J&K: One suspected militant killed in gunfight with security forces in Kulgam
The gunfight began on Friday evening during a search operation conducted by a joint team of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army and paramilitary forces in Akhal village.
A security operation codenamed ' Operation Akhal ' was launched after receiving intelligence inputs about militant presence in the area, The Indian Express quoted unidentified police officials as saying.
'Intermittent and intense firefight continued through the night,' the Army's Chinar Corps said in a social media post. 'Alert troops responded with calibrated fire…One terrorist has been neutralised by the security forces so far.'
Senior police officer VK Birdi told NDTV that one or two more suspected militants may be hiding in the area.
The operation was still underway, the Army said.

This is the third major gunfight in the Union Territory in the past few days.
On Wednesday, the Army said that two suspected militants were killed in a gunfight with security forces while attempting to infiltrate across the Line of Control into Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district.
On July 28, three militants were killed in Operation Mahadev, a security operation in the Lidwas meadows of Srinagar's Dara area.
On July 29, Union Home Minister Amit Shah told Parliament that the three militants neutralised in Operation Mahadev were terrorists involved in the Pahalgam terror attack.
He had said the operation was jointly carried out by the Army, the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force.
The three men identified as Suleiman Shah, Afghan and Jibran, were members of the Lashkar-e-Taiba terror group.
The men were identified as having been involved in the Pahalgam attack by those who had provided them shelter, the Union minister had told Parliament.
The terror attack at Baisaran near Pahalgam town in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22 left 26 persons dead and 16 injured. The terrorists targeted tourists after asking their names to ascertain their religion, the police said. All but three of those killed were Hindu.

'When we ask questions inside the House or outside, they (the government) do not answer. We are termed anti-national for asking questions. The issue of the court's observation was also discussed during a meeting of the INDIA bloc floor leaders on Tuesday, after which the Congress said 'all the leaders of the INDIA bloc parties agreed that the sitting judge has made an extraordinary observation which is unwarranted on the democratic rights of political parties'. Asked about impasse in Parliament over opposition demand for a debate on the electoral roll revision, Vadra put the blame on the government. 'The Parliament is not functioning. Army, with old newspaper clip, takes a dig at US
NEW DELHI: The Indian Army on Tuesday waded into the ongoing war of words between India and the US over tariffs and Russian oil, sharing an old newspaper clip detailing decades of military support from Washington to Pakistan in the run-up to the 1971 war. The Army's Eastern Command at Kolkata posted on 'X' a newspaper clip from Aug 5, 1971, highlighting the article's headline: "US arms worth $2 billion shipped to Pakistan since 1954". "This day that year build-up of war - Aug 5, 1971. #KnowFacts," the post said. The newspaper article mentioned the then defence production minister V C Shukla telling RS that both the US and China had supplied Pakistan with arms at "concessional rates or throw-away prices". The French sold Pakistan arms against hard cash with "no concessions", while USSR had denied supplying weapons to India's western adversary. "Our estimate of the value of US arms shipments to Pakistan since they entered into the arms pact in 1954 was $2 billion," Shukla had said. New Delhi: The INDIA bloc Tuesday rallied behind Rahul Gandhi, saying the Supreme Court's observations against the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition for his alleged remarks on the Army in the context of the Galwan Valley clash with China were 'unwarranted', as it was the moral duty of every citizen to hold the government accountable. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also defended her brother, suggesting that the court overstepped its role. Presiding over a two-judge bench, Justice Dipankar Datta, while hearing an appeal by Rahul against the Allahabad High Court's refusal to grant him relief in a criminal defamation case pending in a Lucknow court, remarked Monday that 'if you (Rahul) are a true Indian, you would not say all these things'. The court asked: 'How do you know China occupied 2,000 square kilometres of Indian territory?' Despite taking umbrage, the bench gave relief to Rahul. The INDIA block took up the matter for discussion during the meeting of the alliance's Parliament floor leaders Tuesday. 'All the leaders of the India parties agreed that the sitting judge has made an extraordinary observation which is unwarranted on the democratic rights of political parties. It is the responsibility of political parties, especially the Leader of Opposition, to comment on issues of national interest. When a government fails so spectacularly to defend our borders, it is every citizen's moral duty to hold it accountable,' the Congress said in a statement. Speaking to reporters in the Parliament House complex, Priyanka said Rahul's remarks have been misinterpreted as he would never speak against the Army which he holds 'in the highest respect'.
