Southampton 1-3 Newcastle - the fans' verdict

BBC News27-01-2025

We asked for your thoughts after Saturday's Premier League game between Southampton and Newcastle. Here are some of your comments:Saints fansBen: One of those matches where we get reminded that other teams are just better than us in every way. Nobody had an absolute howler, but Newcastle were still able to nullify us without leaving third gear. I'm looking forward to no VAR next season. The way it is implemented is disgusting. Darryl: I think most of us have given up with this season. I can't believe how poor we have been. In all honesty, we got promoted probably a season too early. It's not fun loosing every week!Daz: Absolute rubbish yet again! Sack the lot and bring in the under-21s. I guarantee they would do better. Why do the Saints' board bring in a manager that was sacked from his last job due to bad performance when what we needed was a proven manager with Premier League experience? We could have had Graham Potter or David Moyes. We have bought players with little or no Premier League experience and I think everyone from the board downwards needs a clearout. It's an embarrassing time to be a Saints supporter.David: We have only four players that are the standard to play in the Premier League when most teams have a bench full. This, I'm afraid, is our problem - we've needed a striker for three years. We are relegation favourites and at times our play is pitiful.Newcastle fansAnth: Getting back on the 'winning horse' was vital to ensure our Champions League ambitions are still alive and kicking. To overcome a shaky start and push on to a solid performance gets our mojo firing once more especially with important games appearing on the horizon. Well played boys - onwards and upwards!Si: Great comeback performance following last week's humbling at the hands of Bournemouth. This showed the resilience in the team and Eddie Howe's trust they could come back and perform following a crushing defeat. We seemed to take the foot off the throttle at 3-1 which maybe showed naivety, playing the bottom side. Overall a professional performance that keeps alive our hopes of a top-four place.Tommy: After the last game, I expected that kind of response. It wasn't our best performance but clearly it was extremely pleasant to see. Sandro Tonali is awesome and Alexander Isak unstoppable. Onwards and upwards for the Toon Army.Kevin: Newcastle won the game without getting out of third gear. Didn't panic at 1-0 down early on. Dan Burn and Fabian Schar give better balance in defence. Clinical and professional performance.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney face up to £13.4billion reality after Wrexham promotion

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney face up to £13.4billion reality after Wrexham promotion Wrexham have achieved huge success under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, but now face a tough test in the Championship, where many clubs are well-backed Wrexham co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are facing up to the financial reality of the Championship (Image: PA ) Wrexham's Hollywood owners are facing a stark new financial reality as the club prepares to compete in the Championship next season. The new campaign will mark the first time in 43 years that the Red Dragons have played in the second tier after previously spending four seasons in the old Second Division between 1978 and 1982. A lot has changed since then, with plenty of money floating around thanks to lucrative TV deals and parachute payments on offer for newly-relegated Premier League sides. ‌ Many club owners are also very wealthy in their own right, with one part-owner boasting a net worth stretching to an astonishing £13.4billion. Wrexham's co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are hardly short of money themselves. ‌ The two A-listers have an estimated combined net worth of around £295m ($400m) thanks to their acting income and business investments. However, even their fortunes pale in comparison to the Championship's biggest hitters. As the North Wales outfit prepares for life in the second tier, WalesOnline looks at how Reynolds and McElhenney's wealth stacks up to that of their rival owners. QPR are often highlighted at the top end of the scale in terms of their owners' combined net worth, with their main shareholders being Ruben Gnanalingam, Richard Reilly and Amit Bhatia. Bhatia is the son in law and a representative of steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, who alone is said to be worth £13.4bn, according to Forbes. Article continues below Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna will be well-backed next season (Image: PA ) Not too far behind are American investment fund Gamechanger 20 Ltd, who own newly-relegated Ipswich, with reports valuing the firm at a staggering £10.8bn. Another well-backed side are Leicester, who also recently dropped out of the Premier League, with the Srivaddhanaprabha family worth approximately £2.7bn. Meanwhile, Bristol City owner Steve Lansdown holds a wealth of £2.3bn, and Stoke City custodian John Coates is said to have £2.2bn. At the bottom end of the table in terms of their net worth are Watford's Gino Pozzo (£93m), Millwall's James Berylson (£110m) and Hull City's Acun Ilicali (£147m). ‌ The combined net worth of Reynolds and McElhenney would therefore place Wrexham in a lower mid-table position in the Championship. However, they do have an ace up their sleeves in the form of the Allyn family from New York, who came on board as minority owners of the club in October. That was until September 2015 when the firm was sold to Hill-Rom in a deal reported to be worth just under £1.5bn at current rates . The Allyns have since turned their focus to investing in private and public markets, and Wrexham have received several large cash injections since their arrival. It's hope their involvement will help Reynolds and McElhenney achieve their dream of taking the club into the Premier League. Man Utd advised to sign £40m Arsenal target in Marcus Rashford swap deal

Manchester United should try to agree a stunning swap deal with Aston Villa involving Marcus Rashford, according to Old Trafford hero Wes Brown. Rashford spent the second-half of last season on loan at Villa Park and has been linked with a permanent move to the Midlands club. Ruben Amorim sanctioned Rashford's departure from Manchester United and is unlikely to offer the England international an olive branch this summer. Rashford is reportedly 'dreaming' of a move to Barcelona after coming close to joining the La Liga giants during the January transfer window. But the 27-year-old is not against returning to Aston Villa, where he largely impressed and enjoyed playing under Unai Emery. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. Villa have been told Rashford will cost £40m this summer and the club are currently weighing up a proposal after missing out on Champions League football on the final day of the season. With Aston Villa likely to renew talks with Manchester United, Brown has advised his former club to enquire into the possibility of signing Ollie Watkins as part of the deal. Amorim is determined to sign a new No. 9 this summer and Watkins, who has scored 87 goals in 223 appearances for Villa, could be a cheaper option than Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko. Watkins was heavily linked with a move away from Villa Park in January after Arsenal made a surprise £40m bid but the 29-year-old ended up staying put. United were keen to sign Liam Delap before he joined Chelsea for £30m but Brown believes Watkins would be an even better option than the former Ipswich Town forward. 'Manchester United need a striker who has goals and although Liam Delap might not get you 20 just yet, he is a great player and has all the attributes to be a success,' Brown told BoyleSports. 'Personally, having Rasmus Hojlund up front on his own looked very difficult for him, he got a lot of stick and looked to have no back up whatsoever. 'He cannot be left in that position again because it's not fair on him, Chido Obi came in who is another young player, but United have to get a striker this summer. 'Marcus Rashford will be a difficult permanent signing for Aston Villa, as there are contractual obligations and a certain level of money that he wants. 'Therefore, I'm not sure it will be beneficial for Villa to sign Marcus or if it is even a possibility. However, one thing is for sure, Rashford will bring value and talent to any team he is playing for. 'Signing Rashford is a lot easier to say than to actually get done, but if he did sign for Villa, he would be fantastic for them as he has been since January.' Speaking to Metro 'Delap would've been a good player for United, but I'd go for experience. Manchester United need a striker and Ollie Watkins has shown us that he can do that in the Premier League. 'Would Aston Villa swap Watkins for Marcus Rashford? I'm not sure because they still trust Watkins and would need to find a big replacement. 'They would want a striker who can get 20 goals and those are hard to come by. Look at United and how Rasmus Hojlund has struggled, but a striker like Watkins would be perfect for United.' Rashford has made more than 400 appearances for boyhood club Manchester United but a permanent move away from Old Trafford appears to suit all parties. Five-time title winner Brown added: 'Marcus Rashford is going to have to start playing really well wherever he goes, first of all. 'He's done well at Aston Villa, he's got his head back in the game. But he still has two years on his contract at United. More Trending 'If he is looking to move, he would obviously want a big club and Barcelona would be ideal. But it's a lot of money. If the club is looking to get rid of him, they're probably wanting to get paid as well. 'It's not an easy one to sort out, talking from my heart, I think it would be brilliant if Ruben Amorim and Marcus could sort things out. 'When he's on form, it's a player United have really missed. I hope they can sort it out in a way that everybody gets what they want. 'For Marcus personally, he just needs to get his head down and play some football now. Hopefully this gets sorted out sooner rather than later.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The 27-year-old was told he could leave the Portuguese capital for an overall fee of £59million, with £51m of that figure being paid up front. But Portuguese newspaper Record claims Sporting have had a change of heart and won't part with Gyokeres' services unless they receive £67m. Gyokeres, who is wanted by Manchester United, is reportedly irate with the club's U-turn and feels like they have betrayed him.
