BBC Scotland cuts coverage of Edinburgh's festivals

It will be staging only five days of events with ticketed audiences after deciding to share space with the Pleasance Courtyard and the EICC. Stand-up comedian Mark Nelson will also be returning with a festivals highlights programme, Edinburgh Unlocked, for the BBC Scotland channel. Read more: More than 100 shows have recorded or broadcast live across at least two weeks by the BBC since it started running its own pop-up venue during the summer festivals in 2011. The line-up had gradually expanded to include programmes for the UK radio network, the BBC Scotland TV channel and Radio Scotland, the iPlayer and the BBC Sounds platform. BBC Scotland is based at Pacific Quay in Glasgow. (Image: Newsquest) The BBC's pop-up venue drew thousands of ticket-holders to the visitor attraction Dynamic Earth every day during the 2023 and 2024 festivals. Special guests included singer-songwriters Kyle Falconer, Richard Jobson and Tom Robinson, authors Denise Mina, Ian Rankin, Val McDermid and Andrew O'Hagan, actors Brian Cox, Jack Docherty and Miriam Margolyes, comics Connor Burns, Frank Skinner and Susie McCabe, and theatre-makers Cora Bissett, Kieran Hurley and Gary McNair. The BBC's pop-up venue was previously set up in the grounds of George Heriot's School, and at sites at Potterrow and High School Yards. Stars who appeared in shows included comics Paul Merton, Nicholas Parsons, Tim Vine, Lucy Porter, Susan Calman and Russell Kane, writers Jackie Kay, Louise Welsh, Stig Abell and Alexander McCall Smith, and singer-songwriters Edwyn Collins and Rachel Sermanni. The cuts in coverage of the Edinburgh festivals, which have emerged a few months into the tenure of new BBC Scotland director Hayley Valentine. A spokesperson for the BBC said: "The BBC will return to the Edinburgh festivals with shows coming from the EICC and the Pleasance Courtyard between August 4 and 8. "Our coverage will include ticketed events for audiences to attend recordings and live broadcasts of BBC Radio Scotland and BBC Radio 4 shows. "Edinburgh Unlocked presented by Mark Nelson will also return to the BBC Scotland channel, giving audiences a backstage pass to all the best of the Fringe and the wider festivals. "We will also continue to provide special reports from the Edinburgh festivals across news tv, radio and online throughout August. "Details of our programming line-up will be announced in due course.' The scaling back of Edinburgh's festivals coverage has emerged following a number of recent controversies over the BBC's output in Scotland. There was anger last year over a shake-up in Radio Scotland's music programming and its impact on long-running specialist shows on jazz, classical music and piping. The BBC also came came under fire when it announced that its hour-long news programme The Nine would be scrapped just five years after its launch on a new BBC Scotland channel and replaced with a new early evening show, The Seven, which was launched in January. However fresh controversy erupted in March when the BBC announced that it would be bringing the long-running drama series River City to an end, with the budget for the show redirected towards three dramas. More than 12,000 supporters have backed a petition to save the show, while a politicians joined cast and crew to stage a protest outside the Scottish Parliament building at Holyrood. The BBC said the show, which has been on air since 2002 and is due to end in the autumn of 2026, was no longer offering "value for money." The BBC spokesperson added: "The BBC works within an increasingly competitive marketplace and tight budget constraints. "We have to make tough decisions to ensure we are delivering value for money which inevitably means evolving our offer accordingly whilst remaining committed to covering the Edinburgh festivals across all platforms."

Why is the BBC cutting coverage of Edinburgh's festivals?

A dedicated pop-up venue to host live broadcasts and recordings has been dropped, despite thousands of ticket-holders flocking to shows and events over the three-week festival. Read more: The BBC, which launched its own venue in 2011, will instead use spaces at the Pleasance Courtyard and the EICC for a scaled-down programme. The BBC had gradually expanded its summer festivals coverage by making some of its best-known Radio Scotland and UK network radio programmes at the pop-up site. But the cultural celebration appears to have fallen victim to a long-running spending squeeze within the BBC, which has been lobbying for reform of the licence fee ahead of its current charter ending in 2027. The BBC's income is said to have fallen by around 30 per cent in real terms since 2010 because the licence fee has not been increased in line with inflation. Director-general Tim Davie, who told the Scottish Parliament in January that the broadcaster was having to operate under 'very tight financial constraints." The BBC has revealed that it is having to make around £700 million worth of annual savings to balance its books. Earlier this month Mr Davie made a fresh call for reform of the licence fee and called for an investigation into the impact of what he described as 'begrudging, grinding cuts.' BBC Scotland has become embroiled in a number of controversies over its output in Scotland, most recently after announcing plans to bring the long-running soap opera River City to an end. More than 12,000 supporters have backed a petition to save the show, while a politicians joined cast and crew to stage a protest outside the Scottish Parliament building at Holyrood. The BBC said the show, which has been on air since 2002 and is due to end in the autumn of 2026, was no longer offering "value for money." Love Island first look as pair face the wrath of their actions and an explosive re-coupling

Get ready for tonight's explosive episode of Love Island, packed with steamy kisses, shocking confessions and a game changing recoupling. Here's your exclusive first look... Following a drama-packed episode of Love Island last night which saw Islander Ben lose his temper with American bombshell Toni, admitting she'd given him the 'ick' and a saucy game of dares featuring kisses, lap dances and jaw-dropping confessions, it's clear the drama inside the Mallorcan villa is only just heating up. Kisses were flying in every direction, with signs of major couple shake-ups on the horizon. But the real shock came at the end, as Shakira and Blu secretly slipped into the hideaway for a surprise snog - leaving viewers on the edge of their seats, eager to see the fallout. ‌ But as we wait for the drama to unfold, here is your sneak peek into tonight's episode of the hit ITV show. ‌ There is no hiding in the Hideaway on this season of Love Island, as the episode begins with Blu and Shakira leaving the private suite and the other Islanders have plenty of questions for them, wasting no time in grilling them. Blu heads straight for a group of Islanders and fills them in on the fact they shared a sneaky kiss. When Dejon asks Blu: "What did you do in there? A chat?", Blu bluntly replies: "No, we had a kiss, I went in for her." Megan's responded in shock "I love the messiness!" Elsewhere, Harry and Helena are getting cosy by the mini fire-pit. Harry asks: "Are we still on for the Hideaway?" But before they can sneak away, Dejon interrupts to spill the tea, saying: "You know he (Blue) kissed her (Shakira)?" Stunned, Harry says: "No he didn't…I don't believe what I'm hearing." ‌ Meanwhile Shakira fills in Toni: "Blu pulled me for a chat and he went, 'I didn't kiss you in the challenge 'cause I wanted to do it now' and he just leaned in…it was a good kiss but it says a statement, I feel like Ben won't be happy and Harry especially." Confronting the conversation, Harry tells Shakira: "All that matters is I want to pursue things with you." But Blu doesn't back down, later telling Harry: "We had two kisses, where's your head at? It seems to me your with Helena more and flirting?" ‌ Harry drops a shocking confession, telling Blu: "I think it's more flirty, but I think Shakira's got more substance." Later that night, Harry and Helena finally attempt to sneak off to the Hideaway, hoping no one will see them - but their plan doesn't go unnoticed... The next morning, the Islander's have questions after Harry and Helena's not so secret trip to the Hideaway. Helena pulls Shakira aside: "I wanted to speak to you 'cause I don't want you to think it was done in a malicious way." But how will Shakira react to Helena's confession? ‌ Shakira doesn't seem to be buying it, telling Harry when he pulls her for a chat: "Don't act like you went to the Hideaway cause I kissed someone, you wanted to go…" Things take another twist when Shakira has a chat with Ben that might just reignite an old flame. ‌ The day's drama reaches an all time high when Meg receives a text announcing: "Islanders, tonight there will be a recoupling in which the girls will choose which boy they want to couple up with #SpoiltForChoice #VillaVibesAreShifting." Toni sums it up best: "Tables have turned," and the boys are left to wonder if they've done enough. As the Islanders gather at the fire pit and the girls prepare their speeches, everyone is wondering - will they stick or twist? But that's not all for this re-coupling, just as the Islanders thing its over, another surprise text arrives that none of the Islanders had seen coming…
