Harry Brook Baffled By Gautam Gambhir's Player Of The Series Pick, Says This Star Deserved Honour
"I didn't score as many runs as Rooty (Joe Root), so I probably think he should be Man of the Series or Man of the Summer," Brook said. "He has been for many years."
Root finished the series with 537 runs to his name, emerging as the top-scoring batter for his side, only behind India's Gill in the overall list. Brook, in comparison, scored 481 runs, slotting in at the No. 5 spot in the overall list and second among England batters. Yet, Gambhir felt the Brook was worthy of the Player of the Series award.
When Brook and Root were batting in the middle on Day 4 of the 5th Test, it looked like the series was in England's grasp. But, the duo's dismissal flipped the situation dramatically in India's favour.
"My thought process was just to try and hit as many runs as quick as possible," he said at the post-match presentation. "The game's done if we need 40 runs with me and Rooty in there. If I get out there, the game's still done. Obviously, it didn't work."
Speaking to BBC Test Match Special, Brook added: "At the time, I was very confident. If I'd got a quick 30 in the next couple of overs, then the game is done. That was my thought process. I always try and take the game on and put them under pressure... I wish I was there at the end."

"I've played all right," he said. "I could have won that game yesterday, which is devastating, but I'm just happy to contribute to as many games as I can."
"My first game is on Thursday, so it's a fairly quick turnaround," he said. "There's a lot of cricket to be played... hopefully, everybody stays fit and we'll be raring to go."

Bumrah played all five Tests against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, he went down in the Sydney match due to a back spasm, leading to him being ruled out of the ICC Men's Champions Trophy. He then also missed the initial few games for the Mumbai Indians. However, he made his much-awaited return in the game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Before the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Bumrah informed the BCCI that he would play just three Tests against England to manage his workload. 'If I was the India chief selector, I would have convinced Mukesh Ambani (Mumbai Indians owner) and Bumrah that it was important for Bumrah to miss the IPL for the England series, or play a lesser number of matches in the IPL. I'm sure that they would have agreed to do so,' he added. 'Who remembers IPL?' In the three Tests Bumrah played against England, the pacer returned with two five-wicket hauls at Headingley and Lord's. Vengsarkar believes Bumrah should have prioritised Tests, as no one really remembers the runs and wickets in the IPL. 'Who remembers the runs and wickets taken in the IPL? However, people will remember Mohammed Siraj's lion-hearted performance in this series, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant's sublime batting, and Washington Sundar's superb all-round performance,' said Vengsarkar. The former India captain believes India could have won the series had Bumrah been available for the entire contest. However, he also stated that the pacer cannot be blamed, as he underwent back surgery recently. 'It was a series for the ages and I wish Bumrah was available for almost all the Tests. We could have won the series if that was the case,' said Vengsarkar. "You can't blame Bumrah for missing matches at times. We must remember that Bumrah has undergone back surgery. His back is vulnerable, and we must be cautious with him. You can't question his commitment for the country. He has given his all whenever he has played for India. I hope he returns for India after adequate rest and when fully fit," he added.

Former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar has said that, considering the importance of the five-match Test series against England, ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah should have been asked by the BCCI to miss IPL 2025, as the debate around his workload continues to go around. Bumrah played three of the just-concluded five-Test series in which an inexperienced India eked out a creditable 2-2 draw. The two matches that India won didn't feature Bumrah because of a pre-decided workload management plan. 'Considering the importance of the India versus England Test series and his fragile back, Bumrah should have been told by the BCCI, selectors and the Indian team management to miss IPL 2025," Vengsarkar said while speaking to The Times of India. Bumrah's planned absence, in the must-win fifth and final Test, did raise some questions about the handling of his workload, but the team management made it clear that the premier pacer couldn't have been risked. Bumrah finished with 14 wickets in three matches at an impressive economy of three and an average of 26.
