Liverpool are on the verge of confirming Florian Wirtz as a Reds player.
The Merseysiders lifted the Premier League title at the weekend – Liverpool's 20th English title in all – with manager Arne Slot suggesting that after a meagre first summer in charge in which the club only brought in Federico Chiesa, there would be transfer activity in the coming weeks.
'We didn't do a lot, and that makes it maybe even more special to win it this season,' Slot said in his post-match press conference. 'Now we will see if the team needs. We can do things better already by ourselves without adding any players. But if we can then we will definitely do so.'
After Wirtz' parents were spotted in the UK eyeing up a new house ahead of a move, it was reported that the Reds' hierarchy had approved the decision to break the club's transfer record for the no.10.
Virgil van Dijk still holds the all-time transfer record at Anfield, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claiming in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that Liverpool's first bid for Wirtz was in excess of €100 million.
Now, German publication BILD have reported via Sport Witness that Wirtz is set to move to the Premier League, while calling the whole saga an 'embarrassment' for Bayern Munich.
Bayern legend and former FourFourTwo columnist Lothar Matthaus has shared his thoughts, calling the imminent deal 'painful' for Die Roten's honorary president Uli Hoeness, who has gone on record to state the club's interest in Wirtz.
'This is a defeat for Bayern, and for Uli Hoeness personally, certainly the most painful in the transfer market in recent times: he had repeatedly stated that Wirtz was their absolute dream player, and that Bayern would pull out all the stops to sign him,' Matthaus says.
'Bayern is simply not the no.1. The Premier League, with its quality at the top and its breadth, is the best league in the world, with great intensity and pace.'
Wirtz is ranked at no.3 in FourFourTwo's list of the best attacking midfielders in the world right now, and in addition to him joining the Premier League champions, moves for Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong are also in the works.
The playmaker is valued at €140m by Transfermarkt.

Ex-Tory minister to advise Royal Mail's billionaire Czech owner

The Czech billionaire who has taken over Royal Mail has hired a former Conservative minister to advise him on his business interests. Greg Hands, who served as trade minister before losing his seat in last summer's election, will take up the role of special adviser to Daniel Kretinsky. Mr Kretinsky's EP Group said Mr Hands would provide strategic counsel focused on regulatory and market developments in the UK and Germany. It said the appointment would help the company to 'expand its portfolio across both countries, aligning with the company's commitment to secure and sustainable energy solutions'. It comes just weeks after Mr Kretinsky secured his £3.6bn takeover of Royal Mail in a deal that resulted in the postal service falling into foreign ownership for the first time in its 500-year history. In addition to Royal Mail, EP UK owns a number of energy assets in the UK, including a gas-fired power plant in Stallingborough and the South Humber Bank station, both in Lincolnshire. EP has enjoyed surging profits in recent years thanks to market turmoil sparked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It is also one of a handful of energy companies to have cashed in millions of pounds when Britain's wind farms are turned off because of congestion on the grid. Mr Kretinsky said: 'We are delighted to welcome Greg Hands to EP Group. His deep understanding of the UK and German business and energy landscapes, coupled with his extensive experience in government and international trade, will be invaluable as we navigate the evolving sectors in these key markets. 'Greg has unique capabilities for the job, including fluency in German and good Czech, and understands many of our markets very well.' Mr Hands said: 'I have known Daniel Kretinsky for a long time, and I know that EP Group has a strong track record in energy and infrastructure. 'I look forward to contributing to its continued growth and commitment to energy security and sustainable energy solutions in these regions.' While Mr Hands's role appears to be focused on Mr Kretinsky's energy assets, the appointment comes at a time when much of the billionaire's focus is likely to be on Royal Mail. He has outlined plans to invest heavily in parcels as he attempts to transform Royal Mail into a modern logistics giant. But he will also be required to navigate discussions with ministers and regulators over the future of Royal Mail's universal service obligations, which require it to deliver six days a week at a uniform price. Bosses have argued that stringent rules have left the company financially unsustainable amid a sharp decline in letter sending. Last month Ofcom said Royal Mail had missed its delivery targets in the latest financial year, raising the prospect of a potential fine for the third year running. The regulator is planning to allow Royal Mail to end second-class mail deliveries on alternate days and Saturdays and to water down its delivery targets. However, the company is still disputing so-called 'tail of the mail' back-up targets, which it argues will add 'significant' costs and further push up prices. Mr Kretinsky, who also owns a major stake in Dutch postal service PostNL, has already made a number of legally binding commitments – including maintaining Saturday deliveries for first-class letters, protecting the Royal Mail brand and keeping the company's headquarters and tax base in the UK – to help ease concerns about the deal. International Distribution Services (IDS), Royal Mail's parent company, on Monday confirmed its delisting from the London Stock Exchange and the resignation of a number of board members, including Keith Williams, the chairman. The Communication Workers Union, which represents postal employees, said the departures were 'welcome news' for staff across the UK. It said: 'Led by chairman Keith Williams, the previously senior leadership team have overseen the gross mismanagement of one of the UK's most important companies, they have destroyed the service provided to millions of customers and businesses and they have callously targeted their own workforce in the attempt to create a low wage, gig economy-style employer. 'Keith Williams and many of his colleagues represent everything that is wrong with modern business leaders: paid and rewarded for failure whilst having zero vision.' Mr Williams has argued that EP Group's takeover offer was fair and that the commitments 'should ensure that IDS continues to deliver the key elements of the universal service in the UK and protect the interests of the workforce'. Martin Seidenberg, the IDS chief executive, and Michael Snape, the IDS chief financial officer, will continue in their respective roles and remain on the board. Ultra-Rare BMW 507 For Sale With Eye-Popping Pricetag

You can never go wrong with a vintage BMW. The German automaker's classic examples have a special way of combining slim bodylines and a svelte silhouette with sheer, menacing performance under the hood. This 1959 BMW 5078 Series II on Bring a Trailer is a perfect example of what I mean. When US importer Max Hoffman suggested that BMW design as mid-level sports car for the North American market, BMW replied with the 507. Featuring hand-built aluminum bodywork styled by Albrecht von Goertz, the 507 debuted in 1955 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City before entering production in late 1956. In 1957, the Series II debuted with a smaller fuel tank relocated from behind the seats to inside the trunk to prevent fumes from entering the cabin. This particular example, Chassis 70185, is one of only 252 built during the model's three years of production and was completed on October 6, 1958 as a Feather White car before being delivered new on October 31, 1958, to Autohaus H. Bäte KG in Hannover, Germany. The car reportedly underwent a refurbishment around 2012 that included a repaint in its current shade of Coral Red and a refinishing of its hardtop in an ivory color. The 507 was then acquired in 2022 by German specialists Arthur Bechtel Classic Motors, who re-trimmed the interior in tan leather. What sets this particular BMW 507 apart from others is its ivory hardtop that can be installed when the beige convertible top is not in use. Hardtops were optional equipment at the time and were hand-built to fit each car's hand-built bodywork, making them particularly rare and special accessories to own. Under the hood is a 3,168cc V8 with an aluminum block and cylinder heads as well as twin Zenith carburetors mated to a four-speed manual transmission. This 507 sits on 16" Rudge wheels wrapped in 6.00-16 Michelin Pilote X tires with Dunlop front disc and rear drum brakes behind them. The cabin still wears its tan leather and sports a contrasting ivory steering wheel and shift knob alongside a Becker Mexico radio. The odometer shows around 33,000 kilometers (~21,000 miles), with 25 of those being added by the current owner. The auction ends in 9 days with a current bid of $1,000,000, so it's unlikely that you and I will be able to afford such a beauty. Considering that it was purchased from a collection by its current owner in January 2025 and they only added 25 miles since, this poor thing suffers from a severe lack of being driven. This isn't an uncommon occurence with cars of this rarity and value, but it's also not an excuse. I won't go on a tangent about why driving your cars is the right thing to do, but I sure hope that the new owner feels the same way. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Trump administration pushes for trade deals

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The Trump administration is pressuring trade partners to make a deal with them as tariff threats loom. Right now, President Donald Trump's planned tariffs on dozens of foreign countries are paused, but they're set to take effect on July 8th unless the countries strike a deal with the U.S. Adding urgency to the negotiations the White House says the U.S. sent letters to all of its trading partners asking for the countries to submit their best trade offers by Wednesday. 'This letter, was simply to remind these countries that the deadline is approaching. And the president expects good deals and we are on track for that. I will emphasize,' White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said. The White House says U.S. leaders are actively involved in negotiations and optimistic about the outcomes. 'Our team who is deeply involved in this sees these deals moving in the right direction,' Leavitt said. On Tuesday U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer met with EU trade negotiators on the sidelines of an international conference in Paris. German Economics and Energy Minister Katherina Reiche says the ongoing trade turmoil is hurting economies across the globe. 'We all hope and we all do our best to end the conflicts as soon as possible,' Reiche said. Meanwhile, trade negotiations between the U.S. and China have hit a snag with each country accusing the other of violating their temporary tariff truce. The White House says President Trump and China's President Xi plan to talk directly about those issues this week. 'There will be a leader-to-leader talk very soon and when that happens, as always, we will let you know,' Leavitt said. Separately President Trump is moving ahead with a plan to double tariffs on steel and aluminum with an executive order imposing a 50% tax on those imported materials starting Wednesday. 'This is a president who doesn't just talk the talk. He walks the walk to and he's delivering on his promises to bolster our steel and aluminum Industries in this country and to protect those jobs,' Leavitt said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
