CCTV clip of Brazil robbery falsely linked to Burmese anti-junta fighters

Yahoo23-05-2025

The video of an armed robber stealing a mobile phone and fleeing the scene before being shot by another man has gained 38,000 views after it was shared on Facebook on May 13.
"Said it happened in North Dagon. I am not sure if that's true but they said a PDF saved a foreigner," reads the Burmese-language caption, referring to the People's Defence Force, which was formed after a 2021 coup that has led to four years of conflict, spurring mass displacement and poverty (archived link).
A devastating earthquake that struck in March killed 3,800 people and worsened the humanitarian situation, while the junta has continued to strike civilian targets despite a purported ceasefire to help the country recover from the disaster (archived links here and here).
Similar posts claiming the video of the robbery was shot in Myanmar also emerged on Facebook.
However, a reverse image search on Google using keyframes from the video found the incident took place in Brazil.
Broadcaster CNN Brasil published an uncropped version of the video in a report on March 4 (archived link).
The report's headline reads: "Video: student is robbed as he leaves the gym and off-duty police officer retaliates."
The incident took place in Sao Paulo's Brooklin neighbourhood, on Francisco Dias Velho Road, Brazilian local media reported (archived link).
A search of the location on Google Maps found a geotagged image of the exterior of the Junkyard Gym, which shows elements matching those seen in the CCTV footage of the robbery (archived link).
Further keyword searches found the Junkyard Gym had uploaded additional CCTV footage of the robbery on its official Instagram account, which corresponded to Google Maps street view imagery of Francisco Del Velho Road (archived links here and here).
AFP has previously debunked misinformation related to the PDF here, here and here.

Massachusetts high schooler detained by ICE on way to volleyball practice speaks out following release

Marcelo Gomes da Silva, the 18-year-old Massachusetts high school student who was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on his way to volleyball practice last week, said following his release that he wants to help those still detained in the facility where he was held for nearly a week. "I would have to watch people cry, people with kids," the teen said during a press briefing in Burlington, Massachusetts, on Thursday after a judge granted him bond. "No one deserves to be down there." Gomes da Silva, a Brazilian national who is a junior at Milford Public High School, was arrested on Saturday, according to a court filing from his attorney. He said he wasn't able to shower for six days and would sleep on a concrete floor while being held at a facility in Burlington. The teen said he would share his limited food with the other men detained and often acted as their translator because he speaks English, Portuguese and Spanish. "At the end of the day, this place -- it's not a good spot to be," he said. Gomes da Silva said he would pray and talk to the other inmates about the Bible. "The only thing I could do is thank God every day," he said. Gomes da Silva's arrest sparked an outcry from Massachusetts officials and the Milford community where he has lived since he came to the United States in 2012 at the age of 6. He said he never saw the public support while he was detained and is grateful for it. "We don't have TVs in there," he said. "We don't get to see the daylight." Gomes da Silva, who was driving his father's car at the time of his arrest, was pulled over and detained even though the father was the target of the operation. The father, Joao Paulo Gomes-Pereira, was sought because he "has a habit of reckless driving" at speeds over 100 mph, according to the Department of Homeland Security. He has not been detained. "I heard a lot of people talk bad about my dad, but if you want to talk bad about my dad, then you have to talk bad about me, because he raised me," Gomes da Silva said. "He doesn't deserve any hate, because I was raised from him." Gomes da Silva said his dad would cry on their calls and "has never done anything wrong." "I don't want anyone to touch my dad," he said. "My dad's everything to me," he added. Gomes da Silva was granted $2,000 bond on Thursday after an immigration judge found he is not a danger to the community. Following his release, he said he went to McDonald's and had French fries, chicken nuggets and a Coke. He said he was looking forward to hugging his parents, sister, brother and dog, a mini-poodle. He was greeted by his siblings, parents and classmates once he returned home Thursday evening. Gomes da Silva said he's "optimistic" about his future and wants to help the other men detained. "My dad always taught me to be humble and to put other people first," he said. "I want to do whatever I can to get them as much help as possible." Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton said he and fellow Rep. Jake Auchincloss planned to inspect the Burlington facility where the teen was held. "This administration is not keeping us safe by keeping 18-year-old honor students in prison," Moulton said at the press briefing. "What we see here today -- it's not American. It doesn't represent our values." Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, who had called for the teen's release following his arrest, said in a statement that she is "relieved that Marcelo will be returning home to his parents, siblings, classmates and the Milford community." "Marcelo never should have been arrested or detained, and it certainly did not make us safer," she said. "It's not okay that students across the state are fearful of going to school or sports practice, and that parents have to question whether their children will come home at the end of the day. In Massachusetts, we are going to keep speaking out for what's right and supporting one another in our communities." Gomes da Silva entered the U.S. in 2012 and was on a student visa that has since lapsed, according to his attorney. He has no criminal history and is "eligible for and intends to apply for asylum," his attorney stated in a habeas corpus petition filed Sunday seeking his release. A federal judge issued an emergency order Sunday afternoon directing the government not to remove Gomes da Silva from the U.S. or to transfer him out of the judicial district of Massachusetts for at least 72 hours. On Monday, a federal judge ordered that the government not transfer the teen out of Massachusetts without first providing the court at least 48 hours' advance notice of and reasons for the move. The government was given 14 days to respond. ICE officials defended the arrest during a briefing on Monday. "When we go out into the community and we find others who are unlawfully here, we are going to arrest them," ICE acting Field Director Patricia Hyde said at a press briefing on Monday. "We've been completely transparent with that. He's 18 years old. He's unlawfully in this country."

On-duty cop offers woman ride home, then sexually abuses her, CA officials say

A deputy accused of committing a string of sex crimes while on duty has been convicted, California prosecutors say. A jury found Michael Clark, 36, guilty of a slew of charges, including two counts of sexual battery, two counts of stalking, three counts of assault under color of authority and one count of false imprisonment, the Kern County District Attorney's Office said in a June 4 news release. 'A sworn deputy who made a promise to protect the people of Kern County instead abused that trust and used his position of power to exploit multiple victims,' District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer said in the release. Clark's conviction stems from encounters with multiple women when he was 'acting in an official capacity as a deputy' with the Kern County Sheriff's Office, prosecutors said. The sheriff's office did not immediately respond to McClatchy News' request for comment on June 6. In an October 2019 Facebook post announcing Clark's arrest, deputies said he began working with the sheriff's office in April 2017 and had worked there for two and a half years, mostly recently having worked at the Rosamond Substation. Woman 'inappropriately' touched in search Clark was called to an Oildale home on Feb. 14, 2019 and spoke with a woman who gave a fake last name, prosecutors said. She was arrested, according to prosecutors. During a search, Clark is accused of 'inappropriately' touching the woman, grabbing her 'genital area and her breasts,' prosecutors said. Deputy 'continually' propositions woman About a month later, Clark responded to a Rosamond home to 'take an identity theft report,' prosecutors said. While he was inside the home, Clark asked a woman 'sexually charged questions,' prosecutors said. He returned to the home on multiple occasions and also sent her 'sexually explicit text messages,' prosecutors said. Despite her pleading with him to stop, 'he continually propositioned the woman,' prosecutors said. Clark's actions led the woman to block his phone number and to move out of Rosamond, prosecutors said. GPS data from his patrol vehicle showed he 'visited or drove by the woman's residence over 20 times in a two-month period,' prosecutors said. Deputy gropes grocery store worker during ride home In August 2019, Clark responded to a Rosamond grocery store parking lot about a fight, prosecutors said. Afterward, he visited the store and came across a female worker, prosecutors said. Clark later noticed the same woman as she was walking home after her shift and offered her a ride home, prosecutors said. The woman said she agreed to the ride 'because he was a cop,' according to prosecutors. As he drove the short distance to her home, 'Clark asked her if she wanted to exchange social media accounts to 'sext'' and also 'asked her to 'make out,'' prosecutors said. Upon arriving at her home, Clark 'leaned over to the passenger side and began kissing her,' prosecutors said. 'He then began grabbing her breasts and genital area,' prosecutors said. When the woman opened the car door in an attempt to escape, he grabbed her and didn't let her leave, prosecutors said. 'He then exposed his genitals and forced her hand onto it,' prosecutors said. Clark let the woman leave after she gave him her contact information, according to prosecutors. In the days that followed, the woman said Clark 'began messaging her on social media asking if she would meet with him,' deputies said in a Facebook post. She said Clark continued to frequent her work while he was on duty, asking if 'she wanted to hang out and/or go out for drinks,' deputies said. Woman wakes to find deputy beside her Clark is also accused of harassing multiple workers at a gas station near the sheriff's main station over 'the course of several months,' prosecutors said. He is accused of writing 'lewd comments on receipts' and asking the women on dates, prosecutors said. One worker told investigators 'Clark reached across a gate, touched her buttocks, and walked away laughing,' prosecutors said. Another woman, who reported multiple incidents with Clark, said he once 'entered an area off limits to the public,' prosecutors said. The woman said she was napping and woke to find Clark lying beside her 'eye to eye,' and he told her 'he just wanted 'to cuddle,'' prosecutors said. On another occasion, the woman said she was leaving her car in the parking lot when 'Clark pulled in behind her in his patrol vehicle and activated his overhead lights,' prosecutors said. He 'asked her if she 'wanted to make out,'' then gave 'her his department issued Taser,' prosecutors said. 'Clark's behavior will not be tolerated and he must be held accountable for the harm he has inflicted,' Zimmer said. Clark is scheduled to appear in court for sentencing on July 16 and faces up to eight years and four months in prison, as well as be required to register as a sex offender, prosecutors said. Rosamond is about an 80-mile drive north from Los Angeles.
