All the fun of the fair from Calderwood Primary School Parent Council

Daily Record22-05-2025
A terrific afternoon raised thousands for the school, and there was a special video message from former pupil and TV presenter Sally Magnusson.
Calderwood Primary School Parent Council brought all the fun of the retro fair to the local community on Saturday.
And it was also an extra-special one as the school – which recently received a glowing report following an inspection in January – was also celebrating its 75th anniversary.

Visitors to the fair enjoyed some fun in the sun with attractions that included fairground games, circus skills, Animal Man's mini-zoo and a silent disco.

Ex-Calderwoodies were reunited for the anniversary celebrations which included a video message from well-known Scottish broadcast journalist and TV presenter Sally Magnusson. She is a former pupil of the school who lived on Calderwood Road with parents Magnus Magnusson and Mamie Baird.
A 75th birthday celebration cake was also cut by some original pupils that attended the school in the 1950s and a time capsule was buried in the garden with specially-selected items from current pupils in each class.
Ex-pupils of the Rutherglen school also had a chance to wander down memory lane through a corridor of photo memories and memorabilia that were lovingly curated by the staff. The fundraising event generated a whopping £9147 pure profit – the most the school has ever made at a summer fair. These funds will ensure every child enjoys a school trip, free fun events and additional school resources.
Elaine Miller, chair of Calderwood Primary School's parent council said; 'The sun shone in more ways than one on Saturday. What an incredible day and a fantastic amount of funds raised in three hours.
'With local council cuts these funds are even more vital. They enable each child to have at least one school trip a year and allow us to deliver free fun events for our children in recognition of the cost of living for families.

'We have also funded some essential school resources like books and overhead projectors in the absence of local council funding. This event could not have been achieved without a tremendous team effort.
'A huge thank you to all our parent volunteers, school staff, pupils and Calderwood community for coming along and supporting the school.'

Oasis gig at Murrayfield 'more ground-shaking' than 2009 performance

Oasis gave an even more ground-shaking performance at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium than their 2009 show when they played there this month, according to analysis of seismic data. The Gallagher brothers' last Scottish gig 16 years ago had topped the chart for the most powerful seismic concert at the venue in the last 20 years, the British Geological Survey (BGS) said. But their shows at the stadium on August 8, 9 and 12 proved even more ground-shaking, particularly while the crowd danced to the song Cigarettes And Alcohol. The crowd on Tuesday generated the highest peak power reading of 261KW, followed by Friday (206KW) and Saturday (160KW). Callum Harrison, BGS Seismologist, said: 'The data showed that Tuesday's audience generated the highest peak power reading. 'It is difficult to determine exactly why, it could be that the dancing on that evening was a bit more synchronised and energetic. 'What the data does appear to show, is that the excitement of Oasis fans remains as strong as ever.' The band played three sold-out shows at Murrayfield, with an estimated 70,000 people packed in to hear them each night. BSG said: 'The peak power reading on each night was registered around 8.40pm whilst the crowd was dancing to Cigarettes And Alcohol. 'The energy detected by the seismic monitoring stations is driven by the movement of the crowd jumping and dancing in time to the music, rather than the volume of the concert, with bigger, more energetic crowds generating larger signal.' The peak power recorded at the Oasis gig in June 2009 was 215.06KW, beating the Red Hot Chili Peppers in June 2004, Kings of Leon in June 2011 and Taylor Swift in June last year. The BGS keeps an archive of continuous ground motion recordings from seismic sensors around the country, dating back several decades. The organisation is the national body responsible for recording earthquakes, operating a network of monitoring stations around the country. Liam Gallagher 'misinformed' over comments about Oasis fans, says council leader

The leader of Edinburgh Council has said Liam Gallagher was misinformed over comments made by council officers about Oasis fans. The frontman made several references to the supposed jibes during the band's sold-out shows at Murrayfield Stadium. Prior to the gigs, it was reported that council bosses had described expectant crowds as 'rowdy', 'middle-aged men' who 'take up more room' and would drink to 'medium to high intoxication'. Liam Gallagher responded to the reports on stage on Tuesday, saying: '£3bn we've brought into this city over the past five days. And that's between you and us. Three billion f****** quid. 'You won't see f*** all, because they'll rob it and spread it among their posh ugly mates.' At Friday's gig, the singer demanded an apology while calling the council 'f***** slags'. It is estimated that the band could bring in £150m to the economy, and analytics already show the concerts created a huge boost in footfall. STV News Edinburgh Council leader Speaking to STV News after the run of Scottish gigs wrapped up, council leader Jane Meagher said the comments were never made. 'I'm not surprised that Liam was angry based on what he read, but let's be absolutely clear, these things were not said, and they were not said by council officers in any preparatory meeting that happened. 'I'm desperately keen to smooth things over. 'If anybody wants to check it out [the report], it's available on the council website for all to find out. 'This came from one of the planning meetings and one of the considerations, for example, was levels of intoxication for maintaining public order. 'Nobody talked about drunk fans, nobody talked about that.' Ms Meagher also added that, contrary to what the Oasis frontman claimed, the local authority would not see 'much' of the money the events brought into the city. She added: 'It's been a fantastically successful event and we're very pleased about the effect it's had on the city's economy, which of course is fantastic. 'Sadly, not much of that, if not any, comes directly into the pocket of the council, but we're really pleased that the city is thriving in the way that these sorts of events contribute to.' Around 210,000 fans were expected to descend on the city across the three days with extra train, tram and bus services in place to accommodate gig-goers. Only six arrests were made across the three dates, including three on Friday and another three on Tuesday. The council leader added: 'I've had reports of smooth running over the three nights. That's not just about the meticulous planning but is a tribute to the fans that they behaved incredibly well. 'Having experienced Oasis here and the excitement, I would absolutely love it if they come back to Edinburgh and they would be extremely welcome.'
