Trio of Florida Gators named to 2025 Comeback Player of the Year Award watch list

USA Today21 hours ago
The 2025 Comeback Player of the Year Award preseason watch list was released ahead of the start of the upcoming college football campaign and included a trio of Florida Gators.
Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Eugene Wilson III, redshirt junior defensive lineman Jamari Lyons and redshirt sophomore defensive back Aaron Gates were among those named. All three have dealt with significant injury adversity and are looking to prove a point on the gridiron this fall.
Wilson suffered a season-ending hip injury in his second year following a phenomenal freshman campaign that showcased his electric qualities on offense. Last year, he played in the team's first four games hauling in 19 receptions for 266 yards and a touchdown — that score coming on an 85-yard jet toss from DJ Lagway against Samford — before being sidelined.
Lyons suffered a season-ending injury prior to the opening kickoff of 2024 after recording 20 tackles (10 solo) and 2.5 tackles for loss in 2023, which had set him up for high expectations. His broken ankle required two surgeries and multiple rehab stints, but he appears prepared for his return in 2025.
Gates suffered a torn ACL in the Ole Miss late last November, taking him out of action for the team's final two games — against the Florida State Seminoles to close out the regular season and Tulane Green Wave at the Gasparilla Bowl. Still, he was an important contributor at the STAR position, finishing fifth on the team in tackles-for-loss with a 4.0 and logged a total of 27 tackles (14 solo), along with an interception, three pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and a quarterback hurry.
About the Comeback Player of the Year Award
Since 2018, the Comeback Player of the Year Award watch list has been comprised of 75 student-athletes who overcame an injury, illness or other circumstance in the previous year. Each player returned to full health for the 2025 season and showcased their skills, helping their teams compete to their highest potential.
The Comeback Player of the Year Award honors three of the athletes who were named to the watch list as winners of the award. The three winners are chosen by a panel of Associated Press college football writers and sports information directors.

SI's preseason bowl projections have Florida football playing in Citrus Bowl vs Nebraska

The college football season has yet to start, but that does not prevent the sports media from looking ahead to the postseason — despite it being four months away. Recently, Sports Illustrated joined its publishing peers in producing its predictions for the 2025 bowl season, which included the Florida Gators. In it, he has Billy Napier and Co. heading down the turnpike to face the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Citrus Bowl on Wednesday, Dec. 31. The Orange and Blue have played in the Citrus Bowl just three times prior despite being just an hour-and-a-half down the road, winning just once — a 21-6 victory over the Penn State Nittany Lions on Jan. 1, 1988. Florida has faced Nebraska twice in the postseason losing both times, including a demoralizing 62-24 defeat in the Fiesta Bowl for the 1995 national title. Other preseason bowl projections for Florida football CBS Sports writer Brad Crawford predicts that Napier and Co. will battle Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Gator Bowl held in Jacksonville, Florida, on Dec. 27. ESPN's Kyle Bonagura foresees Florida playing in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee, against the Kansas Jayhawks on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, while his colleague Mark Schlabach has Napier and Co. playing on the same day in the Duke's Mayo Bowl held in Charlotte, North Carolina, against the Duke Blue Devils. 4 Steelers positional battles to watch in preseason finale vs. Panthers

The Pittsburgh Steelers' preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers has finally arrived — and that means several exciting positional battles will likely come to an end. From offense, defense, and special teams, here are four Steelers positional battles that could have their winners decided on Thursday. P: Corliss Waitman vs. Cameron Johnston Waitman and Johnston have kept this battle neck-and-neck heading into the preseason finale — but only one punter will remain on the Steelers' 53-man roster. Every Steelers punt will be under a microscope on Thursday, as both Waitman and Johnston could be one kick away from sealing the starting job. RB2: Kaleb Johnson vs. Kenneth Gainwell The unofficial depth chart listed Johnson as the RB3 behind Gainwell, and the preseason opener did little to help the rookie's case. Johnson bounced back in a major way against the Buccaneers, however, and could lock up the RB2 role with an equally impressive showing. QB3: Skylar Thompson vs. himself In large part due to Will Howard's absence, Thompson has only one person to outperform on Thursday: himself. The former Dolphins QB kicked open a seemingly locked door for the QB3 spot with a strong preseason performance — but he needs another solid showing against the Panthers to cement his place on the Steelers' roster as the third-string quarterback. LB: Cole Holcomb vs. Payton Wilson vs. Patrick Queen It shouldn't surprise anyone that — after two dominant preseason performances — Holcomb has put himself back into the starting linebacker conversation. Wilson and Queen will see their playing time with the starters, attempting to hold off the human tackling machine that is Holcomb. MSU hoops' Tom Izzo feels he's 'adjusted to this new era' of college basketball

Tom Izzo: 'I've adjusted to this new era more than I think. Sure, there have been some rough spots. But players are the most important thing to me.' The college basketball world is ever changing, and Spartans head coach Tom Izzo believes he's adjusted more than many believe. Izzo was speaking at the Larry Shyatt's coaching clinic on Wednesday, where he addressed a number of items in the world of college basketball. One of which was the ever changing nature of the college basketball landscape and how he's been forced to change his philosophy on a number of things. Per a post on social media from college basketball insider and reporter Jeff Goodman, Izzo believes he has "adjusted" more than he thinks, and acknowledged that it wasn't always easy for him to make the necessary changes. 'I've adjusted to this new era more than I think," Izzo said during the coaching clinic. "Sure, there have been some rough spots. But players are the most important thing to me.' This past year's success on the court for the Spartans helps vindicate that statement from Izzo, with Michigan State claiming the Big Ten title by more than three games and reaching the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. Hearing Izzo acknowledge that there have "been some rough spots" should also be promising for fans since it shows he isn't set in his old ways and is clearly adjusting to the new era of college basketball.
