Caitlin Clark dazzles on sensational WNBA return as Indiana Fever take down champion New York Liberty

Daily Mail19 hours ago

As Caitlin Clark prepared to return from a five- game injury absence on Saturday, she was - it turns out - needlessly cautious.
She spoke beforehand about giving herself 'grace' as she returned from her quad problem. After all, it was the first time she'd been sidelined since high school, and she hadn't played in three weeks.
'You know, maybe shake off some rust and figure some things out, and just get back into the flow of it,' she told reporters.
That plan proved to be completely, almost laughably hypothetical as Clark got right back to her very best in front of a packed Gainbridge Fieldhouse, scoring 32 points in a 102-88 win to knock off the defending champions.
If there was any sign at all of the time she'd spent away, perhaps it was the sight of her huffing and puffing after the conclusion of the first quarter.
Crucially, though, that fatigue came after she buried three-pointers on three consecutive possessions, sticking out her tongue in celebration as she dragged her team back in the game. Now that was the Clark we remembered.
The reigning Rookie of the Year may still be getting her legs and lungs under her, but fans were treated to the full Clark experience on Saturday.
Her playmaking, as she threaded the needle to Kelsey Mitchell for her first assist of the game. Her brashness, as she earned herself a technical foul for jawing at the refs in the second quarter.
And especially her absurd shooting range, as she ended the afternoon with seven triples. As she came down from her quick nine-point burst in the first half, she pulled up not far in front of midcourt. The shot missed, but it was hard not to feel it was a justified heat check with how she was playing.
It took a little bit for Clark to get going, but this crowd - many of whom descended upon the area around the arena a couple of hours before - were happy to be patient.
The Liberty raced out to 17-6 lead as Sabrina Ionescu was the most impressive guard on the court in the early stages.
Yet it wasn't too long before Clark, who only scored her second field goal with 3:06 remaining in the first quarter, got going.
Things rapidly shifted in the next few minutes. Clark ended the period with 14 points, the Fever found themselves down just two and the Fever fans were on their feet.
The offense kept humming from there, as Lexie Hull and Kelsey Mitchell had productive first halves too, while Clark ended the half with a fairly astonishing 25. And she wasn't done just yet.
Ionescu awoke again to begin the third quarter, scoring a quick five points. A pair of free throws from Nastaha Cloud (after a bucket a couple of minutes before) then flipped the advantage to a six-point lead for the visitors to briefly quiet an enthusiastic daytime crowd.
But Clark and her teammates weren't about to let the Liberty spoil her return.
The former Iowa star continued getting to her spots at will, Aaliyah Boston helped with some makes inside and the Liberty - without key starter Jonquel Jones - struggled to keep up with what looked a high-octane Fever offense as the lead stretched to as much as 13 in the third quarter.
Clark showed a rare bit of mortality towards the end of the third quarter when she missed a pair of free throws.
Coupled with several turnovers in the fourth quarter - one sequence saw her cough up the ball on consecutive possessions - the Liberty were given the chance to stick around. They obliged (if only for a bit) as the lead shrunk to four before Boston and Mitchell made some big plays with Clark getting a breather.
She checked into the game for the final time with 3:43 left and an 11-point lead, and put any chances of an already-improbable Liberty comeback to bed with a couple of nifty assists.
Before the win, Clark said that it 'almost feels like the start of the season' given that she only played four games before getting hurt.
There can't be any doubt after this stunning performance that she's in midseason form.

Missouri governor signs off on financial aid for Chiefs, Royals stadiums

June 15 - Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe signed off on legislation that could provide millions of dollars for stadium upgrades for the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. Under the bill approved in a special session Wednesday by Missouri lawmakers, the state agreed to authorize bonds to pay for up to half of the cost to build or renovate a stadium, as well as offer tax credits. Local governments also would provide unspecifed assistance. The two teams play at the Truman Sports Complex, with their stadiums side by side. Arrowhead Stadium opened in 1972 as the home of the Chiefs, with the Royals moving into what now is called Kauffman Stadium the following season. Though still esthetically pleasing, the two stadiums are among the oldest in their sports. In the NFL, only the Chicago Bears (Soldier Field, built in 1924) and Green Bay Packers (Lambeau Field, 1957) play in older venues. In Major League Baseball, only the Boston Red Sox (Fenway Park, 1912), Chicago Cubs (Wrigley Field, 1914), Los Angeles Dodgers (Dodger Stadium, 1962) and Los Angeles Angels (Angel Stadium, 1966) have stadiums with a longer life span. The signed bill in Missouri applies to any assistance for any NFL or MLB team that wants to undergo a stadium renovation or build of at least $500 million. That means the St. Louis Cardinals also could get financial aid should they want to improve Busch Stadium, which opened in 2006 amid a wave of new stadiums. The Chiefs and Royals have a looming deadline, however. In an effort to lure the teams to Kansas, that state last year authorized the issuance of bonds for as much as 70 percent of the cost of new stadiums. That offer is scheduled to expire June 30. Kansas City, Mo., tucked in the northwest corner of the state, sits right on the border with Kansas. Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo. are separated by just four miles, for example. Neither team has discounted a move to Kansas. The Chiefs previously unveiled renderings for a proposed multimillion dollar renovation of Arrowhead Stadium. The Royals have said they want to move from Kauffman Stadium, preferably to a new ballpark downtown. In April 2024, voters in Jackson County, Mo., rejected a sales tax measure that would have helped to pay for Arrowhead renovations and a stadium for the Royals. The teams' leases for their existing stadiums expire in January 2031. --Field Level Media

Kamaru Usman breaks down in tears after picking up first win in nearly four years vs Buckley at UFC Atlanta

KAMARU USMAN was moved to tears after winning his do-or-die octagon return. The former welterweight and pound-for-pound king returned to the cage for the first time in 20 months early this morning in the main event of UFC Atlanta against Jaoquin Buckley. 5 5 5 5 There were serious concerns that Usman's time at the top was a thing of the past following three straight losses to Leon Edwards and Khamzat Chimaev. But the 38-year-old rolled back the years with a suffocating display across five rounds to earn a unanimous decision victory courtesy of 49–46, 49–46, 48–47 scorecards. An emotional Usman teared up in his post-fight interview as he said: "It's been a while. I needed to get that monkey off my back. "I know I'm still able to do this at the highest level. "Sometimes when you're going up against a young, hungry guy like that, very talented, very aggressive, you've got to pull out the skills and use your experience. "And that's what I did tonight." Usman insists victory over the surging Buckley has shown his detractors he's still very much at the top of his game. He said: 'I know it's a running joke, everybody wants to get on the internet and talk s***, 'Oh, his knees, his knees.' JOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUS 5 "Well, shut the f*** up, I can still do what I do. "I could do that to anybody [in the welterweight division], any one of them. "But like I said, I needed to get that monkey off my back. "Early on in my career as I was rolling, once I had that monkey off my back and I knew I was rolling, I was able to open up. "And you guys saw those spectacular knockouts. I still got them in there.' Following his dominant return to the win column, Usman has set his sights on becoming a two-time king of the welterweights. He roared: 'I have been, and always will be, the f**king boogeyman."
