An Inventive Koreatown Ice Cream Shop Is Closing After Just Eight Months

Liu's Creamery, an extension of Hong Kong and Taiwanese bakery and cafe Liu's, is closing at the beginning of August after about eight months in the neighborhood. The ice cream spot, which started scooping in January 2025, will have its last day of business on August 3. Liu's Creamery, located right next door to Liu's Cafe, serves Asian-inflected ice cream, including Taiwan milk tea, honey toast, and ginger pear. Pastry chef Isabell Manibusan, who also oversees desserts at Liu's Cafe and modern Korean restaurant Danbi, developed the menu for Liu's Creamery.
The closure was announced in an Instagram post on July 24. Liu's Creamery will operate from Friday through Sunday, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., until its closure. Liu's Cafe will not be affected by the closure. Though the closure is a loss for the neighborhood, the post promises that something 'exciting' will take its place soon.

Notable Los Angeles barman Matthew Biancaniello will embark on a 21-mile swim from Catalina Island to Palos Verdes on September 25. While we often see foreign-body ingestion, it's not every day something gets stuck quite like this," McLaren said. Unexpectedly consumed items are no surprise in the pet world. In 2023, pet medical insurance company Trupanion reported that it handled 24,000 foreign-body ingestion claims in pets. The average claim was $878, while the highest claim was $27,403. The clinic shared a video of the moment on Instagram where it has been viewed more than 540,000 times. In the comments, people shared their reactions. "Sooo he bit more than he could chew," joked one viewer, while another said: "They just wanted to be a drummer." "Miss Koda is still cute," wrote a third commenter. "Even with a Zen drum stuck to her snoot." Not all feedback was friendly, though. Some social-media users suggested the procedure must have cost the owner thousands and accused veterinarians of profiteering. But McLaren said: "Just to put things into perspective—the total cost of the procedure was $259. It's not about a money grab. It's about caring for animals." I don't get to eat dinner at home too often, and when I do, I'm usually reaching for something low-lift to supplement leftovers. Now in rotation is frozen pasta from Sfoglia Club, the one-woman micro-batch pasta company from Tanaya Joshi. A product designer by day, she folds intricate filled pastas by night and sells them via Hotplate. The drop model will be familiar to any sneakerhead, and her batches of balanzoni and tortelli sell out quickly. I got my hands on a couple boxes of sachetti — Joshi's version kind of look like hamentaschen but with four sides instead of three — stuffed with ricotta, corn and chives. The filling is very delicate; I've been saucing the sachetti ($20 per box) with butter, Calabrian chile and Parmesan so as not to overpower it. I didn't intend for this week's installment to be What I've Been Eating, Corn Edition, but facts are facts: Restaurants are exulting in corn season, and I am happily along for the ride. At Lunette in the Ferry Building, chef Nite Yun stir-fries fresh kernels with coconut milk, chicken schmaltz, dried shrimp and scallions. Yun modestly told me that the wok does all the work — the corn takes on just a touch of char — to which I say, 'Yeah, right.' It's a glorious summer side dish that I can't wait to eat again. Lunette. Ferry Building, 1, Suite 33/47, San Francisco. Over in Emeryville, Good to Eat also has a seasonal sweet corn special. For $14, you get two half-ears of corn, skewered and grilled. The singed cobs are then lacquered with shacha, a Taiwanese barbecue sauce, and coated in sesame seeds. If 'barbecue sauce' conjures up memories of sticky-sweet Kansas City ribs or tangy, vinegary Carolina pulled pork, shacha is something else entirely — savory and briny thanks to dried shellfish.
