Premier League: Spurs and Sunderland open with big wins
The Brazilian opened the scoring in the 10th minute when he turned in a cross from new recruit Mohammed Kudus and the pair combined again on the hour mark when Richarlison volleyed a well-timed effort into the net to extend the lead.
Six minutes later, Brennan Johnson made it 3-0 on the counter-attack after Richarlison won the ball back in midfield as Burnley struggled to deal with Spurs' press and intensity.
It was no meek surrender from the visitors, however, as they managed to get forward and take nearly as many shots as Tottenham, but Scott Parker's side lacked quality in finishing.
Meanwhile, Eberechi Eze is understood to be closing in on a move to Tottenham.
It is understood the England international has reached an agreement with current club Crystal Palace that he will not play for them at Chelsea on Sunday.
Eze was a critical player as Palace won the FA Cup last season and also featured as the Eagles saw off Liverpool to lift the Community Shield last weekend.
The 27-year-old – who has long been linked with a move across London – joined Palace in 2020 from QPR and has gone on to win 11 England caps.
Sunderland marked their return to the Premier League in style with a 3-0 win over West Ham at the Stadium of Light.
Following an eight-year absence from the top flight, the Black Cats withstood some promising attacks spearheaded by Hammers captain Jarrod Bowen in the first half and after the break it was their Championship play-off heroes who proved to be the difference.
They went ahead through Eliezer Mayenda's header and Dan Ballard soon extended the advantage, nodding home into the same spot as his last-gasp winner against Coventry in the play-off semi-finals.
Substitute Wilson Isidor struck in added time to wrap up three points in Sunderland's first Premier League appearance since May 2017.
Substitute Rodrigo Muniz struck a dramatic added-time equaliser as Fulham snatched a 1-1 Premier League draw against Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
Brazilian forward Muniz pounced six minutes beyond the 90 when the Seagulls failed to deal with a Harry Wilson corner.
Albion were on course to begin the season with three points after Matt O'Riley converted a 55th-minute penalty following Sander Berge's foul on Georginio Rutter.
Fulham had plenty of the ball after falling behind but rode their luck and rarely tested Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen before the late twist.

Calafiori the hero as Arsenal pip Amorim's United
Altay Bayindir's blunder handed Arsenal victory and undid a positive Manchester United performance in Sunday's pulsating Premier League encounter. Old Trafford rocked as Mikel Arteta's runners-up headed to the rebuilding Red Devils in the most eye-catching fixture of the opening weekend. United looked far better than the side that finished 15th last season – their worst top-flight campaign since 1974 – yet Ruben Amorim's side fell to a 1-0 defeat as Riccardo Calafiori capitalised on Bayindir's early flap. The back-up goalkeeper was outmuscled by William Saliba as he attempted to deal with a Declan Rice corner, tipping it on for the defender to nod into an empty net and silence Old Trafford after a bright start. Bayindir's error underlined concerns over the goalkeeping position at Old Trafford, where often unconvincing number one Andre Onana was absent as he works his way back from a hamstring injury. United are a work in progress but summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo looked sharp on their debuts, with Patrick Dorgu hitting a post with a lasered first-half effort. Arsenal keeper David Raya produced a string of important stops to keep the hosts at bay, with his man of the match of the display helping Arteta's side to victory. The atmosphere was as intense as United's start as they flew out the blocks in the summer sun, with Mbeumo getting an early attempt on goal as the hosts bossed play and the early possession. But Arsenal would take the sting out of proceedings with just 13 minutes on the clock. Bayindir flapped at Rice's inswinging corner under pressure from Saliba, with the Turkey international meekly palming on for Calafiori to head over the line. United's appeals for a foul fell on deaf ears as Arsenal scored their 31st Premier League goal from a corner since the start of the 2023-24 campaign – 11 more than any other team. That moment seemed to lead to some of the nervousness within the ground that Amorim referenced ahead of the game, but his side's refreshed approach and personnel helped lift the mood. Mbeumo saw a shot deflect wide before Dorgu followed a burst down the left with a fierce shot that hit the outside of the far post. Cunha looked like United's biggest threat and showed tenacity and confidence in the 32nd minute when his rampaging run from his own half led him to burst through Arsenal bodies and get a shot on Raya's goal. The goalkeeper comfortably dealt with that attempt and another from distance, but he had to be at his best to get a fingertip on the Brazil international's low drive from an acute angle as half-time approached. Arsenal were solid but unspectacular when the second half got under way, with Arteta replacing ineffective debutant Viktor Gyokeres on the hour mark. The Sweden international had shone under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon and had previously been linked with a move to United, whose fans cheered his substitution. United's new frontman Benjamin Sesko was introduced to a huge roar shortly after, offering a tantalising first look at their rebuilt front three. Cunha continued confidently and Mbeumo was a handful, with an acrobatic attempt soon followed by a header that forced a full stretch save from Raya. Sesko nodded across the face of goal as the home side continued to knock on the door, but Arsenal dug deep and Rice saw a whipped free-kick deflect narrowly wide at the other end. United pushed until the end and Cunha saw a penalty claim ignored, but there was no leveller as Arteta's side started the season with a win as '1-0 to the Arsenal' echoed around the ground.

Workmanlike Arsenal dig in to cloud new Manchester United dawn
Premier League: Manchester United 0 Arsenal 1 MANCHESTER United's brave new dawn was undone by familiar failings as Riccardo Calafiori proved to be an unlikely Old Trafford match-winner. United have splashed out in excess of £200m largely on new attacking talent in a bid to reinvigorate their quest for silverware under Ruben Amorim. There were flashes of inspiration from the likes of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in addition to a cameo from Benjamin Sesko to suggest that money has been invested wisely, despite Amorim's side drawing a blank for the 16th time in the last 39 league games. However it was at the opposite end, with the unwanted return of the defensive frailties of last season that proved to be the hosts' undoing as Arsenal claimed only a fourth win on their last 24 visits here - all of them by a single goal margin. In front of the watching England head coach Thomas Tuchel, it took less than 13 minutes to burst United's bubble as they shipped a comical opener from Arsenal's first corner of a contest which maintained a pleasing flow throughout. With five towering team-mates initially stationed on the edge of the area belatedly moving with menace into the six-yard box, there was nothing more complicated from Declan Rice than delivering the set-piece under crossbar. It should have been a regulation catch for Altay Bayindir, who was deputising for the injured Andre Onana. However, the Turk was horribly weak in his approach, easily impeded by William Saliba as the goalkeeper's ineffectual parry directed the ball to Calafiori to head home from all of a foot out, the full-back's first in the Premier League for seven months. As poor as they remain in defence, United were fluid in possession and carried a discernible threat going forward in search of an equaliser. Patrick Dorgu, released down the left by Bruno Fernandes, sent an angled drive beyond David Reya which struck the foot of the keeper's right-hand post. Matheus Cunha grew into the contest, initially shooting tamely at David Raya from 18 yards after a barnstorming foray from his own half saw the bustling Brazilian literally run through three Arsenal defenders before failing to make the most of the presentable chance he had worked so hard to fashion. Raya, joint winner of the Golden Glove last season, underlined his value to the visitors by applying the faintest of touches to keep out a sharp near post effort on the turn from the increasingly influential Cunha which would otherwise have found its way in at the far post. In contrast, Arsenal debutant Viktor Gyokeres, who had scored on his four previous opening day appearances for Coventry and Sporting Lisbon, had an afternoon to forget. The Sweden forward was hauled off after an anonymous hour running around to minimal effect in the Manchester sun. The hosts dominated possession without carving out a whole host of chances and Raya remained the busier of the keepers after the break, getting down well to his left to beat out Mbeumo's powerful header from an inviting Dorgu cross. United continued to press, but Arsenal are old hands at seeing out narrow victories like this. They coped comfortably enough with what the hosts could throw at them as Amorim's men launched the new campaign with that familiar sinking feeling from last season tin succumbing to their latest defeat. Newcastle complete €45 million signing of Jacob Ramsey
NEWCASTLE HAVE completed the signing of Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey. The 24-year-old has signed a long-term contract with the Magpies, who are understood to have paid an initial £39 million (€45 million) for his services, with a further £4m (€4.6m) due in add-ons. The Villa academy graduate, who made 167 appearances for the club, 10 of them in last season's Champions League, is head coach Eddie Howe's fourth acquisition of a difficult summer. Advertisement Ramsey said: 'I'm delighted to be here. It's been a mad two or three days, but I'm really happy to be here and I can't wait to get started. 'This is a big move for me, but as soon as I knew the gaffer was interested and really liked me, it didn't take much time to decide. His track record of developing players, especially those who have gone on to become internationals here, speaks for itself. 'It was always a tough game playing for Villa against Newcastle — the team is full of energy, so athletic, and the fans are so passionate. I feel my game will suit that, and I'm excited to be on the other end of it now.' The Magpies launched their Premier League campaign with a 0-0 draw at Villa on Saturday, and Ramsey will join the squad on the training pitch as they begin preparations for champions Liverpool's visit to Tyneside a week on Monday. Howe said: 'Jacob is another fantastic addition to our squad. His qualities will bring us something different on the pitch, and he fits the profile of being young and hungry to develop, but also with a wealth of Premier League football under his belt.
