Jasprit Bumrah's Instagram Post After India-England Series Draws Ire, Here's Why

News18a day ago
Jasprit Bumrah's celebratory photos after the drawn Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between India and England have managed to irk cricket fans online. But why?
Such is the aura of Jasprit Bumrah that, despite missing the final Test between India and England at The Oval, the 31-year-old premier pacer became one of the top-trending keywords in India. Why? Because Bumrah's workload management and reported knee injury, ahead of the final clash, along with the need to safeguard his back, kept him away from doing what he loved. This led to the formation of two sides on the Internet. One believed that Bumrah should have simply shown up for all five Test clashes in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The other clan, which included the likes of Australian great Glenn McGrath, who believed that the No.1 Test bowler needed a much-needed break from action, an off-season, as he was bound to get injured, given he put so much into every ball he delivered.
This time around, the cricket 'fans" have found another reason to get upset with Bumrah, and it has something to do with his new Instagram post.
Great Memories
Bumrah, in a heartfelt Instagram post, looked back at the series that produced several moments of brilliance on the cricket field between the two highly competitive nations and the 25 days of Test cricket that turned into an enthralling away series for India.
'We take back great memories from a highly competitive and enthralling test series! Looking forward to what's next," the bowler captioned his update.
'Where's Siraj?"
'Why didn't Bumrah mention Mohammed Siraj?" The online commentators wondered why there was no specific mention of his fellow teammate Siraj, who played a pivotal role in India's hard-fought drawn series against the hosts, England.
Bumrah's multiple photo upload included snaps of himself in action on the field, while two slides captured the team and support staff that travelled to England.

The Bumrah Hate
Bumrah has been subjected to incessant trolling and criticism through the course of the five-match Test series. The premier pacer had to sit out two Test matches to rest his body and avoid any potential major injuries that would perhaps keep him away from the cricket field.
Despite missing two Test matches, Bumrah scalped 14 English wickets, the fourth-highest in the bowling chart. The third on the list was England captain Ben Stokes with 17 in 4 matches. Josh Tongue settled for the second spot with 19 wickets in 3 Tests. India's Mohammed Siraj topped the list with 23 wickets. The pacer, who became the primary bowler in India's bowling attack, had an impressive attendance of 100%.
Mohammed Siraj Shines
In the absence of Bumrah, Siraj stepped up and how. Knowing that the entire nation had now pinned their hopes on him, Siraj produced the performance of his lifetime as he ran the hard yards day in and day out across all five Test matches he featured in for India.
Siraj delivered 1113 balls or 185.3 overs in total and picked 23 wickets at an average of 32.43. The cricketer, who hails from Hyderabad, picked 9 of those in the final Test at The Oval alone, a performance that was instrumental in helping India secure a well-deserved drawn series. The final Test card between India and England read 2-2.

England, needing 35 runs on the fifth and final day at The Oval attracted thousands of fans to the stadium on a cheerful Monday morning. India held their nerves, and Siraj picked three out of the four remaining English wickets to bring up a nail-biting win for the visiting side captained by Player of the Series Shubman Gill.
Fittingly enough, the last English batter to depart, Gus Atkinson, was castled by Siraj. Siraj took home the Player of the Match award.
India snatched the match by 6 runs.

Shubman Gill to lead North Zone in Duleep Trophy after England show; selectors keep door open for Asia Cup selection

Following his stellar performance as India's Test captain in his maiden assignment during the tour of England, where the visitors secured a thrilling 2-2 draw in the five-match series, Shubman Gill has been named captain of the North Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, beginning August 28. Shubman Gill led the Indian team to a 2-2 series draw in five-match Test series against England.(PTI) Gill took over the Test captaincy after Rohit Sharma's retirement in May this year. Despite initial apprehensions over the BCCI's decision, he vindicated the move by scoring 754 runs in 10 innings – the second-highest by an Indian in a single Test series after Sunil Gavaskar's 774 in the 1971 West Indies tour, and the most ever by an Indian captain in one series. His performance helped India draw the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2. With this selection, Gill is set to return to action just three weeks after the energy-sapping England tour, which concluded on August 4. North Zone squad: Shubman Gill (captain, PCA), Ankit Kumar (vice-captain, HCA), Shubham Khajuria (JKCA), Ayush Badoni (DDCA), Yash Dhull (DDCA), Ankit Kalsi (HPCA), Nishant Sindhu (HCA), Sahil Lotra (JKCA), Mayank Dagar (HPCA), Yudhvir Singh Charak (JKCA), Arshdeep Singh (PCA), Harshit Rana (DDCA), Anshul Kamboj (HCA), Auqib Nabi (JKCA), Kanhaiya Wadhawan (wicketkeeper, JKCA). BCCI Keeps Shubman Gill's Asia Cup Chances Alive North Zone's Duleep Trophy campaign begins on August 28 against East Zone, with the final scheduled for September 11 — a timeline that overlaps with India's Asia Cup campaign, starting on September 10 against the UAE. However, the BCCI has left the door open for Gill — as well as Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana — to be called up for the Asia Cup, should they be selected. The selectors have named Shubman Rohilla (SSCB), Gurnoor Brar, and Anul Thakral as backups. Earlier, PTI had reported that Gill, along with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan, is in contention for a place in India's Asia Cup squad. The selection committee is reportedly weighing its options carefully, especially with the home Test series against the West Indies looming shortly after the Asia Cup. "There is a five-week break and with no cricket around, these three should walk into any T20 squad despite the stupendous show by Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. In 21 days at the Asia Cup, if one plays till the final, there are just six T20 games — not much of a workload. But with 17-member squads allowed, selectors will weigh the options carefully," a BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

Gary Kirsten reveals one highlight of India coaching tenure: Getting Ishant Sharma to bat in nets to save Test match vs Australia in 2010

Former World Cup winning coach with India Gary Kirsten on Thursday revealed one of the highlights of his tenure with the Men in blue. And it does not involve the World Cup win in this instance. The South African focussed on a rather unexpected anecdote- asking pacer Ishant Sharma to practice batting in the nets so that he could help VVS Laxman save a Test against Australia in Mohali in 2010. 'One highlight in my three years with the Indian team was getting Ishant Sharma to come down to the nets with his batting pads and then to get him to face 48 balls in the Test match against Australia with VVS Laxman to win the game. That was a highlight for me to work on his batting,' Kirsten said. 'I really enjoyed that from a leadership perspective because he didn't think he could bat. And he still can't bat that well, but we kind of helped him get through that Test match and do really well,' Kirsten said. In the match, set a target of 216, India were left staring down the barrel at 124 for eight but Laxman (73 not out), first with Ishant (31), and then alongside No.11 Pragyan Ojha, guided India to a memorable one-wicket win. He also lauded Gautam Gambhir for his coaching prowess which led to India drawing the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2. Kirsten was Gambhir's coach when the latter played a fine knock of 97 in the 2011 ODI World Cup final against Sri Lanka. 'I'm really happy for the Indian cricket team for levelling the series and it's great for Indian cricket. I'm really pleased for Gautam Gambhir as well, I know him well. Really delighted and pleased for what he's achieved with the team,' Kirsten said. 'They're (India) doing really well at the moment. We all get excited by the success of the Indian team, I certainly do. They've got a great bunch of young players coming through now and it's really exciting to be supporting them,' added Kirsten.
