Kalki Koechlin On Divorce With Anurag Kashyap: ‘It Was Hurtful To See Him With Someone Else'
Kalki Koechlin has never shied away from confronting her past, whether through her art or candid interviews. In a recent conversation with Zoom, the actor opened up about the deep emotional scars from her childhood that she believes may have played a role in her eventual divorce from filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.
Kalki and Anurag, who tied the knot in 2011 after working together on the critically acclaimed Dev D, were married for four years before parting ways in 2015. Now, nearly a decade later, Kalki is peeling back the layers behind that chapter of her life.
'My parents' divorce when I was 13, and it was really bad," she shared. 'They were really nasty to each other and it was like cold and mean growing up between them. That was very tough. Maybe that's why I'm divorced."
The actress explained how her formative years in a household marred by tension and bitterness may have shaped how she approached love and conflict in adulthood. 'There is a certain part of you that jeopardises relationships once they start turning bad, but you are like 'oh this happens' because you have witnessed that as a child," she said. 'I have witnessed as a child my parents separating and hating each other. A part of you loses the faith to walk through the worst."
However, Kalki also emphasized that growth and healing are possible. 'Consciousness and therapy" have played a significant role in helping her rewire those early perceptions of love and separation. Through reflection and time, she's gained clarity.
Opening up further about the difficult period post-divorce with Anurag, Kalki admitted, 'The first few years after the divorce were not easy for us. Then came a point when we were like 'we need to stay out of each other's lives' because it was hurtful to see the other person with somebody else, just the reminders are so strong."
But like many relationships that begin with great intensity, theirs has found a quieter, more respectful rhythm over time. 'It does take a few years," she said. 'We didn't get to it immediately and distance helped. Now we are in a good place and we are able to catch up once in a while."
Kalki was even present at the wedding celebrations of Anurag's daughter Aaliyah Kashyap last year, a gesture that marked the matured relationship they now share. Aaliyah is Anurag's daughter from his first marriage to editor Aarti Bajaj.
From her breakthrough performance in Dev D to the evolution of her personal journey, Kalki Koechlin continues to engage with life's complexities with honesty and grace — proving that vulnerability, when embraced, can be a powerful force for growth.

Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway Were 15 Minutes Away From Manhattan Tower Where Gunman Killed 4
Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway were filming The Devil Wears Prada 2 near a deadly mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan. Gunman Shane Tamura killed four before dying by suicide. Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway were shooting scenes for The Devil Wears Prada 2 just 15 minutes away from the Midtown Manhattan skyscraper where a deadly mass shooting took place on Monday. The cast was working at 1221 Avenue of the Americas and had wrapped filming at least three hours before gunman Shane Devon Tamura entered 345 Park Avenue, opened fire, and killed four people before dying by suicide. Miranda Priestly and Andy Sachs are filming their upcoming comedy drama The Devil Wears Prada 2. As Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway reprise their iconic roles in the second instalment of the movie, directed by David Frankel, they have already been spotted shooting on location in New York City. The horror unfolded just a few blocks away. A man who killed four people, then committed suicide in a New York skyscraper, may have been targeting the NFL offices there because he blamed the American football league for brain injuries he said he suffered, Mayor Eric Adams said on Tuesday. The revelation that the killer, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, carried a note referring to the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), offered the first possible motive for the shootings that brought central Manhattan to a standstill. The attacker shot a police officer outside the tower on Park Avenue, then opened fire in the lobby, before trying to head up to the National Football League's offices, armed with a semi-automatic rifle. 'The note said that he felt he had CTE, a known brain injury for those who participated in contact sports. He appeared to have blamed the NFL for his injury," Adams told CBS News. Tamura had never actually played for the professional league but was reportedly a high school football standout in California. The note asked that his brain be examined for CTE damage, The New York Times reported. The bloodshed sparked a massive police response in the heart of the city which is not far from where a disgruntled gunman had shot and killed the CEO of UnitedHealthcare in broad daylight last December. New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Tamura had a history of mental health issues. President Donald Trump on Tuesday called the mass shooting a 'senseless act of violence" carried out by a 'lunatic". view comments First Published: July 29, 2025, 21:37 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Tanishaa Mukerji Defends Saiyaara, Slams ‘Paid' Audience Claim: ‘This Is Bollywood Bashing'
Tanishaa Mukerji reacted to claims that Saiyaara makers paid young people to cry and act emotional in theatres while watching the film. Here's what she said! Saiyaara, starring debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, has caused a stir at the box office, and has emerged as a surprise blockbuster. Saiyaara fever has gripped audiences across the country, especially Gen-Z, with emotional reactions flooding social media. Several videos of people crying and shouting inside the theatres while watching Saiyaara went viral on Instagram. Now, a podcast suggesting that these extreme reactions were planned by the filmmakers, caught the attention of actor Tanishaa Mukerji. She strongly responded to claims suggesting that the makers paid people to cry and act emotional in theatres, calling it yet another case of 'Bollywood bashing'. She defended the film, and stated that there is nothing wrong with people reacting to the film this way. In The Asymmetric Crew podcast, Shantanu Deshpande raised questions about the viral frenzy surrounding Mohit Suri's Saiyaara. 'What's happening with this ridiculous Saiyaara movie. The producer of this movie, in my view, has paid ₹500 in dehadi to lots of these Gen-Z young folks to go into these theatres and put on emotional performances of crying… This is how the movie is getting promoted by the way. The whole world has now become a bunch of performers," he said. Kajol's sister Tanishaa Mukerji reacted to the viral reel, and slammed the claims. She defended the film, and wrote, 'Completely disagree. Times are changing and these people are stuck in the past. Love and appreciate the new. And honestly What rubbish is this man saying. Does he know anything for a fact. He is using the phenomenon of Saiyara to get views by talking negatively." She further added, 'If people are reacting to a film what is so wrong about that. Just because he cannot relate doesn't mean the younger generation doesn't either. Every generation is different. This is india. We react. Go watch the film see how the audiences are moved. Then talk. This is just Bollywood bashing ! Brands just have to find new ways to connect to their audiences!" Saiyaara has officially crossed Rs 250 crore net in India and over Rs 300 crore worldwide—making it one of the biggest sleeper hits of 2025. The film, directed by Mohit Suri, released in theatres on July 18. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
