Sonia O'Sullivan less than impressed with Rhasidat Adeleke's World Champs withdrawal

Extra.ie10 hours ago
Monday night saw disappointment for fans of Rhasidat Adeleke as she ruled herself out of the World Championships in Tokyo next month after what she called 'a setback' in her recovery from injury.
The Tallaght runner was already forced to withdraw from the National championships in Santry last month with an injury and hasn't raced since the Diamond League meeting in London in July, where she ran 22.95seconds in the 200m.
In an Instagram post Adeleke explained that 'following yet another recent roadblock, I'm saddened to share that I'm unable to finish out this season.
I'll take this time to heal, recover and do what's necessary so I can show up next season as my best self, mind and body.' It was disappointing news for all involved, but it seems like Sonia O'Sullivan hasn't taken it well.
The Olympic silver medalist wrote about the Adeleke situation in her Irish Times column and she didn't seem best pleased with the way she has conducted herself.
'My first concern for Rhasidat Adeleke right now is that she's not being entirely open or honest' O'Sullivan wrote.
'Not just with herself but with some of the people around her,' she continued.
The main crux of O'Sullivan's argument is that while Adeleke may not be 100% to run in the individual 400m, she could've been fit enough to run in the women's 4x400m relay, which Ireland finished fourth in the Paris Olympics just last year.
'Maybe another option for Tokyo would have been to just focus on the relay when she realised her individual 400m aspirations weren't working out. If she had the right mindset. That makes you realise, too, the relay will never be a high priority for her. Olympian Sonia O'Sullivan during the Cork City Sports meet at MTU Arena in Cork. Photo by Sam Barnes/Sportsfile
'But I think she could have considered that, taken a lot of the pressure off that way. Again, maybe people are telling her she's better than the relay.'
O'Sullivan again went after Adeleke's Instagram statement and is unsatisfied with how this whole thing has gone down.
'Without more transparency, it's hard to assess what exactly is going on. Even her posting a message on Instagram on Monday night struck me as odd.' Rhasidat Adeleke. Pic: INPHO/Eric Bellamy
'Adeleke is one of Ireland's most recognised and popular athletes and I don't think putting out a vague message on social media was the best way to deal with her withdrawal from the World Championships in Tokyo.'
There are still several other medal hopefuls in Ireland's roster for Tokyo like Kate O'Connor, Mark English and Sarah Healy.
It all gets underway on September 13 and runs until September 21.

Emotional Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley moved to tears by fans' touching gesture to son Josh after beating cancer

FAN CHANT Emotional Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley moved to tears by fans' touching gesture to son Josh after beating cancer STEPHEN BRADLEY was moved to tears by Shamrock Rovers fans' heartwarming song in honour of his son Josh after he beat cancer. Advertisement On Thursday night, his dad Stephen oversaw Shamrock Rovers shock Santa Clara in their Europa Conference League play-off first leg in the Azores. And after the game, the Hoops fans that had travelled serenaded their beloved gaffer with the chant "There's only one Josh Bradley". The beaming Dubliner put his hand to his heart in gratitude to the gesture before wiping tears from his eyes. And on social media, fans praised the song and the bond between supporters and manager. Advertisement Gavan Reilly said: "This is magnificent. What a week for that family" while a second fan called it a "proud evening". A third said: "The real "beautiful game"" A fourth hailed: "For my English followers, this is the lovely moment tonight as Shamrock Rovers fans sing about their manager Stephen Bradey's 11 year old son Josh, who has beaten cancer after a 3 year battle. "It is indeed the #GreatestLeagueInTheWorld" Advertisement A fifth said: "Absolutely brilliant, f*** the football, a great week for a family that have gone through so much" Heartwarming moment child rings cancer bell for all-clear after three years of treatment And a sixth said: "That's a very, very rich man". Bradley admitted he and his family feel "lucky" after Josh got the all-clear from leukemia. He told the Irish Mirror: "He got his last chemotherapy last week, and then they tell you then that he's free to ring the bell, which is, again special, because ringing the bell signals the end of your treatment. 'He doesn't have to get chemotherapy anymore, so to get that news last week was the best news we've had in three and a half years. Advertisement 'Yesterday, we went in as a family, and all the nurses and all the nurses and doctors that looked after him for the last three and a half years were there, because they're incredible." When quizzed on how Josh has taken everything in, he added: 'He's been really, really excited, really hyper, because he got the news that he was allowed to ring the bell, and that's the end of it. 'So he's been really hyper, and, like I said, excited, looking forward to it, but then yesterday came the emotion of the realisation that he's done, and he rang the bell, and he was really, really emotional, which is to be expected. 'He's very like me, in terms of, he's a deep thinker. He's been holding a lot inside and I think we've seen a lot of that coming up yesterday. 'Then, yesterday evening he was able to go and meet his friends and play a club match, a friendly, and then after the game, he's hyper again, because he's just telling us all his friends, the referee, the coaches made a big thing of him. Advertisement 'There were all different ranges of emotions yesterday, but he's been really hyper, really emotional, and then last night he was just hyper again. 'We understand how lucky we are as a family to be given that opportunity yesterday.'

Hallgrimsson given Sammie Szmodics injury update ahead of World Cup qualifiers after scary collision with Ireland star

Kieran McKenna has given an update on the Irishman FEARED THE WORST Hallgrimsson given Sammie Szmodics injury update ahead of World Cup qualifiers after scary collision with Ireland star SAMMIE SZMODICS is poised to be cleared for international duty - despite a collision with Ireland colleague Gavin Bazunu. That would have ruled him out of Ireland's opening World Cup qualifiers against Hungary and Armenia. Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna said: "We feared it was a break, but X-rays have cleared that. He's got some really heavy bruising there, but he's recovering well." The 29-year-old started all six of Heimir Hallgrímsson's six games in charge but missed the first four Ireland matches of 2025 with an ankle injury. Hallgrímsson will name his squad for the double-header on Tuesday with the fixture against Hungary of particular interest to Szmodics. Szmodics - who qualifies for Ireland through his grandmother - was also eligible for Hungary through his grandfather. Hungary boss Marco Rossi accused the former Blackburn Rovers player or his agent of leaking his approach to him in an effort to stir interest from Ireland. But Szmodics claimed he had never spoken to Hungary and was committed to Ireland, despite withdrawing from several squads before winning his first cap against Belgium in March last year.

USA star Ilona Maher mulling move to WWE after Rugby World Cup

USA rugby player Ilona Maher is contemplating an offer to participate in WWE wrestling as a stepping stone to Hollywood after the Women's Rugby World Cup that kicks off on Friday in England. "I've been approached before by the WWE," she told the BBC, joking that her ring name would be 'Maher-vellous'. "I should think about it, there is great money in it." Maher is the world's most followed rugby player with nearly nine million followers across Instagram and TikTok. She was also a contestant on 'Dancing with the Stars', posed for Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue and was named best breakthrough athlete at this year's Espys, ESPN's annual award show. "I would love to get into the acting space and the scripted space. I think a Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson, John Cena progression - I would love to do that," Maher said. "It would be exciting to see my body type on the screen. I'll start off small, probably like a hot assassin or something, let's not get too crazy. I'm not going to be in a rom-com just yet. "We'll see. The world is open, but I do see myself coming back to rugby."
