The Royal Armed Forces have taken delivery of their first batch of Akinci drones, produced by the Turkish manufacturer Baykar. According to the FAR Maroc Forum, these advanced drones are expected to be operational shortly.
The Akinci drone represents a significant leap in military technology, particularly within Turkish defense innovations. This unmanned aerial vehicle boasts a 24-hour flight endurance and a range of 6,000 kilometers, with the capability to carry up to 1,500 kg of weaponry.
This acquisition underscores the growing collaboration between the Royal Air Forces and Baykar. The Turkish company plans to establish a military-industrial unit in the Benslimane region, dedicated to assembling and manufacturing a special type of drone not yet available, as reported by the same source.
Baykar's president, Selçuk Bayraktar, who is also the son-in-law of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, attended the 2024 Marrakech Air Show from October 30 to November 2. During the event, he showcased the Bayraktar TB3 drone and engaged in discussions with Morocco's Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour. Since September 2021, the FAR have maintained a fleet of Bayraktar TB2 drones.
Additionally, the Turkish defense firm Aselsan has expressed interest in entering the Moroccan market, further indicating the strengthening ties between Turkish defense companies and Morocco.

Hakim Ziyech Faces $720,000 Tax Debt in Turkiye After Leaving Galatasaray

Rabat – Moroccan footballer Hakim Ziyech is facing a significant tax debt in Turkiye after ending his time with Galatasaray. Turkish outlet Milliyet reported that, according to a public notice issued by Turkish authorities on June 28, Ziyech owes approximately $720,000 in unpaid taxes. The debt includes $644,000 in main tax and about $76,000 in late payment penalties, all linked to his time playing for the Istanbul-based club. Ziyech left Galatasaray during the winter transfer window for the 2023–2024 season. The Istanbul Tax Office tried to deliver the official notice directly to Ziyech, but he was not found at his registered address, added the report. Because of this, the authorities published the notice online and in four national newspapers. If Ziyech does not respond within one month, the notice will be considered officially delivered under Turkish law. Milliyet reported that Galatasaray officials explained that Ziyech had signed a contract based on a 'net salary' agreement, meaning the club was responsible for paying his taxes. As a result, Galatasaray Sportif AŞ, the club's corporate branch, is expected to cover the full amount. Ziyech, who previously played for Chelsea, had a difficult spell at Galatasaray due to injuries and limited appearances. Though he has moved on from the Turkish league, the financial matters from his time in Istanbul continue to follow him.

Morocco, Turkiye Sign Transport Cooperation Agreements in Istanbul

Tangier — Morocco and Turkiye are joining forces to strengthen cooperation on road safety and maritime corridors. The two countries signed two cooperation agreements on Friday in Istanbul to foster bilateral ties in the transport sector. Morocco's Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh and Turkiye's Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu signed the memoranda of understanding (MOU) during an international transport forum. Road safety technology partnership The first agreement between the two countries covers technological cooperation in road safety, with Morocco aiming to benefit from Turkiye's experience in securing freight transport by trucks. 'Morocco is interested in the Turkish experience in securing the transport of goods via trucks,' Kayouh told Morocco's official news agency MAP. Maritime fleet development The second memorandum supports Morocco's study to strengthen its national maritime fleet, based on Turkiye's significant experience in maritime navigation and shipbuilding. 'Turkiye has accumulated important experience in maritime navigation and shipbuilding,' the minister explained. International transport forum Morocco is participating in this three-day international event, from June 27-29, with a delegation led by Kayouh, including several directors and officials from the transport and road safety sector. Initiated by the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and the World Bank support, the event brings together high-level political decision-makers, ministers, representatives from international organizations and global financial institutions, industry and private sector leaders, and expert specialists. Focus on global transport networks The forum serves as a platform for strategic discussions on developing and improving international transport corridors. Beyond enhancing physical connectivity, the discussions cover key areas including sustainable development, green economy transition, and expanded use of renewable energy sources. Participants also explore digitization and artificial intelligence potential, innovative practices, effective financing solutions, and intensified regional cooperation on a global scale. Morocco's transport and maritime situation The signing of the MOUs comes at a time when the North African country's maritime transport fleet is experiencing a dramatic decline to only 17 vessels, down from approximately 70 ships in the 1960s and 1970s. Morocco's Ministry of Transport and Logistics has already initiated a study to reinvigorate the country's maritime capabilities, aiming to foster its logistical sovereignty and ease citizens' maritime transportation. To enhance the country's transport sector, the ministry has recently launched a comprehensive reform plan, focused on improving public safety, upgrading infrastructure, and enhancing service quality across various transport modes. The reform includes the renewal of the intercity bus fleet, professional training for drivers, and support for the rural and tourism transport sectors, as well as the car rental industry. Turkish Airlines Marks 20 Years in Morocco and Long-Standing ONMT Partnership

Casablanca – In a celebration blending elegance, hospitality, and ambition, Turkish Airlines marked 20 years of operations in Morocco last night with a high-profile event at the Four Seasons Hotel in Casablanca. What may have looked like an anniversary celebration was, in essence, the launch of a new chapter in Moroccan tourism. The national flag carrier of Turkiye, which began direct flights to Casablanca in March 2005 with four weekly routes, now connects Morocco to Istanbul through 7 weekly flights to Casablanca and 9 to Marrakech. The scale and success of this connection were evident not only in numbers but in tone, as the event featured heartfelt tributes, music, and most importantly a strategic alliance with the Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT). 'We are very excited today to celebrate this event with our partners, with our agencies, and with the representatives of tourism in Morocco,' said Sayfullah Ilyas, General Manager of Turkish Airlines Casablanca, in an interview with Morocco World News. 'It's a great pleasure for us to be a representative in Morocco. We want to extend our operations here, and therefore we signed this partnership with ONMT today. With their support, we will promote Morocco more through our international channels.' With this new, mutually beneficial agreement, Turkish Airlines and ONMT aim to strengthen cooperation and elevate Morocco's visibility on a global scale. This includes joint campaigns, collaborative projects, and sustained partnerships to drive tourism growth and diversify Morocco's tourist source markets. For Achraf Fayda, Director General of ONMT, the partnership couldn't be more timely. 'Exactly the type of partnership Morocco and Turkiye need,' he said, pointing to Istanbul's status as a global hub and its value in creating new development basins outside Europe. '80% of tourists visiting Morocco still come from Europe.' Indeed, the numbers speak volumes. Morocco welcomed 17.4 million tourists in 2024, with projections of 26 million by 2030. Meanwhile, Moroccan airports served 32 million passengers in 2024, with 70 million projected by the end of the decade, a leap that positions aviation and tourism as core pillars of Morocco's development strategy, particularly ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2030. 'We made the right choice,' Fayda said. 'This is a long-term partnership.' At the heart of the event, both literally and symbolically, was the legacy of Ibn Battuta – the Moroccan explorer whose journeys embody Turkish Airlines' marketing campaign slogan: 'Widen Your World.' Ilyas reminded guests of the explorer's admiration for Turkish hospitality, saying, 'Ibn Battuta once thought God gathered all the world's beauty in one place.' But, it was Morocco that inspired his journey. 'What pushed Ibn Battuta to discover the world?' Ilyas asked, 'It was the beauty of Morocco, the one place where you can experience six or seven countries in one.' That sentiment now lives on in action. To celebrate its 20th anniversary in Morocco, Turkish Airlines launched a 20% discount campaign covering 150+ destinations in 20 countries, and a 15% discount for over 50,000 Moroccans living in Turkiye returning home. The airline also announced a giveaway of 20 free tickets to destinations once visited by Ibn Battuta on their social media. Hikmet Mesut Turkseven, Turkish Airlines Vice President for Africa, added context to the airline's broader strategy: 'Turkish Airlines connects cultures, enterprises, and families… Casablanca is a critical point between Europe, Asia, and Africa.' The airline now flies to 353 destinations in 131 countries and is eyeing expansion to a fleet of 813 aircraft, aiming to serve 171 million passengers annually by 2033. That scale brings weight. Mustafa Ilker Kilic, Turkiye's ambassador to Morocco, highlighted how 250,000 Moroccans visited Turkiye last year, while 60,000 Turks visited Morocco. He also reaffirmed the diplomatic and cultural ties between both nations, noting Turkiye's involvement in cultural events like the Fez Festival of World Sacred Music. Still, global tensions are rising. In response to ongoing flight disruptions, Ilyas reassured Moroccan passengers: 'We will continue our Casablanca and Marrakesh flights as usual. There is no cancellation for now. But we recommend passengers stay updated through our social media and official website.' The evening concluded with Turkish music, and a musical performance by Moroccan pop star Douzi, alongside a tombola where seven lucky attendees won various prizes. It was the perfect end to a night that not only celebrated the past but hinted at a more connected and collaborative future. For Morocco, this celebration wasn't just about Turkish Airlines, it was about growth, positioning, and the power of strategic partnerships to redefine a nation's touristic aspirations.
