Cross-border tourism suffers as Cambodia-Thai dispute drags

The Star16 hours ago
PHNOM PENH: Cross-border tourism between Cambodia and Thailand has dropped due to the ongoing diplomatic dispute between both countries.
However, domestic travel near Preah Vihear province is thriving.
The movement of people and goods across the border between the two countries has come to a grinding halt following the closure of border crossing points.
Both governments have been engaged in an altercation following a May 28 skirmish between Cambodian and Thai troops.
"Since the conflict, tourism exchanges with Thailand-both border crossings and air travel-have significantly declined, heavily impacting both sides.
"However, on the Cambodian side, there has been a noticeable increase in travel activity, as many Cambodians visit disputed areas such as Preah Vihear Temple and other nearby sites.
"This trend is also observed along other border regions, where local communities support frontline soldiers and their families,' Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Cambodia Chapter President Thourn Sinan told Bernama.
Domestic tourism in areas such as Sra Em in Preah Vihear has increased, with Cambodians visiting to support troops and locals.
Hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants in these areas are currently operating at full capacity on weekends, he said.
Thailand-Cambodia diplomatic relations became hostile following the May 28 brief exchange of gunfire between soldiers of both countries stationed near the Preah Vihear province in northern Cambodia. One Cambodian soldier died in the incident.
The dispute, besides straining bilateral ties, also damaged trade activities in the border areas. Both countries share an 817-kilometre-long border.
Sinan said Cambodia shares over 10 official checkpoints with Thailand along the border. However, only five of these are regularly used by international tourists. The remaining checkpoints mainly serve trade and local border movement.
The busy Aranyaprathet-Poipet border checkpoint, an important route to the world-famous Angkor Wat, is also closed.
Only patients seeking medical care and students continue to cross over to Thailand at present.
There has been no interruption to air services.
"Flights between both countries are still operating but Cambodian outbound travel to Thailand has plummeted by about 95 per cent due to safety concerns and growing anti-Cambodian sentiment in Thailand.
"The overall stability of air travel is uncertain, as it depends on Thailand's internal political dynamics, which remain volatile,' he said.
At the centre of the controversy are the territories where the ancient temples of Ta Muen Thom, Ta Muen Toch, and Ta Krabey are located, and the Emerald Triangle bordering Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos.
Cambodia has refused to hold bilateral talks to resolve the decades-long issue but instead referred the dispute to the International Court of Justice on June 15. - Bernama

Asean secretary-general urges stronger cruise tourism ties with India

JAKARTA: (Bernama) Asean secretary-general Dr Kao Kim Hourn has outlined actions to be taken under the Asean-India Tourism Work Plan 2023-2027 to advance cruise tourism cooperation between the two regions. Speaking virtually from Jakarta during the Asean-India Cruise Dialogue 2025 held in Chennai on Monday (June 30), he said the initiative provides a timely platform to deepen maritime tourism and strengthen regional connectivity. "The Cruise Dialogue offers a strategic platform to translate our shared aspirations into action. By working together, we can develop initiatives that link heritage, culture, and communities across our coastal regions,' he said in a video message released by the Asean Secretariat. Kao outlined several priorities under the work plan, including the development of integrated cruise circuits, enhancement of port infrastructure with digital systems, and promotion of joint investments in cruise-related services. He emphasised capacity-building in cruise operations and hospitality, especially targeting youth and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and called for stronger coordination through the Asean Task Force on Tourism and Transport. Sustainability was also a key theme, with calls to protect marine ecosystems, improve climate resilience, and harness digital platforms to enhance passenger experiences and operational coordination. "These areas of cooperation reflect the potential for Asean and India to lead in sustainable and inclusive cruise tourism,' Kao said, noting India's US$5 million contribution to the Asean-India Fund as a vital support mechanism. With over 40 cruise destinations in Asean and major port upgrades underway, he said the sector is emerging as a strategic growth area. The dialogue was held as part of the Asean-India Year of Tourism aimed at strengthening tourism ties between the two regions. Travel between Asean and India has been growing, with about 5.88 million Indian tourists visiting Asean last year and 660,000 visitors from Asean countries travelling to India, Kao added. - Bernama

MM2H Gains Popularity Among Thais For Education, Lifestyle Appeal

WORLD Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing launching the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign in Bangkok here on Tuesday. By Kenny Teng Khoon Hock BANGKOK, July 1 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme continues to gain traction among Thais, driven by cultural familiarity, proximity, and a competitive cost of living, said Tourism Malaysia's Bangkok office. Director of Tourism Malaysia in Bangkok, Nurul Ain Mohammed Yunus, noted that an increasing number of individuals and families from the region are looking beyond short-term travel, opting instead for longer-term stays in countries that offer quality of life, stability, and opportunity. "Thailand has emerged as a promising market for the MM2H segment. 'A key appeal for Thai MM2H applicants is our education sector. Malaysia is fast becoming an education hub in Asia, with globally ranked universities, international schools, and a multilingual learning environment," she told Bernama after a business matching session held in Bangkok on Monday. Nurul Ain added that thousands of international students, including those from Thailand, are choosing Malaysia for its proximity, affordability, and academic quality. She said that Malaysia offers all these and more - a safe, affordable, and multicultural living environment with access to world-class healthcare, modern infrastructure, and a strong sense of community. On Monday, Malaysia's Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing made a working visit to Bangkok to enhance bilateral tourism cooperation and lay the foundation for stronger ties ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026). Tiong paid a courtesy call to his Thai counterpart, the Minister of Tourism and Sports Sorawong Thienthong, before meeting with tourism industry players in Thailand.

Malaysia targets Thai visitors with sustainable travel campaign ahead of VM2026

BANGKOK: Malaysia launched a major campaign to attract more Thai travellers ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), promoting the country as a top destination for sustainable and inclusive travel experiences. Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said VM2026 highlights Malaysia's wide-ranging tourism assets, including eco-parks in Sabah and Sarawak, Unesco heritage sites, vibrant multicultural urban experiences, and tranquil coastal retreats. "We are focusing on seamless accessibility, improved infrastructure, and sustainability-driven experiences that meet the changing preferences of modern travellers," he said in his speech during the VM2026 launch event in Bangkok on Tuesday. Tiong, who is currently leading a tourism promotional campaign in Bangkok, remarked that Thailand and Malaysia share a strong friendship rooted in shared cultural values, people-to-people connections, and robust cross-border trade. He underscored that as Southeast Asia recovers in the post-pandemic era, tourism is regaining its status as a critical pillar for regional economic revitalisation. "Within Asean, we must see each other as collaborators rather than competitors. By working together, we can strengthen travel corridors, offer more appealing tourism packages, and create richer, more meaningful experiences for both regional and international visitors," he said. For the record, Malaysia received 13.4 million international visitors from January to April this year, marking a 21 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. Of these, 833,610 visitors were from Thailand, representing a 3.4 per cent year-on-year growth and solidifying Thailand's status as a key market. - BERNAMA
