr Reed said.
Anglian Water pleaded guilty to five offences under the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2016, which makes mandates that only tested, approved and safe materials come into contact with drinking water.

Tackling digital exclusion will be crucial to raising living standards across the UK as part of the UK government's Plan for Change as it will help more people apply for jobs online, use the NHS app to book doctor's appointments, or get advice on government services.

Employment rises across Pembrokeshire compared to 2024
Employment figures for the county show a four per cent rise in jobseekers finding work compared to the same period last year, pointing to a positive trend in job placements. A spokesman for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) said: "Although a modest rise, the county is seeing an improvement trend; long may that continue. "Staff in our three Jobcentres will continue to put 100 per cent effort into doing what is best for all those jobseekers not yet in work in order to help them gain the skills, knowledge and qualifications to make that step into employment; thus, they will be better off financially to provide for themselves and their families and to boost the economy of Pembrokeshire and Wales which benefits all who live here." The DWP is encouraging employers across Pembrokeshire to take advantage of recruitment support available through local Jobcentres. Fred Hatton of the DWP Pembrokeshire Employer and Partnership Team said: "We want to work with you to fill your vacancies. "Our Jobcentres are open for recruitment events tailored to individual employers, and we regularly host jobs fairs that bring multiple businesses together under one roof. "We can also organise work academies and boot camps to help prepare candidates for your roles." Jobseekers are being offered a range of opportunities to build lifelong skills through pre-employment training and voluntary work experience. A DWP spokesman said: "The programmes provide valuable hands-on experience and help develop essential transferable skills. "They can be a stepping stone to a new career path. "Attending a jobs fair is a great way for jobseekers to meet employers face-to-face, learn about live vacancies, and discover the full range of support available through their local Jobcentre." Nationally, the employment rate stands at 75.3 per cent, a slight increase on the previous quarter. Minister for employment, Alison McGovern, said: "Today's figures show real progress with economic inactivity down, and 384,000 jobs added to the economy since last summer, putting more money in people's pockets. "We are determined to see unemployment fall; that is why we are focused on getting people into good jobs by joining up work, health and skills support and transforming Jobcentres to focus on genuine support, not ticking boxes. "As we grow the economy and transform opportunity in every area with our Plan for Change, we will ensure no one will be left on the scrapheap."

Thames Water could be sold to a Chinese firm after public rescue
Ministers are preparing to take Thames Water into temporary public ownership in a rescue that could pave the way for it to be sold off to a Chinese infrastructure company. Steve Reed, the environment secretary, is understood to be making 'active preparations' to put Britain's largest water utility into a special administration regime (SAR). That would, in effect, nationalise Thames, wiping out much of its £16.8 billion debt, as the government looks for a new buyer. The Times understands that one of the leading contenders is CKI, which has said it could take over Thames within weeks of it going into special administration. CKI has made clear that it would be prepared to operate within the new regime of tougher fines for environmental infringements, which Thames's creditors say is financially unviable. The company already owns Northumbrian Water and UK Power Networks. Selling Thames to CKI would be controversial. Concern about Chinese control of critical infrastructure is widespread, and this year CKI's parent company sold its interest in the Panama Canal port operator under pressure from President Trump. • Alistair Osborne: Labour needs to pull the plug on Thames water torture Yesterday, Reed approved the appointment of FTI Consulting to advise on contingency plans for Thames to be placed into special administration, which would ensure that customers continued to receive water and sewerage services should Thames collapse, but could put taxpayers on the hook for billions of pounds in bailout costs when the public finances are already severely constrained. The special administration process can be instigated only in the event that a company becomes insolvent, can no longer fulfil its statutory duties or breaches an enforcement order. The government could in effect force the company into special administration if it does not agree to the bailout terms being proposed by creditors. Reed has previously stressed his desire to avoid taking Thames into temporary public ownership, but has said that he was ready for 'all eventualities'. Two senior government sources said the situation had changed and a taxpayer bailout was the most likely option. One said: 'The political benefits of an SAR are apparent to us and it is now something we are looking very seriously at and preparing for it to happen.' • Water firms cause more than 100 potentially illegal sewage spills a day Another suggested it was now the government's favoured option in the absence of a better deal from creditors. A source close to the creditors said they had had no direct contact with ministers and warned that effectively wiping out Thames debtors would send a 'chilling message' to other investors. 'It would look like the government siding with one institution with close links to the Chinese state at the expense of blue-chip UK financial institutions,' they said. Thames has been in financial crisis since the spring of last year when international shareholders quit the company saying it was no longer investable. It is the worst in the sector for pollution incidents and mains leakages.
