Opposition vital to democracy, says Irene Wong in response to SUPP criticism

Borneo Post07-06-2025
Irene Wong
SIBU (June 8): A strong and effective opposition is indispensable in any democratic system of government, said Irene Wong, special assistant to Sibu MP Oscar Ling.
She emphasised that the opposition plays a vital role in monitoring the government, checking its power, proposing alternatives, and voicing the concerns of the people.
'It is precisely because of the opposition that the people's interests are not neglected and the government's power can be kept in check,' she added.
Wong was referring to the recent statement from Sarawak United Peoples' Party's (SUPP) accusing the Democratic Action Party (DAP) of committing the so-called 'Four Major Sins,' for voicing out against the government.
'Monitoring the government and raising questions is not an act of sabotage, but a way to improve governance,' she said.
She stressed that as the largest opposition party in Sarawak, DAP has the responsibility to scrutinise government policies and ensure that the distribution of public resources is fair and transparent.
'The opposition raises questions to ensure that the pursuit of autonomy is not merely rhetorical but delivers real benefits to the people.'
She also referred to a recent issue raised in the Sarawak State Assembly regarding the Sarawak government's RM100 million travel expenses for which a clear explanation has yet to be provided.
'Who exactly is this money spent on, where did it go, what was it used for, and how many people were involved in the trips?' Wong asked.
'The people have a right to know the details of such a massive expenditure.'
At the same time, basic infrastructure development in rural areas remains slow, she said, adding some areas even experienced low water pressure during festive periods, indicating an imbalance in resource allocation.
'If the government is clean and accountable, why fear public questions? If SUPP truly serves the people, it should welcome oversight rather than smear those who ask questions.' checks and balances dap Irene Wong lead opposition

SUPP man slams Rafizi over remarks on Sarawak's oil rights

Lau expresses disappointment over Rafizi's remarks, which implied that Sarawak's pursuit would burden the nation with more debts due to reduced contributions from Petronas. – Photo by Peter Boon SIBU (Aug 7): As Sarawak continues its pursuit of oil and gas rights from the federal government, former Economy Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Rafizi Ramli is 'painting a narrative that creates distrust between two sides', said Councillor Kevin Lau. The Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Youth chief expressed disappointment over Rafizi's remarks, which implied that Sarawak's pursuit would burden the nation with more debts due to reduced contributions from Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas). 'Sarawak is only asking for her rights, and to be respected as one of the founding partners of Malaysia,' Lau said in a statement yesterday. He called on Rafizi to show greater sincerity in resolving the issue, in line with the true spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), rather than 'blindly defending Petronas'. 'Pursuing our rights is never about putting the nation at risk. It is about ensuring Sarawak is equally developed – something we have been left out of for many years.' Lau said he was particularly disheartened by Rafizi's narrative, especially given his reputation as a strategist and a brilliant mind. 'To hear him singing this tune is very disconcerting. As our Premier has said many times: when Sarawak is strong, Malaysia is strong. Sarawak will play its role to strengthen the nation.' He also criticised the lack of equitable distribution of national resources, despite Rafizi acknowledging that Sarawak is rich in oil and gas. 'The best example is how long it took for Sarawak to have a highway like the Pan Borneo. And let's be frank, the Pan Borneo Highway still has a long way to go compared to highways in Peninsular Malaysia,' he added. Lau reminded federal leaders that the issue of reclaiming Sarawak's rights resonates strongly with Sarawakians, who have long felt neglected. He thus called for greater understanding, saying: 'While the South China Sea divides us, there is no reason politicians from Peninsular Malaysia cannot embrace Sarawak with an open mind and heart.' DAP Kuching offers help for small retailers to join Kedai MyKasih under SARA aid programme

Lam (right) and Chong hold up Sara posters. KUCHING (Aug 7): The Democratic Action Party (DAP) Kuching office is offering to assist small and medium-sized supermarkets and grocery stores to register as Kedai MyKasih partner merchants under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme. Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii said the initiative aimed to ensure more small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can benefit from the Madani government's people-centric policies by expanding the programme's access across local communities. He said while the Sara aid has been running smoothly, many smaller retailers have yet to register despite showing interest in the programme. 'The Sara assistance is a vital support system provided by the government for low-income households. Beneficiary families can use their MyKad to purchase basic necessities at participating merchants,' he said in a statement yesterday. He encouraged more retailers to seize the opportunity and join the initiative, and said retailers who register successfully will be provided with the necessary system support to operate under the scheme. 'Upon successful registration, retailers will receive a free POS system and barcode scanner. During checkout, customers simply need to present their MyKad. 'The system will then read their information, scan the purchased items, and the POS will print a receipt for record-keeping,' he said. Dr Yii added that payments to participating retailers would be handled efficiently. 'The relevant government departments will also credit the retailers' total sales directly into their bank accounts twice a week, ensuring smooth and secure transactions.' Dr Yii also highlighted the programme not only helps needy families, but also brings additional customers and revenue to small businesses, which is a win-win policy for everyone. 'We encourage small and medium-sized supermarkets and grocery stores in Kuching to actively participate in this initiative,' he added. Retailers interested in registering as Kedai MyKasih partner merchants may visit the DAP Kuching Service Centre or contact Dr Yii's special assistants George Lam at 0112-5181872 and Lesley Chong at 019-8567887. Court of Appeal rules EC's Covid-19 voter ban unlawful

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal today ruled that the Election Commission's (EC) decision to bar a registered voter from casting his ballot in the 2022 Johor state election due to Covid-19 quarantine restrictions was unlawful. A three-member bench comprising Justices Datuk Supang Lian, Datuk Wong Kian Kheong, and Datuk Ismail Brahim held that the EC had violated R.K. Tamileswaaran's constitutional right to vote under Article 119 of the Federal Constitution by preventing him from exercising his right to vote. 'The first respondent (EC) had committed an 'error of law' or an illegality in this case by denying the appellant's (Tamileswaaran's) right to vote in the election,' he said. In delivering the court's unanimous decision, Justice Wong said the High Court had erred in ruling that the EC's duty under Article 113 of the Federal Constitution to conduct elections was subject to the Covid-19 prevention SOP and the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (PCDA). 'The SOP and PCDA cannot restrain the EC's duty to conduct elections,' he said. Justice Wong issued a certiorari order to quash the EC's decision, and granted several declarations sought by Tamileswaaran. The court allowed Tamileswaaaran's appeal to overturn the Dec 7, 2022, decision by the High Court in dismissing his judicial review. The court did not make any orders as to costs. While acknowledging that courts have the discretion to award monetary compensation for breach of the right to vote, Justice Wong said no constitutional compensation would be granted in this case. He said this was because the EC's decision was made based on the SOP in the interest of public health and safety, and its officers had acted in good faith in this case. In the judgment, Justice Wong held that the SOP and the PCDA regulations created by the Director-General of Health and the Minister of Health, respectively, are subsidiary legislation and not Federal law or an Act of Parliament. The court also dismissed arguments submitted by the EC and the government, represented by senior federal counsel Mohammad Al-Saifi Hashim and Fauziah Daud, that public policy considerations on public health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic were sufficient grounds to dismiss the judicial review. ' A voter's right to vote is a constitutional right and not a statutory right,' added Justice Wong. In his judicial review application, R.K. Tamileswaaran claimed that he was on the sixth day of his Covid-19 quarantine and had tested negative on a self-administered test. He stated that he was barred from entering the polling station because his MySejahtera application displayed a high-risk status, and he had not obtained permission from the district health officer to vote. The court's decision was delivered via online proceedings. Tamileswaaran was represented by lawyers New Sin Yew and Nur Izni Syazwani Ahmad. - Bernama
