This Raksha Bandhan, brother's liver donation gives sister a lease of life at Mulund hospital

This Raksha Bandhan, a festival celebrating the special bond between brothers and sisters, took on a profound meaning for the Pathan family from Palanpur, Gujarat. Anas Pathan, 32, donated a portion of his liver to his younger sister Humera, 27, giving her a lease of life after she was diagnosed with advanced Wilson's Disease.
The liver transplant surgery was successfully performed on July 9 at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, Mumbai. Both siblings have since recovered and were discharged ahead of Raksha Bandhan, reinforcing the emotional importance of the festival for their family.
Humera's health journey has been fraught with challenges. The family first confronted Wilson's Disease, a rare genetic disorder that leads to toxic copper accumulation in organs, in 2017 when elder brother Owais was diagnosed. Routine screening of his siblings revealed that Humera, too, was suffering from the same disorder. Although she began chelation therapy in 2018, her condition progressively worsened. By early 2025, she exhibited severe symptoms, including advanced liver cirrhosis, jaundice, and abdominal swelling, indicating life-threatening complications.
On medical advice, the family sought expert consultation with Dr Vikram Raut, Director and Chief Surgeon at Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery at Fortis Hospital. Dr Raut and his team determined that Humera's only chance for recovery was a liver transplant. After a thorough evaluation, her brother Anas was identified as a perfect donor match.
Reflecting on his decision to donate, Anas said, 'She's my sister, and I didn't have to think twice about saving her'. He added, 'I was already ready', when it was confirmed he was a match. His family and friends supported his instinctive choice and were proud of his commitment and courage.
Dr Vikram Raut explained, 'Despite beginning chelation treatment in 2018, Humera's condition worsened, and the only option available was liver transplantation. We used the left lobe of her brother's liver for the transplant.' He emphasised that successful outcomes like Humera's highlight the importance of timely medical intervention and family support.
Raksha Bandhan, observed by millions across India, traditionally celebrates the protective bond between siblings. For the Pathan family, the festival now marks a personal story of sacrifice, resilience, and hope. With her life restored, Humera looks forward to returning to a semblance of normalcy with her husband, while Anas is eager to resume duties at his garment store.
Commenting on the outcome, Dr Vishal Beri, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Mulund, said, 'It's heartening to see young patients like Humera get a second chance. Organ failure at such a young age is devastating, but with timely diagnosis and the right care, recovery is possible. Kudos to our clinical and support teams. They don't just treat illnesses, they help people reclaim their lives.'

A sister's stem cell gift turns Raksha Bandhan into a true celebration of life

HYDERABAD: This Raksha Bandhan, 17-year-old Hashmitha gave her brother Bharath more than a thread; she gave him the gift of life. This year, the IV lines became their rakhi threads. What began as a sister's anxious vigil by her brother's hospital bed ended in a successful stem cell transplant just days before the festival, making this the most meaningful Rakhi celebration the siblings have ever known. Five-year-old Bharath from Mahbubnagar had battled ill health for over seven months. Initially diagnosed with jaundice, his condition worsened, and four months ago, doctors confirmed aplastic anaemia, a rare, life-threatening bone marrow failure. Frequent hospital visits became routine, and mounting medical bills added to the family's strain. Their mother quit her teaching job to care for him, while their father's business suffered. When doctors at a Hyderabad hospital recommended a bone marrow transplant, the family agreed without hesitation. Tests revealed that Hashmitha, an Intermediate student, was a perfect match. 'I saw my brother suffering for months and wanted to do anything to make him better,' she tells the TNIE. 'When doctors said my cells were the right match, I felt both hopeful and happy, knowing he could finally come home.' The transplant was performed on July 24. On Saturday, still in the hospital, Hashmitha tied a rakhi on Bharath's wrist — her stem cells already working to heal him. 'I could finally touch my brother and see him smile after four months,' she says, holding back tears. 'I feel fortunate to have helped. I'd urge everyone not to fear donating blood or stem cells; it's safe and can save a life.' Bharath is now showing steady recovery and is expected to be discharged in the coming days.

Fatty liver: Why even healthy, fit people are at risk and don't know about it

You may feel healthy, look fit, and go about your day without much trouble-but your liver might be silently waving a red flag. Fatty liver disease, once linked only with alcohol abuse, is now showing up in women, children, fitness enthusiasts, and even teetotallers. It's quiet. It's sneaky. And if you miss the early signs, the consequences can be far-reaching. What causes fatty liver? In one word-lifestyle Your liver suffers when you consume that packet of instant noodles, deep-fried chips, frozen pizza, or a sugary iced coffee from a café. These contemporary food choices, which are loaded with hydrogenated fats, refined sugars, palm oil, and preservatives, overwhelm the liver with toxins that it cannot adequately process. And it's not just adults-children as young as 10 are showing early signs of fatty liver, thanks to soft drinks, junk food, and a lack of physical activity. 7 Ways to check for fatty liver at home Alcohol, of course, remains a major culprit-but it's not the only one. Even non-drinkers develop what's now called Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). Sedentary habits, stress, irregular sleep cycles, late-night eating, and skipping meals all contribute to sluggish liver function and fat accumulation in liver cells. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Tan Dinh: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo So how does the body signal that something is off? Until blood reports raise concerns, these subtle symptoms-such as persistent fatigue, dull skin, slight pain or heaviness under your right rib, frequent bloating, mood swings, trouble losing belly fat, and even bad breath-are frequently disregarded. The good news? Your liver has an extraordinary power to regenerate-if you allow it to. Here's how to begin healing naturally: Begin your mornings with warm water, lemon juice, and a pinch of grated ginger. It stimulates bile flow and aids detox. Add Ayurvedic herbs like punarnava, kalmegh, bhumyamalaki, and kutki under guidance-they are powerful liver rejuvenators. Ditch processed food and embrace whole grains like jowar, bajra, ragi, and red rice. Use mustard oil, ghee, or cold-pressed oils. Snack on soaked walnuts, almonds, and seeds. Healthy fats help flush stored liver fat. Move your body. Walk, stretch, do yoga-or dance to your favourite song. Prioritise sleep and reduce stress. The liver repairs at night, and stress hormones only worsen the condition. Your liver is your body's detox factory. Treat it with the respect it deserves, and it will return the favour with lifelong vitality. Don't wait for a report to remind you start the reversal today. Monica B.
