Teacher's name printed as ‘Kutta' on Ration card, responds by barking at magistrate; old video resurfaces
The incident took place in Bankura district during a Duarey Sarkar camp, a West Bengal government outreach programme. Srikanti Kumar Dutta, a qualified teacher, had spent weeks trying to get the error corrected through official channels. Repeated visits, paperwork, and appeals went nowhere.
'I felt humiliated,' Mr Dutta had told NDTV in 2022. 'I had to go three times, but no one listened. I'm a qualified teacher, yet I haven't been called for any interview.'
When even the camp's senior officials ignored his request, Dutta walked up to a car marked Executive Magistrate and began barking loudly — an act he later described as a desperate response to being repeatedly dismissed. 'If the person who made this mistake had 'Kutta' written next to his name, what would he have done?' he said.
The act, recorded on video at the time, received limited attention then. But now, in 2025, the clip has resurfaced and gone viral, drawing renewed attention to the everyday bureaucratic delays citizens face.
Dutta's name was eventually corrected two days after the protest. He thanked the media for amplifying his voice, saying, 'There must be thousands like me. Just look at the growing crowd at the correction counters- it speaks for itself.'
Commenting on the video, a user wrote, 'Can imagine his level of frustration.'
Another user wrote, 'Flaming protest..!! A 360 degree performance.'
The third user commented on X, 'It's a very novel way of protest. He's actually drilled it in so well. Misspelling such a beautiful name as Dutta into Kutta is so horrifying. If I was this Dutta, I would have not only barked, but also bitten the BDO!'

The Registrar General has established a three-tier training structure: national trainer, master trainer, and field trainer, to provide focused and need-based training for each phase of Census 2027. Field trainers will impart training to around 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors, the post added. 'Census 2027 will have a focused publicity campaign for nationwide awareness, inclusive participation, last-mile engagement and support for field operations. It will emphasize on sharing accurate, authentic and timely information ensuring cohesive and effective outreach effort,' it said. For Census 2027, administrative boundaries across India will be frozen on January 1, 2026. States and Union Territories have been requested not to make changes to administrative boundaries between January 1, 2026, and March 31, 2027. In a letter to all states and Union Territories, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India Mritunjay Kumar Narayan told them to make any proposed changes to the boundaries of administrative units before December 31, 2025, when they will be considered final for the census exercise. He said all villages and towns are divided into uniform enumeration blocks, and for each block, an enumerator is assigned to avoid any miss or repetition during the population count.

Social media influencer Rajshree More on Monday alleged that Raheel Sheikh, son of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) state Vice-President Javed Sheikh, assaulted her while intoxicated inside his car, boasted of his connections, and later, attempts were made to dissuade her from filing an FIR. A video that surfaced on Monday showed a nearly naked Raheel Sheikh, shirtless and allegedly drunk, verbally abusing More and identifying himself as the son of an MNS leader. Immediately after, the Shiv Sena-UBT demanded action, and authorities arrested Sheikh on charges of outraging a woman's modesty, negligent driving, and verbal abuse. An FIR was registered at the Amboli Police Station, and he remains in custody. In an exclusive interview with IANS, Rajshree More claimed he deliberately targeted her vehicle, hit it, and endangered nearby pedestrians. "I was driving when his Innova smashed into my vehicle from behind. Then it advanced, struck me again, and damaged my car badly. He didn't stop. He nearly ran over three pedestrians walking in front of me and many more behind. It was a wild, drunken rampage." She further recounted with shock how Sheikh was nearly naked and unapologetic. "He was drunk, his pants had fallen down, and his dirty belly hanging down. He wildly abused me, declaring, 'I am Raheel Sheikh, son of Javed Sheikh. Go to the police station tomorrow morning and find out who my father is'." More said Javed Sheikh tried to convince her not to proceed legally: "They begged me not to file an FIR - 'his career will be ruined'. I asked what 'studying at 27' meant; they couldn't answer. They promised to send him abroad. He's 27 - not exactly a student. I asked how they could trust a drunk behind the wheel. They pleaded for apologies, but I stood firm.' Language won't fill potholes or create jobs." Defending her stance, she said: "Of the 45 people working with me, 30 are Marathi, 20 non-Marathi. Language is not a barrier—humanity is. We must speak in whatever tongue we understand. Language alone won't feed us." Describing Rahee Sheikh's actions as "hooliganism", More dismissed any cultural or linguistic justification: "This is not heroism, but cowardly hooliganism fueled by political influence. Wearing a political badge doesn't give one the right to abuse or intimidate." Despite attempts to portray her as politically motivated, More insisted she is not from any political party. "No political allegiance—Congress, BJP, none. If I were affiliated, they'd paint me as biased. But I'm an independent influencer. My clients and colleagues aren't primarily Marathi. I stood up not for politics, but for justice," she added.

Amid China stranglehold, Modi tells Brics to secure critical mineral supplies
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called on Brics countries to work together in order to secure critical mineral supply chains and ensure that no one nation is able to dominate and weaponize these resources. His call at the 17th Brics Summit in Rio de Janeiro comes amid a Chinese chokehold on global rare earth supplies. Brics is a group of 11 countries that was set up by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Modi said it was important to make critical mineral supply chains reliable and ensure that no one country uses these resources for its own selfish gains or as a weapon against others, according to a press statement by the Prime minister's office (PMO) on 7 July. "We need to work together to make supply chains for critical minerals and technology secure and reliable. It's important to ensure that no country uses these resources for its own selfish gain or as a weapon against others," said Modi. To be sure, the PMO's press statement was an approximate English translation of Modi's remarks, which were delivered in Hindi. Modi's call for Brics collaboration, a veiled nudge to China, comes amid a global supply shortage of rare earth metals and allied products due to an export control order issued by the Chinese commerce ministry in April. China has approximately 90-95% of the world's rare earth metal processing capacity, allowing it to use its exports to its own advantage. Rare earth metals and their products are used in strategic sectors such as renewable energy, clean mobility and electronics, among others. Separately, Modi also called for urgent reforms to global 'governance institutions', underlining the need to give developing countries a stronger voice in international decision-making. Modi said institutions such as the UN Security Council, International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, and World Trade Organization (WTO) must be overhauled to reflect 21st-century realities. Modi's remarks on rare earth minerals came just days after another international coalition—the Quad, made up of the US, Japan, Australia, and India—announced a Quad Critical Minerals Initiative, pledging to work together to secure and diversify supply chains. A joint statement by the Quad strategic partners on 1 July described the initiative as "an ambitious expansion of our partnership to strengthen economic security and collective resilience by collaborating to secure and diversify critical minerals supply chains". At the Brics summit, Modi also spoke about various initiatives India had undertaken which were aligned with Brics nations in technology, including a sharp focus on artificial intelligence (AI). He said India will organize an "AI Impact Summit' next year for improved co-ordination among all countries. "We see AI as a medium to enhance human values and potential. Working on the mantra of "A.I. for All", today we're widely and actively using AI in sectors like agriculture, health, education, governance in India," said Modi. 'We must work together for Responsible AI. Global standards must be created that can verify the authenticity of digital content, so that we can identify the source of the content and maintain transparency and prevent misuse.' India is set to host the next Brics summit in 2026. Modi also said nations in the Global South have some special expectations and aspirations from Brics and that India had aligned its efforts in multiple domains with other Brics nations. He said the Brics Agricultural Research Platform, established in India had enhanced collaboration in agricultural research. "It can become a medium for sharing research and best practices in topics such as agri-biotech, precision farming, and climate change adaptation. We can also extend its benefits to countries in the Global South," said Modi. Modi also called for the creation of a Brics Science and Research Repository, along the lines of India's 'One Nation, One Subscription' initiative to ensure nationwide access to academic journals. "Similar efforts have been undertaken in other Brics countries as well. I propose that we collectively explore the creation of a Brics Science and Research Repository, which could also serve as a valuable resource for the countries of the Global South," he said. Modi lauded the efforts taken by the Brics New Development Bank to aid nations in the Global South. He said the NDB must focus on demand-driven approaches, long-term financial sustainability, and healthy credit rating, adding that improving the internal systems in each nation will enhance the credibility of calls for reforms in multilateral institutions.
