VP Sara Duterte Opposes Online Gambling, Cites Risks to Families and Youth

Filipino Times4 days ago
Vice President Sara Duterte has declared her firm opposition to all forms of online gambling, aligning herself with ongoing proposals in Congress that aim to implement a total ban.
Speaking at the 'Free Duterte Now' rally in The Hague, Netherlands, Duterte emphasized that online gambling is dangerous, especially for young people, due to the lack of parental control over internet access.
'I am against online gambling. Hindi ako sang-ayon sa lahat ng klase ng pagsusugal online dahil hindi nakokontrol ng mga magulang ang access ng kanilang mga anak diyaan sa internet,' she said.
She warned that online gambling can lead to financial losses and even family debt, noting how easily people can create gambling accounts with little to no restriction.
'Okay ako sa regulated gambling kung saan di lahat nakakasugal, pero kapag nilagay mo siya online… di ako sang-ayon doon dahil nakakasira ng pamilya yun at nakakasira ng kinabukasan ng kabataan,' Duterte added.
Her position echoes growing concern in Congress, where several lawmakers from both chambers support a complete ban, believing that regulation alone is not enough to prevent the harmful effects of online gambling.
The Department of Health has also weighed in, calling online gambling a public health issue that may impair one's ability to function at work and could even cause personal harm.

Marcos says fourth SONA speech nearly complete

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said his upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA) speech is 80% complete, even after losing several days of preparation due to his official visit to the United States. The President acknowledged that the trip cost him three days of SONA work but assured the public that efforts are underway to finalize the speech. 'What we have already written is substantial in terms of- the SONA is about 80 percent written. So, kaunti na lang 'yung fine-tuning,' he added. Marcos said his fourth SONA will differ from his previous addresses, as it reflects the country's current situation. He said the speech will continue to focus on the administration's social programs. 'We will talk about the programs that we have initiated and will continue to promote and endorse… at the very least, until the end of this term. Hopefully, it will continue after my term,' the President said. The President is set to deliver his fourth SONA before a joint session of Congress on Monday, July 28.

A mechanism set to support pandemic preparedness in low- and middle-income countries is set to be launched later this week. The Department of Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef), will officially launch the Pandemic Fund. PNP Chief Accepts Baste Duterte's Fistfight Dare as Charity Boxing Match

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Nicolas Torre III has accepted the challenge of Davao City Acting Mayor Baste Duterte to a fistfight—but with a twist: Torre proposed it be held as a charity boxing match instead. Torre said the fight could be a way to raise funds for victims of Typhoon Crising and recent flooding, suggesting a Sunday bout at the Araneta Coliseum. 'Maybe this is a very good time for a charity boxing match. At least Mayor Baste and I can help those affected by the storm,' Torre told reporters. 'I'm sure a lot of people will want to watch.' The challenge stemmed from a vlog posted by Duterte, in which he called Torre out and accused him of being brave only because of his position. Duterte claimed he could beat the police chief in a fight, but labeled him a coward. The online spat follows recent tension between the Duterte family and the Marcos administration, amid ongoing political drama surrounding Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment and her brother Baste's appointment as acting mayor of Davao City.
