At its launch back in 2017, the MG5 was the only electric estate available on these shores. Come mid-2025 and it's now been relegated to the classifieds – but that doesn't make it a bad buy mind. Especially if you can stretch to a mid-life facelift example, which arrived in 2022. Where its predecessor was a rather bland-looking thing, the updated 5 was a completely different prospect entirely, with its sharp face, LED lights front and rear and suave cabin. It also supported vehicle to load capability, enabling you to power anything from a coolbox to a coffee machine. While early versions can be picked up from as little as £5k, later models start from around £12.5k, and many will still be within their seven-year warranty. Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo You might like
Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo Got your eye on a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, but want slightly less of the Audi Allroad treatment? The Taycan Sport Turismo, which sees the ride height slightly lowered and the plastic body cladding prised off, could be your answer. Post facelift you now get an 89kWh battery in the entry-level Sport Turismo, while a 402bhp electric motor drives the rear wheels for a 0-62mph time of 4.8 seconds and a range of 352 miles on a single charge. There's 270kW DC rapid charging too. Want more speed? The Turbo S now has a bonkers 939bhp and does 0-62mph in 2.4 seconds, but the proper driver's Sport Turismo may be the mid-range GTS. Peugeot's design team are on a roll of late, and the third generation 308 and 308 SW are no exception. Originally available with petrol and diesel engines only, Peugeot has since rolled out hybrid and fully electric powertrains to both the hatchback and estate. Result. The e-308 SW (short for Sports Wagon, FYI) gets a 154bhp electric motor mated to a 54kWh battery for up 254 miles of range (and a best-in-class efficiency of 4.93 miles per kW, it claims), with 100kW fast charging allowing for a 20-80 per cent top-up in 25 minutes, if you can find a plug capable of those speeds. Inside you get Peugeot's smart looking i-Cockpit, while boot capacity is 548 litres with the rear seats up, and 1,574 litres up to the roof with the rear seats down. Vauxhall Astra Electric Sports Tourer We're big fans of the Vauxhall Astra Electric – great looks, decent to drive and low running costs – so a longer, more spacious, bigger booted variant was always going to appeal to our better nature too. And lo, meet the Vauxhall Astra Electric Sports Tourer. Doesn't roll off the tongue quite so easily, does it? Still, it shares the same 154bhp electric motor, 54kWh battery, 254ish-mile range as the Peugeot e-308 SW – yep, plenty of Stellantis cross platform sharing going on here – but gets a slightly more mature suit. It gets a slightly smaller boot compared to the Peugeot though, with 516 litres seats up and 1,553 seats down. Is a little bit plain too. Click here to read the full review
At the BMW Group's annual conference in March 2023, boss Oliver Zipse confirmed what we've known about estate cars for years. 'The BMW 5 Series Touring is very popular,' he said. 'From spring 2024 it will also come in an all-electric version, giving us a truly unique selling point in this segment.' And he was true to his word. The BMW i5 Touring is available in two iterations, the entry-level i5 eDrive40 (rear-wheel drive, 335bhp, 295lb ft) which offers up to 348 miles of range from its 81kWh battery pack, and the range-topping i5 M60 (all-wheel drive, 593bhp, 586lb ft), capable of the 0-62mph sprint in 3.9secs, but a slightly reduced 314 miles range from its identical sized battery. When the A6 e-tron concept broke cover back in April 2021, we were suitably impressed but also secretly crossing our fingers and toes hoping for an Avant version. Estates are both better looking and far more practical than saloons, of course. A year later Audi revealed the A6 Avant e-tron concept - suitably futuristic without being OTT. Thankfully the production car looks remarkably similar to that original design. It's based on the new PPE platform that's shared with Porsche and you can even have an S6 Avant with 543bhp. Back in 2019, Volkswagen previewed its ID.Space Vizzion concept – a stylish, futuristic, fantastic looking fully electric estate – at the Los Angeles Motor Show – before it all went very quiet. A little too quiet for our liking. Then, in early 2023, VW revealed its ID.7 saloon (which you can read about by clicking these blue words), before confirming that an estate (Tourer) version would follow. A year later it finally arrived – hurrah! – and now you can have it in all-wheel drive GTX form with 335bhp and a 0-62mph time of 5.5 seconds. Click here to read the full review
Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake Merc shouts loud and proud that this CLA Shooting Brake is its first electric 'estate'... even if Shooting Brakes aren't technically estates and this technically isn't a Shooting Brake. But let's not get into all that here and now. Instead know this: this is the only way you'll get to an electric estate wearing the three-pointed star on the front. Two versions will be available on our shores: the rear-drive 250+ (268bhp/85kWh battery/473 miles of range) and the all-wheel drive 350+ 4MATIC (439bhp/85kWh battery/454 miles of range). If there's one thing better than an A6 e-tron, it's an RS6 e-tron. While details are few and far between at time of writing, that hasn't stopped us dreaming.
We do at least have some clues on the design, with Audi design boss Marc Lichte telling TG the RS6 will have a wider track and bigger wheels to set it apart from the A6 e-tron. Nothing out of the ordinary there – the current combustion-engined RS6 is the angriest looking to date.
Expect the upcoming electric RS6 to smash the S6 e-tron's 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds. Supercar performance in a practical package. Nice.

Laurent Mekies makes Christian Horner admission in first Red Bull press conference
New Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies admitted he does not know why Christian Horner was relieved of his duties a fortnight ago. French engineer Mekies, previously team principal at Red Bull's sister F1 team Racing Bulls, has taken over from Horner and is at the helm this weekend for the Belgian Grand Prix. Mekies previously enjoyed a near-decade stint at Toro Rosso, the old name for Red Bull's sister team, and also has experience to his name at Ferrari and the FIA. Yet a brief Red Bull statement announcing Horner's departure did not spell out the specific reason why the Briton lost his job, with drivers Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda also unable to give a clear cause on Thursday. When asked if Red Bull bosses Oliver Mintzlaff and Helmut Marko have informed him why he was replacing Horner, Mekies responded: 'The short answer is no they haven't. We didn't get into the why or why now.' Speaking for the first time in an FIA press conference setting on Friday at Spa-Francorchamps, Mekies revealed that he has been in contact with Horner and paid tribute to his work over 20 years at Red Bull Racing. 'Yes we have spoken, he has been nothing other than supportive,' the 48-year-old said. 'Even this morning and yesterday, we texted. It's very impressive in the context. 'I got a call from Oliver and Helmut a few hours before [the announcement]. They asked me if I was interested, it came out of the blue. It was difficult to digest. 'My first thoughts go to Christian, it's not something I could have expected. He has been extremely supportive with me in these last two years, he brought me back to the Red Bull family. 'That's the mix of emotions you get but the dominant one is Red Bull calling. It's a matter of loyalty to the brand.' The future of Red Bull's star driver, four-time world champion Verstappen, has been shrouded in speculation in recent months, with Mercedes lurking in the background. Mekies did not comment directly on the Dutchman's future but acknowledged that his driver's ambitions for the team this season are simple. 'Max wants a fast car,' he said. 'If we get him a fast car, it cancels out all the other stuff. It's about building the next step of competitiveness and, hence, to make it an easy call for Max. 'All I've been seeing in these two weeks is incredible talent and racing spirit at the team. These guys go to the edge, there's not a single department which is lying back. They are really at war, if I may say, in every single aspect.' Verstappen was second-fastest in the one and only practice session on Friday, with McLaren's championship leader Oscar Piastri topping the timesheet, ahead of sprint qualifying later this afternoon.

It has been dubbed 'Britain's most confusing junction', thanks to its complex system of mini–roundabouts. But while many drivers struggle to navigate their way around Swindon's Magic Roundabout, the junction proved to be light work for a self–driving car. To put its Full Self Driving (FSD) mode to the test, Tesla sent a Model 3 through the complex intersection. Footage shows the car expertly navigating the roundabout – not just once, but three times – as cars continuously join from seemingly every direction. Fans have flocked to X to discuss the feat, with one calling it 'superb'. 'If I'm ever in the UK for any reason, I'm definitely letting FSD do whatever the hell that mess is I just watched,' one user wrote. Another said: 'Holy moly, I probably would have had a crash already!' And one joked: 'Not just a roundabout — a rite of passage for autonomous driving.' Hyundai slashes prices across its entire EV range
Hyundai is the latest manufacturer to respond to the Government's convoluted Electric Car Grant by slashing prices on all its electric models – even those that definitely won't be eligible for any subsidies. Aligning with the official bands, Hyundai has cut the price of the baby Inster by £3,750, which means it now kicks off from under £20,000, while the rest of the brand's electric line-up – the Kona Electric, Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 and Ioniq 9 – all drop by £1,500. That includes the high-performance Ioniq 5 N, and is despite only the Kona being under the Government's £37,000 threshold for grant eligibility. Environmental conditions around the grant application make it harder for Asian brands to qualify, although more detail will emerge in the coming days and weeks on which manufacturers are included.
