New Delhi: Move over, airplanes — Beijing has successfully tested magnetic levitation (Maglev) technology, with the potential to make trains even faster than jets. According to the reports, Maglev technology trains will be able to cover 1,200km distance in just 150 minutes. The South China Morning Post reported that the superfast Maglev, travelling the 1,200km distance between Beijing and Shanghai, could slash the present travel time of 5.5 hours by high-speed rail to as little as 2.5 hours.If magnetic levitation (Maglev) technology is introduced in India, the journey between Delhi and Kolkata could take less than 2.5 hours.

The ministry this week also imposed export controls on the movement of high-performance chips of U.S. origin. Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said the move was aimed at preventing the misuse of technology and ensure Malaysia remained in compliance with international standards and obligations. "We want to prevent the misuse of divergent, sensitive technology, such as AI chips," he told a press conference. "And most importantly for our industries and economy, we want to avoid secondary sanctions." Export controls on chips were one of the concerns raised by the United States in its talks with Malaysia over tariffs imposed on the country's goods, Tengku Zafrul said. Malaysia faces a 25% tariff on its exports to the United States, unless it can reach a trade deal with Washington before August 1. Tengku Zafrul expressed concern over the tariff rate, and said several sticking points remained in the negotiations, declining to provide details due to the sensitivity of the matter. "We can't agree to terms when the tariff rate is still high because we don't know what the terms are," he said. Regardless of the tariffs, Malaysia remained on track to meet its economic growth target of 4.5%-5.5% for the year, while the ministry will look to achieve its trade target of 5% growth in 2025, Tengku Zafrul said.

BEIJING: US tech giant Nvidia said on Tuesday it will resume sales of its H20 artificial intelligence chips to China, after Washington pledged to remove licensing curbs that had put a stop to exports. The California-based firm produces some of the world's most advanced semiconductors but is not allowed to ship its most cutting-edge chips to China owing to concerns that Beijing could use them to boost its military capabilities. It developed the H20 -- a less powerful version of its AI processing units -- specifically for export to China, although that plan hit the skids when the Trump administration firmed up export licence requirements in April. The company said in a statement on Tuesday that it was "filing applications to sell the Nvidia H20 GPU again". "The US government has assured Nvidia that licences will be granted, and Nvidia hopes to start deliveries soon," the statement said. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in a video published by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV on Tuesday that "the US government has approved for us (to file) licences to start shipping H20s, and so we will start to sell H20s to the Chinese market". "I'm looking forward to shipping H20s very soon, and so I'm very happy with that very, very good news," Huang, wearing his trademark black leather jacket, told a group of reporters. Zhang Guobin, founder of the Chinese specialist website said the resumption would "bring (Nvidia) substantial revenue growth, making up for the losses caused by the previous ban". It would also ease the impact of trade frictions on the global supply chain for semiconductors, he told AFP. But he said Chinese firms would remain focused on domestic chip development, adding that "the Trump administration has been... prone to abrupt policy shifts, making it difficult to gauge how long such an opening might endure". Shares of Las Vegas-based MP Materials jumped 10 per cent to $52.37 in premarket trading. Apple said the MP investment is part of its $500 billion commitment to the United States. The agreement includes plans for Apple to purchase US-made rare earth magnets from MP Materials' Texas facility. It would be the first supply deal for MP's magnets since the financial backstop agreement with Washington. MP already produces mined and processed rare earths and has said it expects to start commercial magnet production in Texas facility by the end of this year. The two companies would build another factory in Texas to produce magnets and a new recycling facility in Mountain Pass, California, near the company's existing mine.
