Katie Taylor named Sportswoman of the Month for July

Irish Times15 hours ago
It's often a source of no little puzzlement to non-boxing folk that after knocking seven bells out of each other through a bout, fighters can then bring themselves to embrace at the end and pay lavish tributes to each other. They're made of different stuff, these people.
But that's how it all ended up between
Katie Taylor
and Amanda Serrano come
the conclusion of their epic trilogy
at Madison Square Garden in July when the Bray woman made it 3-0 against the Puerto Rican to remain the undisputed world lightweight champion.
'What an amazing champion,' she said of Serrano. 'We created history together three times. My name will always be embedded with hers and I am very happy about that. It's amazing to have a rival like that in the sport.'
Serrano, meanwhile, paid a powerful tribute in return. 'Thank you, Katie Taylor, for an incredible three fights and 30 rounds. It has truly been an honour to face you, a true champion and warrior. So blessed to have shared the ring with such an amazing fighter. To be considered the Greatest, you have to act like one. She does that both in and out of the ring. Thank you truly.'

But both fighters had been warriors through the trilogy. The first of their bouts, in 2022, also in MSG, was named 'Fight of the Year' by Sports Illustrated. Taylor pipped that one by a split decision, Serrano feeling decidedly aggrieved about the result, and she was no happier when Taylor won by a unanimous decision in their second meeting, this time in Arlington, Texas. Brutal and bloody it was too, Taylor rarely having taken that level of punishment through her career.
Come the end of fight three? As our own Keith Duggan, who was there that night, put it: '
Taylor managed to erase the question marks and silence the grumbles
after their previous two battles to finish with a supremely controlled performance. She owned the night.'

It was a conclusive victory, even if one judge called it a draw while the other two scored it an emphatic 97-93 in Taylor's favour. She put this much cleaner win down to her boxing 'smart', rather than 'just ending up in a war'. She's 39 and she's still fine-tuning her craft.
As she reflected after, a night such as this, when the famous New York venue hosted its first all-female card, was the stuff of her dreams when she started out in the sport.
'To be headlining an all-female card was an absolute privilege,' she said. 'These are the sort of opportunities that people didn't even think possible a few years ago.'
The fight was screened live on Netflix, averaging six million viewers, which put it just behind the NCAA 'March Madness' basketball final in the list of 2025's most watched women's sporting events. The crowd of 19,721 was the biggest ever for an all-women's boxing card and the highest attendance for a female sporting event in MSG's history.
Our five-time Sportswoman of the Year, as you'll know by now, is no stranger to making history. Is there more to come? We'll see. If she could sort out that appearance in Croke Park, you'd suspect there's another fight left in her.

Regis Le Bris praises Sunderland's ‘togetherness' after beating West Ham

Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris hailed his side's 'togetherness' as they marked their return to the Premier League with a 3-0 win over West Ham. Following an eight-year absence from the top flight, second-half goals from Eliezer Mayenda, Dan Ballard and substitute Wilson Isidor wrapped up three points. The Wearsiders cemented their spot in the Premier League with a Championship play-off win against Sheffield United in May and have since made 11 signings in preparation for the competition's demands. Seven new arrivals were handed their Sunderland debuts in the starting line-up, but it was play-off heroes Mayenda, Ballard and Isidor who proved to be the difference. Asked about the importance of those goalscorers, Le Bris said: 'It's really important for two reasons at least, the first one they showed they can step up today. We'll see later, but today it was the case. Read More Sunderland mark Premier League return in style against sorry Hammers 'At the same time they are really important because they keep the identity of the club and the way we worked last season. 'We've built this strength about togetherness, about the way we can work as a team and I think we showed it today. These players are important for that.' West Ham had controlled the game in the first half before the hosts grew into the match. Mayenda, goalscorer in the semi-final and the final of last season's play-offs, sent Sunderland ahead in the 61st minute with a header. Ballard extended their lead 12 minutes later, nodding home into the same spot as his last-gasp winner against Coventry in the play-off semi-finals. Another play-off goalscorer Isidor completed the afternoon with a cool finish into the bottom corner and Le Bris urged his newly-promoted side to soak up the moment. He said: 'Just enjoy now, first of all. Second point, Granit (Xhaka) spoke 30 seconds about this togetherness, this way of suffering together because it will be key for the season, stay humble and reset.' West Ham boss Graham Potter believes his side struggled to find their rhythm after half-time. The Hammers found themselves in promising positions around the box throughout the first half, with captain Jarrod Bowen particularly impressing in their attack. Although they continued to retain possession after the break, they struggled to trouble the Sunderland goal until the final stages when Bowen, Tomas Soucek and Callum Wilson went close. Reflecting on the game, Potter said: 'We didn't get into the rhythm at all. 'We started a little bit passive when we had the ball, I think we could've been brave, more assertive and played better. We didn't play at a level I think we can play at. 'It wasn't a result – with the greatest respect – of Sunderland pushing us back and playing well. It was an action, a cross from 30 or 40 metres we should be happy to defend. 'Before you know it, you're 1-0 down here at the Stadium of Light and they've been waiting eight years, of course it's going to be difficult. 'The second goal isn't a particularly good one from our perspective either. 'If you don't do the basics in football, you're in trouble. We've paid that price today.'

Premier League: Spurs and Sunderland open with big wins

Tottenham began the Thomas Frank era in the Premier League with a convincing 3-0 home victory over promoted side Burnley thanks to a majestic double from striker Richarlison, which included an acrobatic volley. The Brazilian opened the scoring in the 10th minute when he turned in a cross from new recruit Mohammed Kudus and the pair combined again on the hour mark when Richarlison volleyed a well-timed effort into the net to extend the lead. Six minutes later, Brennan Johnson made it 3-0 on the counter-attack after Richarlison won the ball back in midfield as Burnley struggled to deal with Spurs' press and intensity. It was no meek surrender from the visitors, however, as they managed to get forward and take nearly as many shots as Tottenham, but Scott Parker's side lacked quality in finishing. Meanwhile, Eberechi Eze is understood to be closing in on a move to Tottenham. It is understood the England international has reached an agreement with current club Crystal Palace that he will not play for them at Chelsea on Sunday. Eze was a critical player as Palace won the FA Cup last season and also featured as the Eagles saw off Liverpool to lift the Community Shield last weekend. The 27-year-old – who has long been linked with a move across London – joined Palace in 2020 from QPR and has gone on to win 11 England caps. Sunderland marked their return to the Premier League in style with a 3-0 win over West Ham at the Stadium of Light. Following an eight-year absence from the top flight, the Black Cats withstood some promising attacks spearheaded by Hammers captain Jarrod Bowen in the first half and after the break it was their Championship play-off heroes who proved to be the difference. They went ahead through Eliezer Mayenda's header and Dan Ballard soon extended the advantage, nodding home into the same spot as his last-gasp winner against Coventry in the play-off semi-finals. Substitute Wilson Isidor struck in added time to wrap up three points in Sunderland's first Premier League appearance since May 2017. Substitute Rodrigo Muniz struck a dramatic added-time equaliser as Fulham snatched a 1-1 Premier League draw against Brighton at the Amex Stadium. Brazilian forward Muniz pounced six minutes beyond the 90 when the Seagulls failed to deal with a Harry Wilson corner. Albion were on course to begin the season with three points after Matt O'Riley converted a 55th-minute penalty following Sander Berge's foul on Georginio Rutter. Fulham had plenty of the ball after falling behind but rode their luck and rarely tested Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen before the late twist.
