
"Structure Shook For 5 Minutes": Witnesses Recount Pune Bridge Collapse

An iron bridge near Pune shook for around five minutes before it gave in to the weight of scores of tourists and several two wheelers, witnesses said after the incident left two people dead and over 30 injured.
Amol, who was on the bridge at the time, said screams rang through the air as the rusted structure collapsed, with locals rushing rushing to the spot to initiate rescue operations. "I struggled for 15 minutes in the water and finally held a pipe and came out," he told NDTV.
Latika, who was at the spot frequented by tourists during monsoon season, said at last 50 people were present on the bridge at the time it collapsed. "People had their scooters and motorcycles parked on the bridge. Nobody paid heed to danger signs," she said.
The bridge in Kundmala collapsed over the Indrayani river, which is in spate after the area received heavy rains over the last two days.
Police and disaster relief workers, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), reached the spot and rescue work is ongoing. Efforts are also on to locate those who are missing after being swept away by the river.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Pune's Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar said the iron bridge was rusted and old, adding that a Rs 8 crore plan for constructing a new bridge over the river was sanctioned.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that Rs 5 lakh compensation for the families of those who lost their lives, adding that the government will bear the expenditure of treatment of the injured.
His colleague and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said instructions have been issued to conduct structural audits on all bridges over the river in the state. "This accident will be thoroughly investigated, and action will be taken against those responsible. No one will be spared," he said.
The bridge collapse in Pune rural's Maval area comes even as an orange alert remains in place for Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, with heavy to very heavy rains expected in the ghat regions. The area had received heavy rains in the last two days.

Abducted Noida businessman and his driver rescued, five arrested
Noida: Police rescued a businessman and his driver who were kidnapped on Thursday, and also arrested five persons who reached out to their targets by offering fraudulent loan assistance. Two cars (Fortuner and Sonnet) that were stolen from the abducted men and Rs 75,000 in cash, one Samsung watch, three mobile phones, eight ATM cards, Aadhar cards, one laptop with a charger, two cheque books, and an illegal pistol with cartridges were recovered from the accused. An FIR was filed against seven persons under sections 140(1) (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 351 (3) (criminal intimidation), 61(2) (criminal conspiracy), 308(5) (extortion), 309(4) (robbery), 317(2) (stolen property) of the BNS. The search for other accomplices of the accused is ongoing, said DCP Avasthy.

Grenade attack on police post in SBS Nagar: NIA chargesheet against 3
Chandigarh: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has chargesheeted three accused in the 2024 case relating to a grenade attack on a police post in Punjab's SBS Nagar (Nawanshahr) district. The incident has been traced to the banned terror outfit, Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), the NIA said Sunday. "Yugpreet Singh, also known as Yuvi Nihang; Jaskaran Singh alias Shah; and Harjot Singh alias Jot Hundal, all hailing from Rahon village in SBS Nagar, have been charged under various sections of the UAPA, Explosive Substances Act, and other related provisions," said the NIA. "The NIA has also launched investigations against the KZF chief and designated individual terrorist, Ranjit Singh, also known as Neeta; the outfit's member operative Jagjit Singh Lahiri alias Jagga alias Jagga Miapur alias Hari Singh, currently in the UK; and other unidentified terror operatives," the NIA added. "The NIA, which took over the case from the Punjab Police in March this year, found that Jagga recruited Yugpreet Singh through an acquaintance in the UK. Along with other KZF terrorists and operatives, Jagga radicalised Yugpreet and handled him via encrypted messaging applications.
