Braves Catcher Listed As Best Available By MLB Insider As Deadline Nears
The Atlanta Braves are falling well out of playoff contention, and they are looking to get back to October next year at the trade deadline. In the meantime, they are looking to move expendable assets while holding on to multi-year players, but MLB.com's Mark Feinsand has their catcher Sean Murphy as the best catcher at the deadline, despite his long-term contract.

Photo byMurphy is one of the best offensive catchers in the game and has a Gold Glove along with it. With 16 home runs and a 133 OPS+, and a contract through 2029, Murphy would not only take the reins behind the dish this season, but he would be the catcher of the future.
The Braves are focusing on returning to the playoffs next year and are set on keeping their controllable players, but everyone could be available at the right price. Thanks to the emergence of Drake Baldwin, the Braves have a pair of catchers who both demand playing time with their performance alone. The Braves could be comfortable letting one go.
This could be a decision the Braves make after the season ends to allow themselves to confirm what they are seeing from Baldwin and that he is ready to take on the full workload of a starting catcher.
If the Braves make the call to ship off Murphy, the Padres are an attractive candidate with their major league assets they could bring back in return for the backstop. The Padres need a catcher, and the Braves could take advantage of their surplus.

Braves trade for Cardinals P Erick Fedde to address decimated pitching staff ahead of deadline
A 44-60 start hasn't swayed the Atlanta Braves from buying ahead of MLB's trade deadline. The Braves announced on Sunday that they've acquired right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The move addresses pitching depth for a starting rotation that's been decimated by injury. At the time of Sunday's trade, Chris Sale (rib fracture), Reynaldo López (shoulder inflammation), Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow fracture), Grant Holmes (elbow inflammation) and AJ Smith-Shawver (UCL tear) were all on the 60-day injured list. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Smith-Shawver underwent Tommy John surgery, and his season is over. The Braves moved Holmes to the 60-day IL to make room on the roster for Fedde. Fedde, 32, is in his eighth MLB season. He's started 20 games for the Cardinals in 2025 with a 5.22 ERA and 1.505 WHIP. He's not a high-end starter, but he is a starting pitcher, which the Braves are in desperate need of with the bulk of their rotation facing long-term injuries. The Braves entered Sunday in fourth place in the NL East, 16.5 games behind the first-place New York Mets. They were 12 games behind the San Diego Padres for the final wild-card berth in the National League. Their playoff hopes are grim. But the Braves need to field pitchers for the remainder of the season, and the acquisition of Fedde addresses that need.

Braves acquire Erick Fedde from Cardinals to reinforce pitching staff
ATLANTA – With the Atlanta Braves' entire Opening Day starting rotation currently on the injured list, they traded for Erick Fedde from the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday to likely fill one of the vacancies for the rest of the season. The Braves didn't give up anything in the trade for the veteran right-hander, and the Cardinals are sending cash to help cover part of the approximate $2.5 million remaining on his contract. The Cardinals had designated him for assignment last week. The #Braves today acquired RHP Erick Fedde and cash considerations from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. To make room on the 40-man roster, Atlanta transferred RHP Grant Holmes to the 60-day injured list. — Atlanta Braves (@Braves) July 27, 2025 Fedde, 32, is 3-10 with a 5.22 ERA in 20 starts, with just 63 strikeouts and 47 walks, along with 14 homers allowed, in 101 2/3 innings. He's been particularly ineffective in recent starts, going 0-4 with an alarming 13.25 ERA in his last five starts before the DFA. Atlanta placed Grant Holmes on the 15-day IL after he felt tightness in his elbow during Saturday's start, then transferred him to the 60-day IL Sunday, meaning his season is over and he'll consult with doctors about findings from initial tests. Advertisement The Braves already had all other members of their season-opening rotation on the 60-day IL: Chris Sale (rib cage fracture), Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow), Reynaldo López (shoulder surgery) and A.J. Smith-Shawver (Tommy John surgery). Sale could pitch again this season, but Smith-Shawver will not and it's uncertain whether Schwellenbach or López will. Provided Atlanta can help reduce the amount of hard contact, Fedde is built to provide rotation depth. The Cardinals originally acquired Fedde from the Chicago White Sox in eight-player deal that also saw Tommy Edman and Michael Kopech join the Los Angeles Dodgers during last year's deadline.

Braves star Spencer Schwellenbach placed on IL due to fractured right elbow as team's disaster season gets worse
The Atlanta Braves' disappointing season has taken another turn for the worse. Pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach was placed on the injured list due to a fractured right elbow, the team announced Wednesday. The Braves took an odd route when announcing the move, burying it in a lengthy press release that highlighted three other transactions, including the return of outfielder Jurickson Profar from a PED suspension. At the end of the release, the team revealed Schwellenbach's injury but did not provide any additional details. Schwellenbach didn't appear to shows signs of injury in his last start, in which he struck out 12 over seven innings on June 28. Schwellenbach apparently felt the injury the day after that start, per David O'Brien of The Athletic. He won't throw for four weeks as he recovers. The team hopes he'll be able to return by September. The injury puts a damper on a fantastic start to the season for the 25-year-old. Over 110 2/3 innings — which ranks third among National League pitchers — Schwellenbach has a 3.09 ERA. He has racked up 108 strikeouts and a 2.2 fWAR and had a shot to receive Cy Young votes if he continued to pitch well the rest of the way. The injury comes at a tough time for the Braves, who lost eight-time All-Star pitcher Chris Sale to a rib fracture in June. The team also lost starters AJ Smith-Shawver and Reynaldo Lopez earlier this season, which significantly weakened Atlanta's pitching depth. In addition to injuries on the pitching side, the team started the year without superstar Ronald Acuña Jr., who was recovering from an ACL injury. The Braves also dealt with an injury to catcher Sean Murphy and Profar's PED suspension, leaving them without multiple starters for stretches at the beginning of the season. Entering play Wednesday, Atlanta had a 38-46 record, good for fourth in the National League East. The team faces a tough road ahead if it hopes to recover and make the playoffs.
