Heart Failure In Your 30s? Understanding The Myths, Risks, And Modern Fixes

News182 days ago
Indians are prone to developing heart problems at a younger age compared to those in the West. One of the most common reasons behind this trend is the fast-paced modern lifestyle.
If you're in your 20s or 30s, you might only think about your heart during an intense workout or when trying to hit a new personal best. But this tireless muscle works every second of your life, quietly powering your every moment. It deserves more than just an occasional thought. No matter your age, your heart needs consistent care.
According to the World Health Organisation, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) affect around 17.9 million people annually. In India, the situation is particularly alarming: we account for 60% of the world's heart disease cases, and Indians tend to develop heart problems at a younger age than populations in Western countries. Dr. Rajneesh Malhotra, Chairman & Head, Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, Delhi, warns, 'With the speed and direction of our lives in the present time, stressors and cardiovascular diseases can only be anticipated to grow, unless we take a conscious step towards altering the path of our cardiac health."
Understanding Heart Failure
Heart failure occurs when the heart becomes too weak or stiff to pump blood efficiently. It can result from conditions such as high blood pressure, blocked arteries, heart rhythm problems, or congenital defects. The body tries to compensate by enlarging the heart, pumping faster, or diverting blood to vital organs, but these measures are temporary. In India, younger adults are increasingly affected, often due to lifestyle choices: chronic stress, poor sleep, unhealthy diets, and lack of exercise all contribute to risk.
Lifestyle and Medical Interventions
Early detection is critical. Managing blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and stress levels, along with regular exercise and adequate sleep, can dramatically lower the risk. For those already diagnosed, medicines, dietary adjustments, and cardiac rehabilitation programmes can slow disease progression.
The Role of Technology
For patients with advanced heart failure, a heart transplant is often the gold standard, but long donor waitlists and health constraints limit access. Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs), surgically implanted pumps that help circulate blood, are transforming treatment. Once seen as a short-term 'bridge" to transplant, LVADs are now used as long-term, 'destination" therapy.
Recent innovations have made these devices smaller, safer, and more efficient, reducing complications and improving quality of life. Patients can return to many normal activities, with survival rates steadily improving. For many, LVADs offer not just extended life, but renewed independence and hope.

PM Modi Sounds Alarm On Rising Obesity, Urges Indians To Cut Cooking Oil Use By 10%

In his 79th Independence Day address from the historic Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shifted focus from politics to a pressing health concern: the rapid rise of obesity in India. Speaking to millions of citizens in an address that lasted 103 minutes, he highlighted how lifestyle changes, poor dietary habits, and reduced physical activity are fuelling a wave of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. "In the coming years, obesity can become a major challenge for our country," the Prime Minister said. "If every family decides to reduce the use of cooking oil by 10%, it will benefit the health of the nation." The 'Cooking Oil' Connection PM Modi's call to action was clear and measurable-cut down cooking oil consumption by 10%. The message targets a key driver of poor health: excessive intake of refined oils and fried foods. Nutritionists have long warned that high oil consumption, especially oils high in saturated and trans fats, contributes to weight gain, high cholesterol, and cardiovascular risks. The PM urged Indians to embrace traditional cooking methods that use less oil, rely more on steaming, roasting, and boiling, and incorporate diverse plant-based ingredients. Lifestyle Overhaul Needed PM Modi's speech went beyond dietary advice. He pressed for daily exercise as a non-negotiable part of life, recommending yoga, walking, cycling, and home-based workouts. He also suggested rediscovering traditional Indian dietary wisdom, which historically balanced cereals, pulses, vegetables, and seasonal fruits without overreliance on packaged and processed foods. Why This Warning Matters Now India's obesity problem is no longer confined to cities. According to the National Family Health Survey-5 (2019-21), the following points should raise alarm bells well beyond PM Modi's Independence Day address: 24% of women and 23% of men in India are overweight or obese, a sharp rise from NFHS-4 (2015-16), which recorded 20.7% and 18.6% respectively. Urban obesity rates are higher, but rural areas are catching up due to increased consumption of calorie-dense foods and more sedentary lifestyles. The Indian Council of Medical Research-India Diabetes (ICMR-INDIAB) Study (2023) also reported further facts that have a link to obesity and NCDs in India: 101 million Indians have diabetes. 136 million have prediabetes-much of it linked to excess body weight. Childhood obesity is also on the rise. AIIMS studies show a 5-14% prevalence among school-aged children, with urban private school students most at risk. Obesity's Long-Term Impact Experts warn that obesity increases the risk of multiple chronic conditions: Type 2 diabetes Hypertension & cardiovascular disease Certain cancers, including breast and colon cancer Osteoarthritis due to joint stress If left unchecked, the economic burden of obesity-related illnesses could overwhelm India's healthcare system. The World Obesity Federation predicts that by 2035, nearly 1 in 3 Indians could be overweight or obese. A National Mission For Health PM Modi framed the fight against obesity as both a personal responsibility and a collective mission. His suggestion, to cut oil usage by 10%, is simple enough to be adopted nationwide without major cost implications. "Let us pledge to gift the next generation a healthier nation," Modi urged, "where fitness is celebrated as much as festivals." His remarks also align with ongoing government campaigns like Fit India Movement and Poshan Abhiyaan, which promote healthier eating, active lifestyles, and nutritional awareness. Takeaway For Households If you are inspired by PM Modi's address and call to action, here are a few simple steps you could adopt immediately to fight the rising obesity rates in India: Measure oil before cooking, don't pour directly from the container. Opt for healthier oils (mustard, groundnut, rice bran) in moderation. Use cooking methods other than frying, like steaming, boiling, etc. to reduce oil needs. Limit deep-fried foods to occasional treats. Incorporate activity into family routines, because even 30 minutes a day helps. Can Strawberries Really Whiten Teeth? Dentist Debunks Popular DIY Trend

While the mallic acid in strawberries can whiten the teeth, the effect is short-term and cosmetic only. A dentist debunks the science behind this viral DIY hack. Strawberries are a delicious and nutrient-packed fruit, often praised for their vitamin C and antioxidant benefits. But beyond their nutritional value, they've also found their way into DIY beauty hacks, particularly for teeth whitening. From Pinterest boards to TikTok videos, the 'strawberry teeth whitening" trick continues to trend, with many claiming it gives them a brighter smile. However, according to Dr. Prakash Tekwani, Consultant Dentist at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, this whitening effect is largely a temporary illusion. ' Strawberries contain malic acid, which can remove some surface stains from teeth, making them appear slightly whiter. But the change is minimal, and it does not alter the natural shade of your teeth," he explains. Why Strawberries Seem to Work The malic acid in strawberries acts as a mild natural astringent. This can break down some of the surface stains caused by coffee, tea, or certain foods. 'If you have light staining from beverages, you might notice a small difference after applying mashed strawberries or mixing them with baking soda," says Dr. Tekwani. 'However, this is only a short-term cosmetic enhancement and not a replacement for professional whitening." The Risks of Overuse While strawberries are safe to eat, applying them directly to your teeth too often can cause damage. 'The acid in strawberries can slowly erode tooth enamel, leading to sensitivity and even making teeth more prone to staining over time," warns Dr. Tekwani. This is why, if you do try the method, rinsing thoroughly and waiting at least 30 minutes before brushing is crucial to minimise enamel wear. Healthier Ways to Whiten Teeth For a truly brighter smile, Dr. Tekwani recommends proven dental practices. 'Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing once a day, and visiting your dentist for routine cleaning remain the gold standard for oral care," he says. Over-the-counter whitening toothpaste approved by dentists or in-clinic treatments are safer and more effective for lasting results. While strawberries may temporarily freshen your smile and reduce minor plaque buildup, they are not a miracle teeth-whitening solution. A balanced approach by limiting staining foods and drinks, maintaining daily cleaning habits, and seeking professional care, remains the best recipe for a healthy, radiant smile. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
