Anurag Kashyap on T-Series underpaying his films' music: They don't get good music

India Today14-07-2025
Director Anurag Kashyap recently recalled being underpaid for the music of his films-'Dev D' (2009) and 'Gangs of Wasseypur' (2012). He blamed Bhushan Kumar's T-Series for undervaluing quality.Kashyap, in an interview with The Juggernaut, stated that music labels often pay for films considering star value. He said, "The idea is not to cater to the market. If T-Series, Bhushan Kumar, is not buying it, then it is good music. T-Series doesn't buy good music at a good price (sic)."advertisementThe director further said, "They paid very less for 'Dev D', 'Gangs of Wasseypur' or 'Gulaal'. They only pay for who is the star in it. They don't pay for the quality of music (sic)."
"They paid nothing for 'Dev D' music. Ask the producers, UTV studios... they don't understand what's good music. They will only pay for a certain kind of music and only push for that," Kashyap went on."The highest amount of money they paid for any of my movies is 'Bombay Velvet' (2015). As music it was very good but it worked the least for them. Because nobody wanted to listen to jazz. They paid the highest price for that and not 'Dev D' or 'Gangs of Wasseypur'," he added.Bhushan Kumar or T-Series has not yet responded to the 'Gangs of Wasseypur' director's statement.'Bombay Velvet' featured Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar in key roles. Even though the film underperformed at the box office, Amit Trivedi's music score received appreciation. The film was produced by Phantom Films.Kashyap recently announced his upcoming crime drama 'Nishaanchi', which marks the acting debut of Aaishvary Thackeray. The film is scheduled to release on September 19, 2025.'Nishaanchi' is produced by Ajay Rai and Ranjan Singh under Jar Pictures, in association with Flip Films, and will be distributed by Amazon MGM Studios.- EndsMust Watch

From Ajith's Hit Film To Watchman Job, This Actor Now Struggles With Financial Crisis

His name is Savi Sidhu. Born in Lucknow, he moved to Chandigarh with aspirations of entering the modelling industry. However, he eventually returned to Lucknow to study law. During his studies, he joined the theatre industry to hone his acting skills. Driven by his passion for acting, he later boarded a train to Mumbai. Savi Sidhu debuted as an actor in Bollywood with the film 'Taaqat', released in 1995. His performance impressed director Anurag Kashyap, who offered him a lead role in the film ' Paanch '. Unfortunately, the film was never released. Despite this setback, Anurag Kashyap did not forget Savi Sidhu's talent. Sidhu later played significant roles, such as Commissioner A.S. Samra in ' Black Friday ' (2007) and Dileep's elder brother in ' Gulaal ' (2009). Besides Kashyap's films, Sidhu also appeared in popular movies, including Patiala House (2011), D-Day (2013), and Nautanki Saala!, alongside Akshay Kumar. In Ajith's film ' Arrambam ', released in 2013 and directed by Vishnuvardhan, Sidhu portrayed a member of a terrorist group. He also acted in films like ' Maska ' (2020). Despite sharing the screen with big stars, his roles were often small. Although he gained recognition as an actor, he struggled to establish himself financially. After the film ' Bewakoofiyaan ', Savi Sidhu's opportunities in the film industry began to dwindle. By 2019, he was working as a watchman in a residential building in Lokhandwala. He tearfully explained his plight, revealing that he had lost his wife, parents, and mother-in-law in quick succession, leaving him isolated. Devastated by personal sorrows and financial difficulties, Sidhu took up the watchman job out of necessity. He works to meet his basic needs, but even after working 12 hours a day, his salary is insufficient. Sidhu expressed his regret about his current situation, noting that he, once an actor, now lacks even enough money to buy a bus ticket. He lamented that he couldn't remember the last time he went to a theatre to watch a movie. The dream of achieving success in cinema has reduced him to working as a watchman today.

Kalki Koechlin On Divorce With Anurag Kashyap: ‘It Was Hurtful To See Him With Someone Else'

Kalki Koechlin opens up about her painful divorce from Anurag Kashyap, linking it to the trauma of her parents' nasty separation. Kalki Koechlin has never shied away from confronting her past, whether through her art or candid interviews. In a recent conversation with Zoom, the actor opened up about the deep emotional scars from her childhood that she believes may have played a role in her eventual divorce from filmmaker Anurag Kashyap. Kalki and Anurag, who tied the knot in 2011 after working together on the critically acclaimed Dev D, were married for four years before parting ways in 2015. Now, nearly a decade later, Kalki is peeling back the layers behind that chapter of her life. 'My parents' divorce when I was 13, and it was really bad," she shared. 'They were really nasty to each other and it was like cold and mean growing up between them. That was very tough. Maybe that's why I'm divorced." The actress explained how her formative years in a household marred by tension and bitterness may have shaped how she approached love and conflict in adulthood. 'There is a certain part of you that jeopardises relationships once they start turning bad, but you are like 'oh this happens' because you have witnessed that as a child," she said. 'I have witnessed as a child my parents separating and hating each other. A part of you loses the faith to walk through the worst." However, Kalki also emphasized that growth and healing are possible. 'Consciousness and therapy" have played a significant role in helping her rewire those early perceptions of love and separation. Through reflection and time, she's gained clarity. Opening up further about the difficult period post-divorce with Anurag, Kalki admitted, 'The first few years after the divorce were not easy for us. Then came a point when we were like 'we need to stay out of each other's lives' because it was hurtful to see the other person with somebody else, just the reminders are so strong." But like many relationships that begin with great intensity, theirs has found a quieter, more respectful rhythm over time. 'It does take a few years," she said. 'We didn't get to it immediately and distance helped. Now we are in a good place and we are able to catch up once in a while." Kalki was even present at the wedding celebrations of Anurag's daughter Aaliyah Kashyap last year, a gesture that marked the matured relationship they now share. Aaliyah is Anurag's daughter from his first marriage to editor Aarti Bajaj. From her breakthrough performance in Dev D to the evolution of her personal journey, Kalki Koechlin continues to engage with life's complexities with honesty and grace — proving that vulnerability, when embraced, can be a powerful force for growth.
