4 dead, one missing & 8 critical as bridge across Indrayani River in Kund Mala tourist spot near Pune collapses

Time of India16-06-2025
Pune: Four people, including a five-year-old boy, died, one person was missing and eight others were critically injured after an iron and concrete footbridge, also used by two-wheeler riders collapsed in the Indrayani River near Kund Mala, a popular tourist destination about 40km from Pune, at 3.30pm on Sunday.
The narrow bridge connects Shelarwadi, near Bhegdewadi close to the old Pune-Mumbai highway, with Indori. It was declared dangerous and closed for use.
Minister for water resources and disaster management Girish Mahajan told reporters at the spot, "A crowd of (100+) people on the bridge at the time of the incident was beyond its carrying capacity, following which it collapsed as a large number of tourists had come here to enjoy their holiday.
A signboard telling people not to enter this structure was also installed, but they still went there."
Pimpri Chinchwad's deputy commissioner of police Vishal Gaikwad told TOI, "Three of the deceased have been identified as Chandrakant Sathle, Rohit Mane and Vihan Mane (5). The identity of the fourth victim has not yet been established." At least 51 people were injured in the accident.
Barring the critically injured, the condition of the remaining 42 victims was reported to be out of danger as they were being treated in various hospitals.

Eight of them were discharged after treatment, the authorities said.
An elaborate rescue operation, led by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, fire brigade and other rescue agencies along with heavy duty cranes to lift the collapsed iron guard rail continued till late Sunday evening.
Three of the victims were trapped under these collapsed structures. The rescuers managed to pull out the bodies of two victims but a third person was reported missing.
Pimpri Chinchwad's police commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choubey said search operations will resume on Monday morning under the collapsed bridge and downstream sections of the river.
Senior public works department officials told TOI that they constructed the footbridge over three decades ago and handed it over to Pune zilla parishad for maintenance and its upkeep was the ZP's responsibility. A new parallel bridge has been sanctioned and work will begin after the rains.
Local MLA Sunil Shelke told TOI, "The administration sanctioned Rs 8 crore and the tendering process is over. " Local authorities, including Indori village's sarpanch, had flagged the old bridge as unsafe.
"Despite a warning sign put up by the sarpanch, people continued to use it," the PWD official said. District administration officials said there were over a 100 people on the bridge when it collapsed. They said the bridge was closed for public movement after it was termed 'dangerous' for use.
However, local residents said that it was still being used, and there were no barricades or restrictions by the police or the local administration. The bridge was also being used by two-wheeler riders from two villages as a shortcut to reach the main road. Several bikes were also swept away in the accident, an official said.
"There was no space. It was crowded, and there were some bikes on it. The situation worsened quickly," Umakant Dalvi, a survivor, told TOI.
He said many ran towards the main road after it collapsed. Deputy commandant of NDRF Deepak Tiwari said the iron structure had to be cut and then removed by cranes. Two bodies were recovered from under the mangled frames.
Barely a week ago, Pune district collector Jitendra Dudi had passed an order listing several restrictions for people visiting rivers, lakes, waterfalls and other popular weekend spots during the monsoon in Lonavla and other places in the district.
The affected area was also covered under the prohibitory orders. Officials said that although warning boards were in place and police personnel were stationed in the area, it was overcrowded.
Dudi told TOI, "A five-member committee will be constituted to investigate the accident. The committee will have two primary mandates: first, to examine whether there was any administrative lapse, and second, to recommend changes to the existing standard operating procedures.
It will be headed by an additional collector ranked officer and the panel will submit its report within a fortnight."
Dudi said, " People must strictly follow the prohibitory orders issued for all tourist locations in the district, especially areas with waterfalls or other water bodies." Mahajan said it was also the responsibility of tourists to follow prohibitory orders. "I will request the CM, who holds the home ministry, to act against police personnel if found guilty.
The bridge was not guarded despite orders to keep it closed," he said. The state govt has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each for the next of kin and treatment of the injured will be fully covered by the district administration, the collector said

The third edition of the New India Foundation's Translation Fellowships is accepting applications till December 31, 2025. The fellowships will be awarded across ten languages for translating non-fiction texts published from 1850 onwards. Each fellow will receive a grant of Rs 6 lakhs over a period of six months. The languages in consideration for this year's fellowship are Assamese, Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Odia, Tamil, and Urdu. The jury for these fellowships this year includes the NIF Trustees: political scientist Niraja Jayal Gopal, historian Srinath Raghavan, partner trilegal Rahul Matthan, and entrepreneur Manish Sabharwal, alongside the Language Expert Committee in all ten languages, comprising esteemed scholars, professors, academics and literary translators. Massive 22-inch rat found in UK home, residents call for action as sightings surge: 'Bigger than my grown cat'

Source: Facebook Residents of Normanby in Redcar and Cleveland, North Yorkshire, were left horrified after an enormous rat measuring 22 inches from nose to tail was discovered inside a home. The rodent, described as being 'almost the size of a small cat,' was found by a pest control worker responding to a routine callout. What was initially an isolated incident quickly became a viral social media topic after local councillors shared photos online, drawing attention to a growing rat infestation problem across the region. The discovery has ignited a broader conversation among residents, who have reported increasingly frequent rat sightings in alleyways, around overflowing rubbish bins, on overgrown public land, and even crossing streets in broad daylight. The fact that such a massive rodent managed to find its way inside a home has amplified fears of a public health crisis. 22-inch rat found in UK home image goes viral, residents report more sightings The shocking image of the oversized rat, carefully sealed inside a large plastic bag, was posted on Facebook by Eston Ward councillors David Taylor and Stephen Martin. They revealed that the rat was discovered during routine pest control work in the Normanby area. The Facebook post instantly caught attention, with horrified residents sharing their own experiences: One user described seeing two rats left dead on the street to rot. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! Lulutox Undo Another claimed to have spotted a rat 'the size of a Jack Russell' drinking from a puddle. Others expressed disbelief, comparing the rodent to the size of their grown domestic cats. Comments ranged from disgust to fear, with one person writing, 'That rat is bigger than my grown cat,' while another questioned, 'Proper sewer rat that... must be something going down if they're surfacing?' This surge of public reaction has revealed the scale of the issue and how unsettled residents feel about the worsening rodent population in their neighborhoods. Why are rat sightings increasing According to the councillors, several factors have contributed to the surge in rodent activity: Overflowing bins and improper waste disposal Overgrown public land and unmaintained council-owned plots Increased availability of food sources for pests Reduced domestic pest control intervention by local authorities Two years ago, Redcar and Cleveland faced similar rodent issues but managed to control them through coordinated pest control measures. However, the councillors warn that the current situation is more severe because the council no longer handles domestic rat infestations. Instead, residents are now given advice and are required to hire private pest control services at their own expense. This shift has left many residents vulnerable, especially those who cannot afford costly pest control treatments, creating an ideal environment for rats to multiply unchecked. Rising rodent sightings raise concerns over urban management The councillors stressed that if the issue is left unaddressed, rats will continue to invade homes and public areas, putting the health and safety of the community at risk. They have urged immediate action, including: Clearing overgrown public plots Addressing waste collection and bin overflow issues Considering reinstating council-supported domestic pest control services The discovery of the giant 22-inch rat is being seen as a wake-up call for local authorities. Residents are demanding proactive measures to prevent a potential full-scale rodent infestation and restore public confidence in local sanitation and safety. While isolated incidents of large rodents are not unheard of in urban areas, the Normanby case stands out due to the sheer size of the rat and the growing pattern of infestations across Redcar and Cleveland. For many residents, this incident has transformed what was once an occasional nuisance into a major community concern. The incident also raises questions about how urban environments and public health systems manage pest control responsibilities amid budget constraints and changing policies. Until decisive measures are implemented, locals fear that sightings of oversized rats could become even more common—potentially putting homes, businesses, and public health at risk.
