Wishaw man Danny encourages locals to zip slide over River Clyde for Maggie's Lanarkshire

The event at the Riverside Museum, running from 9am to 3pm, will feature many inspiring centre visitors from Maggie's Lanarkshire and Forth Valley.
A Wishaw man is one of several Lanarkshire locals encouraging daredevils the zip slide over the River Clyde for Maggie's Lanarkshire.

On Saturday, August 30, supporters at Maggie's cancer charity are taking part in the incredible Zip Slide the Clyde event, soaring 100ft high and 1245ft along Glasgow's iconic cityscape to raise money for their centres in Lanarkshire and Forth Valley.

The event at the Riverside Museum, running from 9am to 3pm, will feature many inspiring centre visitors from Maggie's Lanarkshire and Forth Valley.

One centre visitor from Maggie's Lanarkshire, 63-year-old Danny King, has been promoting the event within his local area of Wishaw.
Danny said he is proud to support Maggie's and is an advocate for the centre in Lanarkshire.

He said: 'They (Maggie's) are helpful to those who are going through a cancer journey, and you are made to feel part of the wider Maggie's family.
'As soon as you enter you are met with kind people who go out of their way to support, comfort, and direct you to the appropriate help that you require.'
Danny is an incredible supporter of Maggie's Lanarkshire, raising money through his festive dress up as Santa Clause at Christmas events in the Lanarkshire area.

This year, he has continued his efforts to find ways to fundraise for Maggie's Lanarkshire throughout the year and has been named Lanarkshire's 'Summer Santa' by Centre Fundraising Organiser, Kerry-Anne Lang.
Danny has previously participated in a Zip Slide event when he was 16 years old, stating that he 'really enjoyed it' and telling those who are considering taking part 'to go for it, it's for a great cause'.
Centre visitor Laura McCourt, 41, from South Lanarkshire has also decided to take part in the Zip Slide the Clyde event in honour of her Mum and to support Maggie's Lanarkshire.

Despite her fear of heights, Laura is determined to complete the Zip Slide the Clyde challenge.
She said 'I'm certainly not someone who likes to live outside my comfort zone, that's for sure! But when I saw the call for Zip Slide volunteers, I knew it was the perfect way to say a huge 'thank you' to Maggie's for the incredible support they've given me.'
In August 2024, following what they thought was a routine scan for a minor pain, Laura's mum was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer - completely symptomless until then.

Laura said that she had tried to cope with the news of her mum's diagnosis on her own, but her best friend urged and pushed her to go to Maggie's Lanarkshire for support.
She added: 'I was met with nothing but kindness. I spoke with a nurse specialist who listened, offered reassurance, and made me feel less alone.

'I've been having regular therapy sessions with one of their specialist psychologists ever since, helping me to process what's happening and slowly build a sense of calm again.'
Since Maggie's opened its first centre in 1996, the charity has developed a programme of support that is proven to help people with cancer, as well as family and friends, take back control.
Maggie's professional staff include psychologists, cancer support specialists and benefits advisors.

Lorrie Cameron, Centre Head at Maggie's Lanarkshire said: 'Maggie's relies entirely on voluntary donations from individuals and the local community to enable our professional team to provide specialist cancer support, psychological support and benefits advice for everyone who needs it.'
If you have any questions about the zip slide event, get in touch with the team at Maggie's Lanarkshire. The spaces are filling up quickly, with a limited number remaining. If you would like to take part click here.

Flintshire's support for teenager battling rare heart cancer

In May, Lexi Collins' family had taken her to Turkey to celebrate her 13th birthday. She spent 10 days there laughing and living life to the fullest, according to mum Becky, who lives in Connah's Quay. But, just three weeks later, their whole world changed. Lexi was rushed to the Countess of Chester Hospital hospital and was diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive cancer of the heart. According to the family, it is a diagnosis so rare that even most doctors will never see a case like it. Since then, Lexi has been through two open-heart surgeries, has had a pacemaker fitted, and is now undergoing intensive chemotherapy. Mum Becky said: "While Lexi was in surgery, we also had to say goodbye to her beloved dog (16-year-old Ruby), who was her best friend and constant companion. It was a heartbreak on top of heartbreak. "These last few months have been a whirlwind of hospital stays, fear, and uncertainty. But through it all, Lexi has stayed positive, strong, and full of hope. She's handled every challenge with a courage that leaves us all in awe." The family's own fundraiser - which can be donated to here - has collected £6,095 so far (correct at time of writing). That aims to raise a sum of £20,000 to help make Lexi's dream of going to New York a reality. Lexi Collins with mum Becky. (Image: Becky Collins) Another wish - which has now been granted by the 'When you Wish Upon a Star' charity - was for her to have her dream bedroom. Mum Becky said: "Lexi has always been obsessed with Christmas - especially the movie Home Alone. Her biggest wish is to visit New York at Christmas, to see the Rockefeller Christmas tree and all the festive magic of the city, just like Kevin in the movie. TOP STORIES "After everything she's been through, we just want to give Lexi something to look forward to. Something magical. Something that feels like hope. "If you can help in any way - through a donation, a share, or just by keeping Lex in your thoughts - we'd be so grateful. Let's make her Christmas wish come true." Becky added: "There are a lot of fundraisers going on around Flintshire in Lexi's name at the moment, it's unbelievable. Lex and I are so grateful for everyone's support."

Stonehouse Folk Club tunes up for new season

The group has announced its latest schedule of live performances and acoustic sessions in the town over the coming months Stonehouse Folk Club is getting set to hit the high notes for its new season of entertainment – and are encouraging music fans to join them for their regular guest performer and acoustic sessions. ‌ The club's autumn/winter session starts on Friday, September 12, with a return visit from Graham Carter, with highlights over the coming months including Canadian visitors Jessica Pearson and her band East Wind, first-time performers the Eilidh Grant Trio with Stevie Lawrence and Fiona Cuthill and a Christmas concert with club favourites North Sea Gas. ‌ Group organisers hope to welcome as many people as possible to this term's sessions, ensuring the club remains well-supported and able to provide community music events despite constantly rising costs. ‌ Stonehouse Folk Club was founded in 1997 following a successful live radio broadcast of traditional music from the Thistle Inn on New Street in the town, and going on to establish twice-monthly sessions for musicians and singers, with regular open sessions and special guest appearances. It has been based for the past 16 years at St Ninian's church hall on Vicars Road, welcoming music enthusiasts of all ages including under-16s attending free of charge, and combines both guest performances and open 'sing-a-round' evenings. ‌ Local musicians also have the chance to take to the stage to showcase their talents at the opening floor spots on each group night. Group member John Young said: 'The club has welcomed many artists and bands established in traditional music throughout Scotland, as well as supporting local talent, and although based in traditional music, the club welcomes a range of musical styles including bluegrass, Americana, country and blues. 'Despite the cost-of-living crisis and pressure on club finances, we have endeavoured to keep the cost of entrance as low as we can to encourage everyone to attend, and costs are subsidised by a club raffle generously supported by our patrons. ‌ 'We need to ensure the community continues to support live music in our village or the club faces the possibility of continuing to provide such events with the rising costs of accommodation, insurance, equipment and artists fees – so we're appealing to the community and wider support throughout Lanarkshire to continue the success Stonehouse by coming to the forthcoming programme of artists performing.' Graham Carter is the first performer of the new season on September 12, while the following weekend sees Stonehouse Folk Club host their popular free Leadhills sessions weekend at the Hopetoun Arms hotel on September 19 and 20. ‌ There will be an acoustic session back at the regular Stonehouse venue on October 10, followed by the performances by Jessica Pearson on October 24 and the Eilidh Grant Trio on November 14. The winter programme concludes with an acoustic session at the Auld Stonehouse Cafe on November 28 and then the North Sea Gas Christmas event on December 12. All take place at 7.30pm, with entry costing £7 for adults and only £3 for the open sessions, and under-16s going free, and there is no additional club membership cost. John added: 'As well as the main act we are always looking for new talent, young and old, to provide floor spots at the start of the night. If you can't play or sing don't worry, just come along and listen to the night's entertainment and tap yer wellies! ‌ 'The club have also supported numerous charitable causes and organisations in the village and beyond.'
