Punjab LoP Bajwa calls Bhagwant Mann ‘figurehead CM'; alleges Kejriwal runs Punjab via Delhi-based appointees
CHANDIGARH: Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly and senior Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party government, claiming that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has been reduced to a mere figurehead while AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal acts as the 'super CM,' controlling key decisions and appointments in the state.
Bajwa accused the government of filling top positions in the Punjab Development Commission (PDC) with individuals from outside Punjab, many of whom are allegedly close to AAP's Delhi leadership. He said the PDC was formed in September 2023 through a notification under the Punjab Infrastructure (Development and Regulation) Act, without bringing a new Act before the Assembly for debate and approval.
He criticised the government for bypassing legislative procedures and acting in a non-transparent manner. In March 2024, the PDC advertised and appointed eight Advisors at Rs 2.65 lakh per month, 15 Joint Advisors at Rs 2.20 lakh per month, and 15 Senior Research Officers at Rs 1.25 lakh per month.
Bajwa claimed that most of these officials were non-Punjabis and were hired on a contractual basis without adhering to the mandatory requirement of Punjabi language proficiency. He pointed out that while Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is the Chairman of the PDC, the Vice Chairperson is a non-Punjabi, and three other members also belong to states outside Punjab.
'This is a direct insult to the youth and professionals of Punjab who are being ignored in their own state,' Bajwa said.

Cong leaders' show of unity falls flat as Bajwa walks out in a huff
Ludhiana: Three days before poll day, the Congress tried to put up a united front but failed. During a press conference held by the party's Punjab in-charge, Bhupesh Baghel , leaders who had remained distant from Ashu's campaign were also seen. They included the party's Punjab president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and leader of opposition Partap Singh Bajwa. Both Bajwa and Warring addressed the press conference with Baghel. Incidentally, West bypoll in-charge, Rana Gurjeet Singh, refrained from sharing the stage with them despite being present in the election office. Ashu did not join the press conference as he was out for campaigning. Warring drove Bhupesh Baghel, Partap Singh Bajwa and deputy chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, Mukesh Agnihotri to the party's election office, where Kapurthala MLA and campaign in-charge Rana Gurjeet Singh was present. Warring and Rana Gurjeet had a brief conversation, after which Bajwa alighted from the car and tried to walk out of the office. Warring went after Bajwa and persuaded him to come back. Those present speculated that Bajwa got offended on being told that Rana Gurjeet would participate in the press conference. Eventually, Rana Gurjeet maintained a distance from the press conference and kept sitting in the office. With the campaign in its last stages, the Congress made another effort to show unity. Earlier, during the nomination of Ashu, senior leaders, including Raja Warring, had reached the city. Speaking on the occasion, Bhupesh Baghel, Raja Warring, and Partap Singh Bajwa said that the West bypoll would set the stage for the 2027 assembly elections. They added that Punjabis wanted to get rid of "outsiders" who had fooled Punjab in the name of change. Warring asked why the CBI was silent about implementation of the same liquor policy which had been implemented in Delhi, in Punjab. When Warring and Bajwa were asked if they would campaign for Ashu or if they would return after holding one press conference, Warring said, "We do what Baghel Saab assigns us to do." On being questioned about Ashu's absence, Baghel replied, "He is busy campaigning. His presence is not necessary here." MSID:: 121887536 413 |

Didi blames ‘govt of thieves' for ‘procession of deaths'
Kolkata: "A govt of thieves" was running the country resulting in "the procession of deaths", CM said on Monday alluding to last week's multiple tragedies in Ahmedabad, Uttarakhand and Pune in which nearly 290 people had died. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Banerjee, slamming protesting BJP MLAs in the Bengal assembly for their corruption jibes, asked them to have "some shame". "The 2026 Bengal polls will reduce you to a big zero. People know your politics by now," she said, accusing BJP of "depriving Bengal's poor" even as it failed to halt "the procession of deaths in various mishaps" in BJP-governed states. "A half-pant minister, who did not find time to go to Manipur even once, came to my neighbourhood (in Kalighat) to protest against an incident that had taken place four-five days ago. He then hurled slippers at a Sikh cop," Banerjee said without naming Bengal BJP president and junior Union minister Sukanta Majumdar. "I, too, can go to your home. And, if you love slippers so much, please open a slippers stall," she added. "You shelter traitors. You strengthen those who sell the nation. Common people have no security. You have nothing specific to say, so you slander Trinamool and the administration to remain in news," Banerjee told BJP MLAs, reminding them that they had failed to prove even a single corruption charge. "I do not accept the ex-MP's pension of Rs 1.5 lakh. How dare they teach me ethics and honesty?" she asked, demanding answers from BJP on the Centre's non-disbursal of Bengal's funds. "Stop depriving Bengal. We have been denied the 100-day payout for the last four years. Funds meant for us are being allocated to other states, which is a crime. You may have complaints. But 155-156 central teams have come and we have answered all their questions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now But the funds block continues. You have to pay if you have made people work," she said, adding that similar complaints were there in BJP-governed Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, too; but their 100-day payouts were never stopped. Banerjee also responded to BJP's OBC jibes: "Bengal has 30% Muslims, among the highest in the country. This has been the demography since Partition. We were not even born then. Is it right to deny the minority food, education? Is it right to say we will not treat them as equals, as human beings?"

Plea in Kerala HC seeks court-monitored probe into two shipwrecks
Kochi: A public interest litigation has been filed in high court seeking a court-monitored time-bound investigation by a multi-agency special investigation team (SIT) into the recent shipwrecks involving MSC ELSA 3 and MV Wan Hai 503 off the Kerala coast. The petitioner, Parappangadi resident Ummer Ottummal, urged that the SIT comprise representatives from the ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC), the directorate general of shipping, Indian Coast Guard, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and other relevant institutions. The petition, which will be taken up on Tuesday, further prays for the establishment of a dedicated coastal victims compensation, rehabilitation and environment restoration fund (CVCRERF) with an initial corpus of Rs 1,000 crore to be contributed by the central govt. According to the petitioner, this fund should be utilised for the benefit of the affected coastal communities and for the restoration of biodiversity and the coastal environment. Ummer, who claims to represent the 'collective conscience' of the fishermen community in Kerala, also seeks the constitution of a court-monitored environmental restoration task force, comprising independent ecological experts, scientists, maritime safety specialists and representatives of statutory bodies under the aegis of the MoEFCC. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo In addition, the petition calls for the formulation of a national coastal hybrid threat prevention framework and the constitution of a high-level inter-ministerial task force, with representation from the defence and environment ministries, to address strategic maritime security breaches, starting with the circumstances surrounding MSC ELSA 3 and MV Wan Hai 503. Referring to the incidents, namely, the sinking of the Liberian-flagged cargo ship MSC ELSA 3 off the Alappuzha coast on May 25 and the fire aboard the Singapore-flagged MV Wan Hai 503 off the Kannur coast on June 9, the petitioner alleged that they resulted in grave violations of the livelihood rights and safety of Kerala's coastal population, and were compounded by a failure to safeguard the region's ecology, biodiversity, and environment.
