Club World Cup ‘Harms La Liga': Tebas Warns of Madrid Fixture Chaos
Club World Cup 'Harms La Liga': Tebas Warns of Madrid Fixture Chaos originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The FIFA Club World Cup kicks off in days, with Inter Miami facing Al Ahly in the opener on Saturday at the Hard Rock Stadium. The event kicks off a month-long tournament with 32 clubs from around the world. This newly formatted competition has had a mixed reaction from soccer fans around the world. Advertisement Many fans dreamed of watching the worlds top clubs face off around the world have the chance to play each other, but others find it unnecessary to bring this competition to life. Formatted like the World Cup for national teams, the Club World Cup will provide significant prize money for the participating teams, and more will be secured depending on each team's performance. Only two La Liga will compete in the tournament, which are the Madrid clubs Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. There are concerns in Spain due to the scheduling of the competition, as La Liga will soon unveil the league's schedule for next season, which starts in August. The Club World Cup will start on June 14 and end on July 13. La Liga President Javier Tebas spoke to COPE and was asked his opinion of the Madrid clubs participating in the competition. Club World Cup Criticized by Tebas Tebas doesn't understand the point of having the competition other than being a financial benefit for clubs participating in it. The La Liga president mentions how it could negatively impact the league itself. Javier Tebas: "The Club World Cup is a complete nonsense. This model harms the ecosystem of LaLiga. And then there is the other issue, when will Real Madrid and Atlético be able to start the league matches." Advertisement With Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid being top clubs, it is possible for them to reach the latest rounds of the Club World Cup. The quarterfinals of the competition will be played on July 4 and 5. Anything past that date seems too late in preparation for the upcoming soccer season, which typically starts in mid-August. Along with that, rest time for players will be significantly reduced. Tebas is remains firmly opposed to the Club World Cup and does not want to change calendar dates for the new season. He will decide whether Real Madrid and/or Atletico Madrid will rest in the first matchweek. Javier Tebas: "We have to see and study it. It cannot be that we are constantly changing our calendars for other competitions, FIFA expects all leagues to adapt without consulting us. A Madrid derby in the first matchday is impossible." Three days ago, La Liga announced that the 2025-26 season league will start on the weekend of 17th August. The performance of the Madrid teams could result in game delays. What if Real Madrid and/or Atletico reach the quarterfinals of the CWC? COPE reports that the Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) has spoken with Real Madrid's Dani Carvajal and Atletico Madrid's Koke on a potential delay in the upcoming La Liga season. Advertisement If Real Madrid and/or Atlético Madrid reach the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup, they may start their La Liga season a week after the scheduled start of the season. It could be as late as August 24 that either or both clubs could play their first league game of the new season if they become the last eight teams of the Club World Cup this summer. Who will Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid play in the CWC? Real Madrid is in Group H with Al Hilal, Pachuca, and RB Salzburg. They will make their debut on June 18 when they take on Al Hilal at the Hard Rock Stadium. Atletico Madrid is in Group B along with Botafogo, Seattle Sounders, and PSG. They will make their debut on Sunday, June 15, against the newly crowned European Champions, PSG. Barcelona captain very angry over his current situation, seeks meeting with Flick, Laporta
Barcelona could officially sign their goalkeeper for the next ten years tomorrow as the club prepare to trigger the release clause of Joan Garcia and lure him from Espanyol. The situation, however, is anything but pretty on their side of Catalonia especially with the Marc-Andre ter Stegen situation blowing up out of control. Advertisement The German goalkeeper, long seen as an untouchable figure in the team, is now being ousted from his post and he clearly has not taken the developments well. Landed in Barcelona in anger As relayed in a recent report by AS, Ter Stegen landed in Barcelona on Sunday after completing his duty with the German national team where he made a strong statement with his performances. The report adds that the goalkeeper arrived in a furious mood and wants to meet with Hansi Flick and Joan Laporta to express his displeasure over how the saga has been handled and how it is an open campaign against him. Ter Stegen is unhappy. (Photo by) Barcelona have indeed not handled the Ter Stegen as well as they could have, but the fact remains that it was long coming and not completely unexpected after how he allegedly expressed his sense of entitlement ahead of the Inter Milan game. Advertisement The 33-year-old club captain continues to cite his contract with the club, his performance in recent days and his long CV as the team's first-choice goalkeeper as his case to stay and fight for minutes. While it is certainly a possibility, the club hope the FIFA World Cup factor pushes him to leave for a lack of regular minutes could see him lose his starting place in the national team. With both parties firm on their demands, the saga is set to run deep into the transfer window. Only time will tell the outcome of the German situation.

Minor given one-year stadium ban after racist abuse of Barcelona's Lamine Yamal in El Clasico
A minor has been given a one-year stadium ban for directing racist abuse towards Barcelona's Lamine Yamal during El Clasico in October. The individual has also been given '30 hours of socio-educational tasks', according to La Liga. Videos from the game on social media appeared to show Yamal, 17, being subjected to racist abuse from Real Madrid fans in the stands at the Bernabeu while preparing to take a corner and after his goal in Barca's 4-0 win against rivals Real Madrid. Advertisement La Liga also reported instances of alleged racist abuse towards Barcelona's Raphinha and Ansu Fati to the national police. Barcelona, Madrid and La Liga all condemned the abuse, with the league adding that it would 'request lip expertise on the reported images in order to identify the insults made' against Yamal, Raphinha and Fati. Three people were subsequently arrested in November for what La Liga described as 'violating the dignity and moral integrity of two footballers'. In a statement on Tuesday, La Liga said: 'The minor identified, following the complaint by La Liga as one of the perpetrators of the racist insults, has admitted the facts and accepted, within the framework of the proceedings of the Office of the Public Prosecution for Minors, the imposition of 30 hours of socio-educational tasks.' The individual is prohibited from entering 'any of the stadiums where official football competitions are held for a period of one year'. La Liga also requested that the individual provide a written apology to Yamal. Madrid confirmed after the game that it had identified those responsible for the 'deplorable and despicable insults' before 'appropriate disciplinary and judicial action can be taken.' Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, who has also been subjected to racist abuse in Spain, condemned the incident on social media. — Vini Jr. (@vinijr) October 27, 2024 'Real Madrid strongly condemns any kind of behaviour involving racism, xenophobia or violence in football and sport, and deeply regrets the insults that a few fans uttered last night in one of the corners of the stadium,' the club said in a statement at the time. Last month, five supporters were given suspended prison sentences and fined for racist chants directed at Vinicius Jr during a match against Real Valladolid in a landmark ruling that saw the individuals convicted of a hate crime. It was the first time that racist chanting in a stadium had met this definition in a Spanish court. ()
