'His Health Is Absolutely Fine': Is Mamata Banerjee Sceptical About Dhankhar's Resignation?
Jagdeep Dhankhar's longtime political adversary, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed scepticism about his surprise resignation citing health issues and has declared him 'a healthy man".
While Banerjee said she is unwilling to comment on Dhankhar's sudden exit, she said she believed that his condition is 'absolutely fine". Known for her frequent run-ins with him when he was Bengal governor from 2019 to 2022, she made the cryptic remarks during a press conference at the state secretariat Nabanna.
She, however, like other opposition parties hinted there could be more to the development than what meets the eye.
'Political parties cannot decide why Mr Dhankhar resigned. I have no comments on the issue," Banerjee said. 'Let us watch. He is a healthy man. I think his health is absolutely fine."
The chief minister's comments came amid a political firestorm over Dhankhar's decision to quit the post of vice president of India. Many in the opposition claimed that it was 'totally unexpected" and possibly driven by factors beyond the official line of 'prioritising health care".
The usual effusive praise showered on an occupant of a high office on his departure was missing from the ruling alliance's side, an indication that the government was probably happy to see him go. It was the opposition, which had signed a notice to impeach him last year for his alleged biases, that had nice words for him.
This was including the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) – a party that not only has a troubled history with Dhankhar but has since repeatedly mocked him and called him a 'government stooge".
'Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation. Is health the only reason? If so, get well soon. Otherwise, curiosity remains," said TMC leader Kunal Ghosh on X, a man known to be a bitter critic of Dhankhar in his gubernatorial role.
Speaking to reporters later, Ghosh said: 'We do not wish to comment on this, as our top leadership is observing the situation. He has cited health reasons, so we wish him good health."
Another senior TMC leader, Sushmita Dev said she was quite 'surprised" by Dhankhar's sudden decision. 'I did see some news that he was not keeping well. But one did not imagine that it was serious enough for him to step down. I thought he would go on leave, recover and come back, so I was quite surprised by his decision," she told a news channel.
WHY DO DHANKHAR AND MAMATA SHARE A TENSE RELATIONSHIP?
Dhankhar was a harsh critic of the Mamata Banerjee administration during his tenure as governor in the state and had often been at the centre of confrontations with the ruling party before being elevated as Vice President in 2022.
The two share a deeply adversarial and politically charged relationship. In fact, some of their spats – often public and on social media – got so ugly that Banerjee even blocked him on X in January 2022, then known as Twitter, accusing him unethical and abusive behaviour.
Banerjee has often described him as a 'BJP mouthpiece" while repeatedly seeking his removal, alleging obstruction in routine government processes. Despite an occasional attempt at a truce, their relationship was fraught with tension and confrontational to the point that it lasted even after he resigned as governor to assume the office of vice president. While presiding over the Rajya Sabha, too, he had been the target of TMC members in the House, who resolutely believed him to be politically partisan.

Dhankhar made 'unscheduled visit' to Rashtrapati Bhavan before announcing resignation
Before his surprise resignation, former vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar made an "unscheduled visit" to the Rashtrapati Bhavan late on Monday evening, official sources said. Dhankhar met President Murmu around 9 pm on Monday and handed over his resignation to her. Half an hour later, he made his resignation letter public on X, they said. "To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution," Dhankhar said in his letter. Dhankhar, 74, assumed office in August 2022 and his term would have ended in August 2027. The resignation of Dhankhar, who was also the ex officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha, came on the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X, saying, "Jagdeep Dhankhar has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health." Meanwhile, the Congress sought an explanation from the government after Dhankhar resigned unexpectedly, citing health reasons. Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said there were 'far deeper reasons' behind the move, while the party's deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, asked the Centre to clarify if it had prior knowledge of the resignation. Several other Opposition leaders also expressed surprise and scepticism over the abrupt move, with some suggesting there may be more to the decision than meets the eye.

Mamata Banerjee Questions Health Claims Behind Jagdeep Dhankhar's Abrupt Vice Presidential Exit
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has cast doubt on the official explanation for Jagdeep Dhankhar's unexpected departure from the Vice Presidency, suggesting the former constitutional officer's health claims may not tell the complete story. During a press conference at the state secretariat Nabanna on Tuesday, the Trinamool Congress leader expressed her belief that Dhankhar remains in good health despite his cited medical reasons for resignation. Banerjee deliberately avoided direct commentary on the resignation itself but made pointed observations about Dhankhar's physical condition. She characterized him as "a healthy man" whose health appears "absolutely fine," implying that other factors may have driven his decision to step down from India's second-highest constitutional office. The West Bengal leader's skepticism carries particular weight given her turbulent history with Dhankhar during his previous role as the state's Governor. Their relationship was marked by persistent conflicts, formal correspondence disputes, and mutual accusations, with Banerjee frequently criticizing Dhankhar for allegedly exceeding his constitutional authority while serving in Raj Bhavan. Banerjee's concerns reflect broader opposition skepticism about the circumstances surrounding Dhankhar's departure. Her cryptic suggestion to "watch" developments indicates expectations that more information about the resignation's true motivations may emerge over time. The Chief Minister's position aligns with growing opposition criticism of the resignation's timing and rationale. Several political leaders have questioned whether health concerns alone could justify such an abrupt departure from constitutional office, particularly given Dhankhar's active participation in parliamentary proceedings just hours before his resignation. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has been particularly vocal in challenging the official narrative, alleging that the resignation was "forced" by government pressure rather than voluntary medical considerations. TMC leaders Kunal Ghosh and Sushmita Dev have similarly expressed surprise at the sudden nature of Dhankhar's decision, questioning whether health issues alone could explain such dramatic action. The resignation makes Dhankhar only the third Vice President in Indian history to leave office mid-term, invoking Article 67(a) of the Constitution in his formal letter to President Droupadi Murmu. His departure has created unprecedented constitutional questions and highlighted tensions between different branches of government. Opposition leaders' collective skepticism suggests broader concerns about institutional independence and the pressures facing constitutional officers in contemporary Indian politics. Their questioning of the health narrative indicates belief that political factors, rather than medical ones, may have ultimately determined Dhankhar's fate as Vice President.
