Defamation case against Fox News highlights role of its hosts in promoting 2020 election falsehoods
NEW YORK (AP) — Court papers in a voting technology company's $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News point to Maria Bartiromo, Lou Dobbs and Jeanine Pirro as leaders in spreading false stories about election fraud in the weeks after Democrat Joe Biden's victory over President Donald Trump in 2020. Arguments for summary judgment by Smartmatic were filed in lightly redacted form this week at the New York Supreme Court. It's like a bad rerun for Fox: Similar revelations about its conduct following the 2020 election came in a lawsuit by another company falsely accused of doctoring votes, Dominion Voting Systems. Fox agreed to pay Dominion $787 million in a 2023 settlement after the judge found it was 'CRYSTAL CLEAR' that none of the claims against the voting system company were true. In short: Fox let Donald Trump aides spread conspiracy theories despite knowing they were false because it was what their viewers wanted to hear. Fox was trying to hold on to viewers who were angry at the network for saying Biden had won the election. Fox said it was covering a newsworthy story. It accuses the London-based company, which had only Los Angeles County as a client for the 2020 election, of exaggerating its claims of damages in the hope of receiving a financial windfall. Pirro now working in the second Trump administration The focus on Pirro is noteworthy because the former Fox personality now serves in Trump's second administration as U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C. Smartmatic, relying on emails and text messages revealed as part of the case, said Pirro was using her position as a Fox host in 2020 to help Trump and persuade him to pardon her ex-husband, Albert Pirro, who was convicted of conspiracy and tax evasion. Trump pardoned him before leaving office in 2021. In a text to then-Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel in September 2020, Pirro said, 'I'm the No. 1 watched show on news cable all weekend. I work so hard for the President and the party,' Smartmatic said in court papers. One of her own producers, Jerry Andrews, called Pirro a 'reckless maniac,' Smartmatic said. He texted after one of her shows in November that it was 'rife (with) conspiracy theories and bs and is yet another example of why this woman should never be on live television." The court papers said Pirro also suggested 'evidence' of supposed fraud to Trump lawyer Sidney Powell that she could use on a television appearance — material that also was spread by Bartiromo. Bartiromo still works at Fox, and in 2020 had shows on both the news channel and Fox Business Network. The court papers uncovered messages showing her desire to help Trump: 'I am very worried. Please please please overturn this. Bring the evidence, I know you can,' she texted to Powell. Dobbs, whose business show was canceled by Fox in February 2021, texted to Powell four days after the election, saying 'I'm going to do what I can to help stop what is now a coup d'etat in (its) final days — perhaps moments," a reference to Biden's victory. Dobbs died in 2024. A central figure in Fox's 'pivot' Smartmatic portrayed Pirro as a central figure in Fox's 'pivot' to deemphasize Biden's victory because it angered Trump fans. Instead, the network found that ratings jumped whenever claims of election fraud were discussed, it said. As in the Dominion case, the discovery process helped Smartmatic find messages and statements that seem embarrassing in retrospect. For example, in early December, Fox's Jesse Watters texted colleague Greg Gutfeld that 'Think of how incredible our ratings would be if Fox went ALL in on STOP THE STEAL.' Fox, in a response to the newly-revealed court papers, pointed to an ongoing corruption case involving Smartmatic and its executives, including a claim by federal prosecutors that it used money from the sale of voting machines to set up a 'slush fund' for bribing foreign officials. 'The evidence shows that Smartmatic's business and reputation were badly suffering long before any claims by President Trump's lawyers on Fox News and that Smartmatic grossly inflated its damage claims to generate headlines and chill free speech,' Fox said. 'Now, in the aftermath of Smartmatic's executives getting indicted for bribery charges, we are eager and ready to continue defending our press freedoms.' Father of Celtics star Jaylen Brown charged with attempted murder in Las Vegas
A man identified by multiple reports as the father of Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a man multiple times. The incident took place on Wednesday night in a parking lot at a park in Las Vegas, as a minor car collision quickly escalated. Court documents at Clark County Detention Center confirm that Quenton M. Brown was arrested on Thursday and charged with attempted murder. Brown reportedly goes by his middle name, Marselles. Brown had his first court appearance on Thursday afternoon, per multiple outlets. Bail was set at $300,000. A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department arrest report obtained by multiple outlets said that the altercation began when the man who was stabbed was sitting in his car with his girlfriend, and an SUV pulled up next to the car. Someone came out of the passenger's side and dinged the driver's side of the other car. The woman told police that her boyfriend got out to check for damage. A man, later identified as Brown, was confrontational, per the report, and a fight ensued. Brown then reportedly walked to the victim and produced an unknown object, before reportedly striking the other man in the back. Per multiple reports, doctors told police that the man suffered stab wounds to his back, upper right chest, a broken right rib that may need surgery and more. The man was described as being in critical condition. The incident took place just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday; Brown was booked sometime Thursday morning. Police wrote in the report that Brown's clothing had blood on it, but that they did not find the knife allegedly used in the stabbing. In an interview with local channel KSNV, Brown's attorney, Arnold Weinstock, said that Brown was "trying to defend himself." Brown told Weinstock that the other person involved in the altercation had a gun and hit Brown on the head with it. That detail was reportedly not in the police report. Weinstock said that he believed that the $300,000 bail was "excessive" but that he expected Brown to be out in the next day or two.

Action News Jax breaks down the City of Jacksonville's top ‘Ticket Takers'
As the Jacksonville City Council spars with the mayor's office over the distribution of the free tickets to games, concerts, and events at city-run venues, Action News Jax is digging into the numbers and revealing the city's top ticket-takers. Among city council members, Councilmember Terrance Freeman (R-Group 1 At-Large) topped the list with 96 requests over the past two years, followed by Councilmember Reggie Gaffney Jr. (D-District 8) at 37, and Councilmember Ju'coby Pittman (D-District 10) at 28. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< In response to making the top three list, all three council members issued statements. 'I've used tickets offered to all 'Council members and shared access with the residence (sic) and distributed to constituents who wouldn't otherwise have access to events. The tickets have been a long-standing practice for Council members. Ticket assess allow me to stay connected with my constituents. If policy changes regarding the distribution of tickets, I will continue to follow policy. 28 tickets were reported and 5 were unused, revised ticket distribution is 23 that were used,' Pittman said. 'It's no secret that my constituents are my top priority. In District 8, a lot of families, kids, teachers, and even first responders don't always get the chance to enjoy events that bring people together. When I request tickets, it's not always for me; it's oftentimes so the people I serve can experience something uplifting and memorable that brings Jacksonville as a whole together, leaving no one out. I believe everyone deserves moments of joy and connection, no matter their circumstances. That's why the number you've received is the number it is. And I wish to continue providing this opportunity to them,' Gaffney Jr. said. 'Blessed to have a large family and over the course of going on 8 years have attended events,' Freeman said. RELATED: City Council requested more than twice as many free city tickets as mayor's office over past 2 years When you factor in requests made by council aides, Freeman remains at the top with 117 tickets over two years, while the ticket reform bill sponsor Councilmember Ron Salem (R-Group 2 At-Large) moves up into second at 97, and Vice President Nick Howland (R-Group 3 At-Large) bumps up to third with 52. Salem and Howland did not comment on the stats. Council President Kevin Carrico (R-District 4) argued many of the requested tickets likely went to constituents. 'This isn't about tit-for-tat at this point on who went to what shows. It's about cleaning it up and making sure that these tickets that are contractually obligated through contracts to come to the city are given to people who deserve to go,' Carrico said. In Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan's Office, Chief Administrative Officer Karen Bowling led the pack with 64 tickets requested over the past two years, followed by her Deputy CAO Kelli O'Leary with 53, and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs Brittany Norris came in third with 28 tickets. 'This practice began many years ago for economic development efforts and building relationships with community members. That remains true today,' the mayor's office told Action News Jax in a statement. 'It's part of the mayor's job to be an ambassador and represent the city. It's also useful for those who oversee event venue operations to evaluate the citizen experience and make it better.' 'Are you giving them away to lobbyists? You know, who is getting them? What's happening? It's a bad look all around, and you know, maybe this is something good that could come from some middle school back and forth between council and the administration for once,' Binder said. Both the Mayor's Office and Council President Carrico said they're open to introducing more transparency and accountability into the ticket request process and support prohibiting elected officials from personally using the tickets on themselves.
