Cross-border tourism suffers as Cambodia-Thai dispute drags

The Star01-07-2025
PHNOM PENH: Cross-border tourism between Cambodia and Thailand has dropped due to the ongoing diplomatic dispute between both countries.
However, domestic travel near Preah Vihear province is thriving.
The movement of people and goods across the border between the two countries has come to a grinding halt following the closure of border crossing points.
Both governments have been engaged in an altercation following a May 28 skirmish between Cambodian and Thai troops.
"Since the conflict, tourism exchanges with Thailand-both border crossings and air travel-have significantly declined, heavily impacting both sides.
"However, on the Cambodian side, there has been a noticeable increase in travel activity, as many Cambodians visit disputed areas such as Preah Vihear Temple and other nearby sites.
"This trend is also observed along other border regions, where local communities support frontline soldiers and their families,' Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Cambodia Chapter President Thourn Sinan told Bernama.
Domestic tourism in areas such as Sra Em in Preah Vihear has increased, with Cambodians visiting to support troops and locals.
Hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants in these areas are currently operating at full capacity on weekends, he said.
Thailand-Cambodia diplomatic relations became hostile following the May 28 brief exchange of gunfire between soldiers of both countries stationed near the Preah Vihear province in northern Cambodia. One Cambodian soldier died in the incident.
The dispute, besides straining bilateral ties, also damaged trade activities in the border areas. Both countries share an 817-kilometre-long border.
Sinan said Cambodia shares over 10 official checkpoints with Thailand along the border. However, only five of these are regularly used by international tourists. The remaining checkpoints mainly serve trade and local border movement.
The busy Aranyaprathet-Poipet border checkpoint, an important route to the world-famous Angkor Wat, is also closed.
Only patients seeking medical care and students continue to cross over to Thailand at present.
There has been no interruption to air services.
"Flights between both countries are still operating but Cambodian outbound travel to Thailand has plummeted by about 95 per cent due to safety concerns and growing anti-Cambodian sentiment in Thailand.
"The overall stability of air travel is uncertain, as it depends on Thailand's internal political dynamics, which remain volatile,' he said.
At the centre of the controversy are the territories where the ancient temples of Ta Muen Thom, Ta Muen Toch, and Ta Krabey are located, and the Emerald Triangle bordering Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos.
Cambodia has refused to hold bilateral talks to resolve the decades-long issue but instead referred the dispute to the International Court of Justice on June 15. - Bernama

Sinn Chanserey Vutha, secretary of state and spokesperson for Cambodia's State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, said an Airbus 320 aircraft was used in the test flights between the old Phnom Penh International Airport (PPIA) and the TIA. He said the flight, carrying a total of 100 passengers, departed from the PPIA for the TIA on Friday morning and returned from the TIA to the PPIA safely. "In sum, test flights were successful as all equipment and staff members at the airport worked well," Vutha said in an audio message. Mao Havannall, minister in charge of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, said on Monday that the TIA will start official operations on Sept 9, and its official inauguration ceremony will be held on Oct 20 under the auspices of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. The TIA is classified as a 4F-level airport, the highest level in the world. Work on the airport project began in 2020, with the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) being the contractor. Invested by Cambodia Airport Investment Co., Ltd., the 1.5-billion-U.S.-dollar airport has been developed on an area of 2,600 hectares in Kandal and Takeo provinces, about 20 km from the capital Phnom Penh. - Xinhua

Thai government launches crypto-to-Baht scheme to boost tourism

BANGKOK: The Thai government is set to launch a new scheme on Monday (Aug 18) to revitalise its tourism industry by allowing foreign visitors to convert cryptocurrency into Thai Baht for payments. The initiative, named "TouristDigiPay," is a direct response to a significant slowdown in tourism this year, primarily due to a decline in visitors from China. The details of the programme will be unveiled at a press conference led by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, alongside key officials from the Finance Ministry, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. The concept of using cryptocurrency to stimulate tourism has been under continuous review by the government. The SEC recently completed a public consultation on the use of financial innovation and digital assets to support economic and tourism growth, with the feedback period closing on Wednesday (Aug 13). Under the new regulations, foreign tourists wishing to convert digital assets into baht for spending must open an account with a digital asset business and an e-money provider, both of which are regulated by the SEC and the Bank of Thailand (BOT) respectively. The scheme will operate within a regulatory 'sandbox' to ensure proper oversight and risk management, particularly to prevent the direct use of digital assets as a means of payment. Only foreign tourists temporarily staying in Thailand will be eligible to use the service. Participants must undergo stringent Know Your Customer (KYC) and customer due diligence (CDD) checks, in line with AMLO's criteria. The service will enable tourists to exchange their digital assets for baht and make electronic payments, such as through QR code scanning. - The Nation/ANN
