Over the past four decades, Cisco has significantly influenced the evolution of networking technology, facilitating the seamless communication of computers and devices while integrating security, power, and connectivity into the digital landscape.
The Network Evolution:
The introduction of TCP/IP in the 1970s and Cisco's launch of its first multiprotocol router in 1986 marked pivotal moments in establishing the foundation for the modern internet. This era witnessed the convergence of once-isolated technologies, setting the scene for major digital transformations in areas like email, e-commerce, and multimedia content sharing.
As the internet grew in accessibility during the 1990s and early 2000s, Cisco solidified its leadership role through innovations such as Voice over IP (VoIP) and the development of early wireless standards, enabling a flexible network environment that fostered new forms of online interaction.
As more people joined online platforms, the network absorbed security, power (with innovations like Power over Ethernet), and the ability to deliver stable, always-on connectivity. The 2010s saw an explosion of big data and cloud computing, with Cisco adapting its capabilities to enable real-time network analysis and the functioning of IoT devices, while addressing growing cybersecurity threats with advanced firewalls and protection mechanisms.
In the current AI era, Cisco remains at the forefront of technology by continuously shaping the networking landscape and providing the high-speed infrastructure needed for complex workloads and integrating solutions such as Cisco Hypershield and AI Defence to combat new security challenges, in an increasingly interconnected world.
Looking Ahead:
Looking at the future of networking technology, it is being reshaped by significant trends, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT).
AI is expected to revolutionise network management by enabling systems to learn from their own traffic, allowing for predictive problem-solving, instant data re-routing, and enhanced streaming or gaming experiences. This advancement will transform AI into the 'brain' of networks, facilitating personalised connectivity and proactive cyber threat neutralisation. The emergence of Agentic AI takes this a step further, as AI agents not only interact with users but also collaborate with one another, automating complex business functions such as supply chain management. However, as these capabilities evolve, organisations must implement ethical guidelines to ensure fairness, transparency, and protection of intellectual property in AI-driven decisions.
Simultaneously, the IoT is expected to introduce hundreds of billions of connected devices in the near future, turning homes into mini data centres that manage various aspects of daily life, from appliances to vehicles.
This rapid growth in connectivity will demand increased bandwidth and reliability as innovations like wearables and projection technologies redefine work and entertainment experiences. Looking ahead, the challenge lies in evolving the network without losing the foundational technologies that have come before.
Key questions remain regarding security integration in this expanding digital landscape and how to make advanced computational technologies like quantum computing accessible to a broader range of organisations.

AI-powered cyber security for the region is a must for smooth digital transformation
The Middle East is undergoing one of the most ambitious digital transformations the world has seen. National strategies such as Saudi Vision 2030, the UAE's Digital Economy Strategy, and Qatar's Smart Nation framework are setting bold targets for a connected, intelligent future. These plans are already reshaping key sectors including energy, transport, healthcare, and manufacturing. Technologies like 5G, AI, and IoT are central to this shift, but their rapid adoption is bringing a critical challenge to the surface. With every new layer of connectivity comes a growing cybersecurity risk. The region now finds itself at a decisive moment: how can it scale digital innovation while ensuring the security and resilience of the networks that support it? Hyperconnectivity brings new levels of risk By the end of the decade, over one billion IoT devices are expected to be deployed across the GCC. While this will unlock new efficiencies and services, it will also multiply the points of vulnerability. Already, 15% of organisations in the region have experienced data breaches costing over $100,000. The threat landscape itself is evolving. Cybercriminals are using AI to generate new malware, automate large-scale attacks, and even create convincing deepfake phishing campaigns. These tactics can easily bypass legacy security systems. Despite this, the region is demonstrating encouraging levels of cloud readiness. Only 24% of regional businesses feel unprepared for cloud-related threats, compared to 34% globally. This reflects a growing understanding of the importance of building resilience into cloud-native systems. But as risks evolve, so must the defenses. Predictive threat detection and real-time response will be key to navigating what comes next. Intelligent networks and cyber resilience To secure the future, Middle Eastern enterprises must embrace networks capable of defending themselves. This means embedding intelligence, automation, and continuous verification directly into the fabric of network infrastructure. AI is already proving its value in 5G security. A strong example is the generative AI assistant within NetGuard Cybersecurity Dome, built on Microsoft Azure OpenAI GPT, which demonstrates how large language models can enhance threat detection and accelerate informed decision-making during cyber incidents. Yet identifying threats is only the first step. True cyber resilience demands more. It requires a shift to Zero Trust models, where every user, device, and application interaction is continuously authenticated to eliminate assumptions of trust. It also calls for automated incident response systems that can take decisive action in real time, dramatically reducing human error and accelerating resolution. Just as importantly, networks must harness real-time analytics to detect and mitigate vulnerabilities before they can be exploited. These intelligent capabilities are no longer theoretical, they are being deployed across the region today. With the right tools in place, telecom operators and enterprises are beginning to move from reactive defense to proactive protection, where threats are anticipated and neutralized before they cause harm. A commitment to secure transformation Governments across the GCC are taking serious steps to strengthen national cybersecurity posture. The UAE's Cybersecurity Strategy is embedding AI into the country's digital infrastructure. Saudi Arabia's National Cybersecurity Authority is developing frameworks for critical infrastructure protection. Qatar is fostering collaboration between public and private sectors to strengthen cloud resilience. Together, these efforts signal that the region is ready not just to adapt to cyber threats, but to lead in shaping global standards. To do so, the next phase of investment must focus on scalable cloud-native security, AI-powered threat detection, and unified threat response platforms. Building a secure hyperconnected future As digital transformation accelerates, Nokia continues to support the region's cybersecurity goals through innovations that are specifically designed for telecom and enterprise environments. Cisco Releases Report On Agentic AI's Potential In Customer Service
Cisco has announced the findings of its latest global research report, 'The Race to an Agentic Future: How Agentic AI Will Transform Customer Experience,' highlighting the potential of agentic AI to revolutionize the way technology vendors deliver services and support to customers. In the survey of 7,950 global business and technical decision-makers across 30 countries, respondents predict that agentic AI will play an increasingly prominent role in their interactions with technology vendors over the coming years and are positive about the benefits it will bring. 88% report they feel confident that the agentic AI-led customer experience provided by technology partners will help their organization achieve its goals – for example, making their IT environments and operations more efficient, resilient and secure, accelerating their most important strategic IT projects, and maximizing value from their IT investments. Respondents also expect the pivot to agentic AI-led customer experience (including technical support, customer success and professional services) to advance at a far greater velocity than the industry anticipated. They predict that 68% of their customer experience interactions with technology partners will be handled using agentic AI within the next three years. And, surprisingly, they expect more than half (56%) of interactions to be through agentic AI within the next 12 months, representing a significant increase and heaping pressure onto those vendors who are still only in the early stages of thinking about agentic. Liz Centoni, EVP & Chief Customer Experience Officer, Cisco, commented: 'With agentic AI reaching a new level of maturity, we're closer than ever to solving some of the most persistent customer pain points in enterprise environments. For instance, a significant share of network issues stem from misconfiguration, something agentic systems are poised to eliminate. In recent years, in response to growing IT complexity, technology businesses have introduced automation into their workflows and layered in AI to streamline support and services. This approach has still required human intervention to stitch processes together – to monitor, decide, act and adapt. Agentic AI negates the need for this level of human intervention. Agentic AI is a category of artificial intelligence that leverages AI Agents and a contextualized interconnection among them. Agentic AI requires agency, meaning the AI Agents are capable of having memory, are task aware and possess the ability to independently take actions – or choose what actions to take or recommend – to achieve a particular outcome through the ability to learn from their environment and reason, with minimal human oversight. This frees up customer experience professionals to focus on complex problem-solving, humans-on-the-loop feedback process for specific use-cases (where humans, for example, provide feedback to an AI system to improve its performance and focus on accurate and safe results), and building deeper, trusted relationships with customers. The research highlights the urgent need for technology vendors, many of whom are still only exploring the potential for agentic AI deployment within customer experience, to accelerate their strategies. Respondents are clear that they believe vendors who are left behind or fail to deploy agentic AI in an effective, secure and ethical manner, will suffer a deterioration in customer relationships, reputational damage and higher levels of customer churn. Meanwhile, the research highlights that respondents feel that vendors who embrace this transformation head-on, seamlessly and ethically deploying agentic AI across the technology lifecycle, will benefit from data-driven insights, improved scalability within their support and services, and loyalty at scale. Customer experience will become a strategic differentiator, with 81% of respondents predicting that vendors that successfully deliver agentic AI-led customer experience will gain a competitive edge. Key Findings Accelerated demand for customer experience: As levels of IT complexity increase, organizations are leaning on technology vendors more than ever before. 92% of respondents state that the support and services provided by vendors are becoming more critical in the AI era. Use cases across the technology lifecycle: more than 80% of respondents point to potential benefits of agentic AI-led customer experience at every stage of the technology lifecycle, with customer and technical support, technology strategy and planning, and operations viewed as the greatest opportunities. Game-changing benefits: customers expect agentic AI to drive improvements in IT productivity, time savings, and cost savings, as well as opportunities to improve data analytics, troubleshooting, and alignment of technology investment with digital transformation goals. Human connection is irreplaceable: customers want to retain human interaction when engaging with support and services, with 96% stating that human relationships are very important when interacting with B2B technology partners. Robust governance is non-negotiable: 99% of respondents state that it's important for technology partners to demonstrate robust governance arrangements to deliver ethical use of agentic AI, and 81% feel that vendors need to share their vision for AI-led customer experience to bring customers along on the journey. 0 0
