Malaysia's trade slips slightly to RM234.85bil in June, surplus rebounds sharply

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's trade performance in June 2025 saw a slight decline of 1.2 per cent, amounting to RM234.85 billion compared to the same month in 2024.
The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry said exports fell by 3.5 per cent to RM121.72 billion, while imports increased by 1.2 per cent to RM113.13 billion.
The ministry said the drop in exports was mainly due to weaker shipments of manufactured and mining goods, especially petroleum products, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and crude petroleum.
"This contraction was partly cushioned by continued strength in exports of palm oil and palm oil-based agricultural products, which posted double-digit growth in June 2025, extending its growth streak to 15 consecutive months.
"This was also supported by increased exports of machinery, equipment and parts as well as electrical and electronics (E&E) products," it said in a statement.
MITI stated that the increase in exports of electrical and electronics products aligns with the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics forecast of an 11.2 per cent growth in global semiconductor sales for 2025.
The ministry said Malaysia's trade surplus saw a strong rebound in June 2025, rising to RM8.59 billion from RM759.9 million in May 2025.
"This marked the 62nd consecutive month of surplus since May 2020, reflecting continued resilience in Malaysia's external trade position," it adds.
In the first half of 2025, Malaysia's trade performance remained firm, marking the highest cumulative value ever recorded for trade, exports, and imports.
Total trade rose by 4.8 per cent to RM1.46 trillion, with exports increasing by 3.8 per cent to RM760.2 billion and imports growing by 5.9 per cent to RM704.67 billion.
According to MITI, trade surplus in the first half of 2025 stood at RM55.53 billion.
MITI said in June 2025, exports to key trading partners such as the United States, the European Union, and Taiwan recorded growth.
The ministry added that exports to Mexico also rose, mainly supported by higher shipments of E&E products.
"In terms of the US tariff measures, Malaysia remains committed to continuing engagement to achieve a balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade arrangement.
"MITI and the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation are also intensifying efforts to build a more resilient trade ecosystem," it said.
MITI said these efforts involve diversifying export markets and enhancing trade relationships through free trade agreements, with the aim of broadening Malaysia's trading network and building a more resilient economy against external uncertainties.

Tengku Zafrul now a full-fledged PKR member

OSAKA: Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz is now officially a PKR member. The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister confirmed that the party had accepted his membership application. He is now a member of Ampang PKR division. 'I can confirm that I applied (to join) the party and I informed the secretary-general on the matter,' he said when met by the Malaysian media at the Malaysia Pavilion in World Expo 2025. Asked if his membership application has been accepted, Tengku Zafrul answered in the affirmative. 'Yes,' he said, adding that his membership was approved following the party's leadership council meeting about two weeks ago. In May, Tengku Zafrul submitted his resignation letter as an Umno supreme council member, Kota Raja division chief and as a party member. He then said he would begin the application process of being a PKR member and had expressed the intention to PKR president, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Tengku Zafrul's departure from Umno comes just days after two PKR stalwarts – Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad – resigned as Economy Minister and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, respectively. Rafizi lost his deputy presidency in the PKR party elections while Nik Nazmi lost his position as vice-president. Tengku Zafrul quit as Selangor Umno treasurer in April last year. Speculation has been rife since late last year that he would leave the party to join PKR.

Storm clouds over trade

Malaysia on display: Tengku Zafrul (in green) with Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hasan (third from right) looking at the Smart City model at the Malaysia Pavilion, World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. OSAKA: While the tariffs set by the United States may not trigger a recession, they are nonetheless expected to cause lower growth globally, says Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. On weathering the tariff imposed on Malaysia, the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said the country remains competitive compared to regional peers. However, he noted that given the scale of the US economy, representing nearly 30% of global gross domestic product (GDP), any slowdown will have far-reaching consequences. 'Some countries might get hit harder than others, depending on how open their economies are, and how big a trading partner the United States is to them,' said Tengku Zafrul, who added that trade with the US accounts for around 15% of Malaysia's exports. 'Our trade with other markets is 85%. Having said that, the United States is our largest export market, exporting close to RM200bil in 2024,' he told reporters after visiting the Malaysia Pavilion at the World Expo 2025 here yesterday. Tengku Zafrul said Malaysia is already forecasting a lower growth rate for the year, pointing to Bank Negara's new GDP growth forecast. On July 29, the central bank announced a growth forecast of 4% to 4.8% for Malaysia, a downgrade from the previous projection of 4.5% to 5.5% growth rate. Tengku Zafrul said another concern would be on whether the tariffs would affect demand for goods. 'As the price goes up, and if suppliers or producers cannot absorb the increase, they will have to pass to the buyers. 'And when you pass to the consumers, can they afford it? Or maybe they can, but they will not buy as much. This is the knock-on effect on the economy,' he said. On a possible tax to be imposed on Malaysia's semiconductor exports to the US, Tengku Zafrul said his ministry had checked with its counterpart, and no formal decision has been made, with investigations under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act against certain Malaysian companies still ongoing. 'There is no executive order signed by the President (Donald Trump). What we have heard so far is just the statement he made during his meeting with the CEO of Apple (Tim Cook),' he said. Trump had said he planned to impose 100% tariffs on tens of billions of dollars of imported semiconductors used in consumer electronics and other products. However, he also indicated he would not hit companies that commit to making chips in the United States with this form of tariff. The Trade Expansion Act allows Trump to impose tariffs or other import restrictions if a product is found to threaten US security. On another matter, Tengku Zafrul said he has to clarify Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's criticisms of Malaysia's recent trade agreement with the United States, not as an act of hitting back at the former prime minister, but to provide a factual account of the matter. 'Perhaps he (Dr Mahathir) got the facts from wrong sources. So I took the liberty to correct it,' he said. Dr Mahathir, among others, had claimed that Malaysia was removing all taxes from 11,000 US products in return for the reduction in US tariffs imposed on Malaysia. Tengku Zafrul explained on social media that only 60.4% of the tariff lines will be zero-rated, and not 100% as Dr Mahathir claimed. The former prime minister also questioned a supposed commitment by Malaysia to supply unprocessed rare earth to the US at a low return. To this, Tengku Zafrul said that whether it is rare earth or other strategic minerals, there is no exclusive agreement to sell directly to any country, adding that Malaysia's current policy mandates that rare earths must be processed domestically before being exported. 'In this world of misinformation, it is important that we put our version out there, which in this case, is the truth,' he said.
