Yathindra's comparison of CM Siddaramaiah with Krishnaraja Wadiyar kicks up row

Time of India26-07-2025
Mysuru/Bengaluru: A political controversy erupted Saturday after Congress MLC Yathindra, son of chief minister
, claimed the Congress govt led by his father had done more for Mysuru than Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar—the widely revered Maharaja of the erstwhile Mysore princely state.

"If you look at the grants released by Siddaramaiah for Mysuru, no one else has ever done so much for it. The amount of development Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar has done for Mysuru, a matching grant has been released by the Congress govt led by Siddaramaiah for the city," Yathindra had said in Mysuru.
The statement triggered strong backlash from the erstwhile royal family of Mysuru, opposition BJP functionaries, and others.
While Siddaramaiah appeared to distance himself from the comparison, the remarks ignited sharp criticism.
Mysuru MP and scion of the family, Yaduveer Krishnadatta Wadiyar said, "When someone gets power, it is meant for serving people. Coming to power is not a game. Whether it was Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar or the elected govts after independence of the country, all have had responsibilities towards the people.
No one sets a target to outdo others. What is more important is that we have to live up to the expectations of people.
"
Senior Congressman-turned-independent MLC AH Vishwanath also condemned Yathindra's comparison, calling it arrogant. "The statement that Siddaramaiah's govt has done more work than Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar is the height of arrogance. Siddaramaiah calls himself bigger than former chief minister late Devaraj Urs and now his son terms his father towering over the Mysuru Maharaja.

It seems arrogance is running in their blood.
"
Opposition leader in the legislative assembly, R Ashoka of BJP, dismissed the remark as a poor joke. "Can there be any comparison between Krishnaraja Wadiyar and Siddaramaiah? Siddaramaiah hops from one party to another for power. This comparison has no meaning at all."
Ashoka also highlighted Krishnaraja Wadiyar's enduring legacy. "The Krishnaraja Sagar dam, improvements of the irrigation system, introduction of electricity in the state — a first in India — and the foundations for higher education and industrialisation were all achieved by the Maharaja.
If there was anyone who worked towards social justice in Karnataka, it was the Mysuru Maharaja whereas Siddaramaiah is creating rift between castes," he said.
Siddaramaiah avoided mentioning the late Maharaja and instead turned his attention to political rivals. "We have done more work than BJP. The saffron party has done nothing, but we have done more," he told the media at Arsikere in Hassan district, when asked about Yathindra's comments.

‘Time to save democracy': Kharge says ECI acts as ‘representative of the ruling party', backs Rahul's voter fraud claims

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), accusing it of acting like a 'representative of the ruling party' and allegedly failing in its constitutional duty to conduct free and fair elections. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge alleges 'Vote Chori' is being carried out strategically across several constituencies.(Sansad TV File) 'There was a time when the Election Commission of India was praised across the world. Many countries took training from our Election Commission to conduct fair elections. When any political party raised questions, the Commission would respond or clarify within constitutional limits,' Kharge said in a post on X, originally written in Hindi. 'Today, when someone questions the ECI, instead of responding, it acts like a representative of the ruling party, leveling counter-allegations and making baseless statements without considering the demands of opposition parties,' he alleged. Referring to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's remarks on alleged electoral irregularities, Kharge said, 'Today, Mr. Rahul Gandhi, after thorough investigation, cited examples from Karnataka's Mahadevapura Assembly Segment, explaining how the Election Commission allowed gross rigging in a single election, shredding its constitutional duties, with 1,00,250 votes stolen.' Kharge claimed that such irregularities were not isolated incidents. 'This #VoteChori is happening strategically across many seats in the country,' he added. Announcing the party's next move, he said, 'The Congress Party will raise public awareness about this. Tomorrow, we will begin from Freedom Park in Bengaluru, Karnataka.' 'The time has come to save democracy and the Constitution, to save the country!' the Congress chief added in the post. Addressing reporters at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi, claimed that the Maharashtra election results confirmed the Congress party's suspicion that the polls had been manipulated. 'Not giving machine-readable voter list convinced us that the Election Commission (EC) colluded with BJP to 'steal' elections in Maharashtra,' alleged the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He further said, 'They said we are going to destroy the CCTV footage. This was surprising to us because there was a question in Maharashtra about a massive voting after 5.30 pm for the numbers to add up. Our people knew that in the polling booths, no such thing happened. There was no massive voting after 5.30 pm.' 'These two things made us believe with reasonable certainty that the Election Commission of India was colluding with the BJP to steal elections,' Gandhi added.

'56-inch chest': How Opposition reacted as India has 20 days to avoid 50% Trump tariffs

Several Opposition parties have launched a scathing attack on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government after US President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, raising the total duties to 50 per cent. Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor outside Parliament in New Delhi.(PTI file) While criticism poured in from across party lines, the issue also triggered a rare moment of bipartisan unity. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi labelled Donald Trump a 'bully' and accused him of using economic pressure tactics. 'Trump's 50% tariff is economic blackmail — an attempt to bully India into an unfair trade deal,' Rahul Gandhi posted on X on Wednesday night. 'PM Modi better not let his weakness override the interests of the Indian people,' the Congress MP added. The comment marked a stark reversal from just days earlier, when Gandhi had accused Modi of "killing the Indian economy", seemingly agreeing with Trump's 'dead' economy remark. Another Congress MP Shashi Tharoor escalated his criticism of Trump, urging the India government to respond in kind by raising tariffs on American goods. 'It will definitely have an impact because we have a trade of $90 billion with them, and if everything becomes 50 per cent more expensive, buyers will also think why should they buy Indian things?... If they do this, we should also impose a 50 per cent tariff on American exports... It is not that any country can threaten us like this,' he told reporters on Thursday. Tharoor questioned why India should continue with the current 17 per cent average tariff on US goods. 'Why should we stop at 17%? We should also raise it to 50 per cent... We need to ask them, do they not value our relationship? If India doesn't matter to them, they should also not matter to us,' he said. How other Opposition leaders reacted Abhishek Banerjee: Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee led the charge, calling the steep tariff hike a 'diplomatic failure". Speaking in Kolkata, he said, 'Those who click photographs with (US President) Donald Trump and campaigned for him in Texas should answer why such steep tariffs have been imposed. This is a diplomatic failure. It will severely affect India's economy.' Banerjee, the newly appointed TMC Lok Sabha leader, accused the BJP of 'boasting about India's global clout while failing to protect economic interests.' He warned that the tariffs would hit jobs, exports, and key sectors like IT, pharma, and textiles. 'The economy is now in the ICU,' he added, blaming the Modi government's foreign policy for the crisis. "Those who used to talk about their '56-inch chest' are now being shown red eyes by other countries," Banerjee said, adding that the imposition of tariffs and the lack of global condemnation for the recent Pahalgam terror attack are indicators of India's diplomatic isolation. Siddaramaiah: In Karnataka, chief minister Siddaramaiah termed the tariff move 'economic blackmail' and said it was the result of Modi's obsession with 'headline management over real diplomacy.' Backing Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's criticism, Siddaramaiah said, 'His warning on Trump's 50 per cent tariff is no different. It is economic blackmail—the result of PM @narendramodi prioritising headline management over real diplomacy and national interest.' Siddaramaiah also accused Modi of pandering to Trump, recalling slogans like 'Abki Baar Trump Sarkar' and events like 'Howdy Modi' and 'Namaste Trump'. 'But Trump wasn't impressed. He saw it not as diplomacy, but surrender,' the chief minister said. Priyanka Chaturvedi: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi called Trump's move 'hypocrisy' and said India cannot be bullied into a trade deal. 'The way Donald Trump is particularly targeting India about Russian Oil, totally forgetting his own hypocrisy of doing trade with Russia... We cannot be bullied into a deal,' she said. Chaturvedi warned of serious consequences for Indian exporters, stating, 'Many of our exporters are going to be impacted by this tariff, making Indian goods unreachable and not viable for American consumers.' Karti Chidambaram: Congress MP Karti Chidambaram also questioned the Modi government's claims of a 'special relationship' with Trump. 'The special relationship which the Indian administration claimed to have with President Trump, doesn't exist,' he said. He demanded that the government take Parliament into confidence and outline a clear response strategy. Pappu Yadav: Independent MP Pappu Yadav said, 'Because of the 50% tariff that the US has imposed on us, our pharmaceutical industry will collapse.' Asaduddin Owaisi: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi took a direct swipe at Trump, calling the move 'bullying by the buffoon-in-chief". He accused the Modi government of silence and strategic surrender. 'These tariffs will hurt Indian exporters, MSMEs, and manufacturers... Was selling out our strategic autonomy worth filling your friends' billionaire coffers?' he wrote on X. Uddhav Thackeray: The supremo of Shiv Sena (UBT) said Trump was 'mocking India and Narendra Modi' and that the PM had failed to respond strongly. 'Trump is mocking India and Narendra Modi. We are unable to respond to him, let alone seek answers from him. This government has failed on the foreign policy front,' he said. The latest round of criticism comes after Trump announced a separate 25% tariff on Indian goods on Wednesday, set to take effect in 21 days, in response to India's continued purchases of Russian oil. The decision has raised concerns about potential economic fallout across multiple sectors. The ministry of external affairs has termed the US action 'unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable,' vowing to protect India's national interests.

Rahul Gandhi Claims Voter Fraud In Karnataka, Maharashtra Polls; ECI Responds

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday claimed that massive electoral fraud occurred in the Mahadevapura Assembly segment of Karnataka's Bangalore Central constituency during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Addressing a press conference, Rahul Gandhi presented the Congress party's research on voting in the Mahadevapura Assembly in Karnataka and alleged that 'vote chori' (vote theft) of 1,00,250 votes took place in the assembly. 'We found 1,00,250 votes stolen. Stolen in five different ways: duplicate voters, fake and invalid addresses, and bulk voters registered at a single address, sometimes in a building with 50–60 people listed. But when we go there, there is no record of those people living there—only one family lives in that house,' Rahul Gandhi alleged. 'Invalid photos… Then the misuse of Form 6. Form 6 allows new people to become voters,' he added. Rahul Gandhi said that anti-incumbency affects every party, but results went in unexpected directions in Haryana and Madhya Pradesh, where the BJP was reportedly facing anti-incumbency. 'Anti-incumbency hits every single party in every democracy, but for some reason, the BJP is the only party that does not suffer from anti-incumbency. Exit polls and opinion polls say one thing, but you saw in the Haryana and MP elections—suddenly, the results go in another direction with a massive swing. This also includes our internal polling, which is sophisticated,' Gandhi said. Reiterating his claims on fake voters in the Maharashtra Assembly Elections, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the number of voters added to the list in the five months ahead of the polls was more than the people added in the last five years. "Maharashtra, we weren't able to tell the logic behind it. In Maharashtra and Haryana, we saw it right in front of our faces. We said publicly and told EC, more voters were added in five months than in five years in Maharashtra. More voters than the entire population of Maharashtra. Huge jump in voter turnout after 5 pm. Our alliance got wiped out while the alliance swept in the Lok Sabha. At the state level, between Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha, one crore voters came in," he alleged. Shortly after Rahul Gandhi's claim of poll irregularities, the Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) responded with a strongly worded letter, asking him to sign an affidavit detailing his allegations about the addition and deletion of electors. Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka writes a letter to Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi. Says, "... It is understood that during a Press Conference held today, you had mentioned about the inclusion of ineligible electors and exclusion of eligible electors in the Electoral Rolls cited… — ANI (@ANI) August 7, 2025 The Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka wrote a letter to Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi, stating, 'It is understood that during a press conference held today, you had mentioned the inclusion of ineligible electors and exclusion of eligible electors in the electoral rolls as cited in Para 3. You are kindly requested to sign and return the enclosed Declaration/Oath under Rule 20(3)(b) of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, along with the name(s) of such elector(s), so that necessary proceedings can be initiated.' Rahul Gandhi promptly responded to the Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer request, saying, 'What I say to the people is my word. I'm saying it publicly to everybody. Take it as an oath.' On the Election Commission's response, Rahul Gandhi said, 'I'm a politician. What I say to the people is my word. I'm saying it publicly to everybody. Take it as an oath. This is their data, and we are displaying their data. This is not our data. This is Election Commission data. Interestingly, they haven't denied the information. They haven't said that the voter list Rahul Gandhi is referring to is wrong. Why don't you say it is wrong? Because you know the truth. You know that we know you have done this across the country.'
