Boxing legend Mike Tyson backs new ice cream with unexpected ingredients: 'Something that I am truly passionate about'

Due to a rise in environmental concerns and awareness of animal cruelty, veganism has grown from a small niche diet to an $8.1 billion industry in the U.S. alone in the last 15 years, according to SPINS data shared by the Good Food Institute.
The rise in popularity also has a lot to do with accessibility to fast-food favorites like Beyond Meat and Impossible Burger, as well as restaurants like Mr. Charlie's in Los Angeles — which has been dubbed the "vegan McDonald's."
To celebrate the third anniversary of Mr. Charlie's, the restaurant partnered with its newest investor, none other than boxing legend Mike Tyson, by introducing a vanilla ice cream made from potatoes called "Mr. Fluff-Head." The ice cream is topped with a "Mike's Bites" ear-shaped chocolate.
"When we started Mr. Charlie's, we set out to shake things up, and this launch is no different," co-founder of Mr. Charlie's, Taylor McKinnon, shared with VegNews. "Mr. Fluff-Head is the kind of innovative product we stand for: big on flavor, better for you, and made with real ingredients."
While Swedish brand DUG has been a pioneer behind potatoes as a milk alternative in the E.U., potatoes have yet to hit the mainstream like soy and oat milk have in the U.S.
But the production process is quite similar to the options we know and love. Potatoes are boiled, blended, and then mixed with water, rapeseed oil, and a few other ingredients to go from starchy to creamy.
Tyson made his investment through his holding company, Carma HoldCo, as he is a long-time fan of the plant-based diet as well as giving back to the community.
Mr. Charlie's offers employment opportunities to those who are overcoming hardships, and Tyson wants to accelerate the company's expansion plans to nurture both the plant-based and struggling communities.
"Mr. Charlie's is a natural choice for Carma HoldCo, as we diversify into the food industry," Tyson told VegNews. "I very much believe in the healthy benefits of a vegan diet and [I] was a strict vegan for many years.
"I'm proud to align myself with partners bringing healthy alternatives that taste good to the fast-food space. Mr. Charlie's mission to help and hire those from the homeless community is something that I am truly passionate about, and I look forward to helping many people and communities with the expansion of Mr. Charlie's across the globe."

Mr. Charlie's says its impact has included saving 70 million gallons of water, 1.4 million pounds of CO2, 2 million square feet of forest, and 100,000 animals.
Vegans are responsible for 75% less planet-warming gases than those who eat meat, according to a University of Oxford study summarized by the New York Times.
Vegan diets are associated with low cholesterol, lower body fat, higher fiber intake, lower blood pressure, and less brain fog.
While Veganuary has passed for the year, maybe a plant-based burger and ice cream at Mr. Charlie's would be a good way to celebrate Earth Day.

‘Vanguard,' About Swedish Mogul Jan Stenbeck, Sells to Multiple Territories: ‘Him and Trump Are Both Extremely Divisive Figures' (EXCLUSIVE)

'Vanguard,' a drama about Swedish mogul Jan Stenbeck, has sold to TG4 (Ireland), ERR (Estonia), Viaplay SVOD on Amazon Prime (U.S., U.K., Poland), Viaplay Select on Cindie (LatAm), Prima+ (Czech Republic) and Vodafone (Greece), Variety has found out exclusively. FLX's Lejla Bešic produced the five-episode show – about to premiere at Monte Carlo TV Festival – for SVT in collaboration with the N8 alliance, while Viaplay Content Distribution handles international sales. More from Variety Jason Priestley on Why 'BH90210' Got Canceled, and Why He Would Act in 'Euphoria' If He Were a Young Star 'The Tourist,' Starring Jamie Dornan, Wins Best Series at Monte-Carlo Television Festival 'The Reunion' Star Ioan Gruffudd, Director Bill Eagles, Producer Sydney Gallonde on Remaining Faithful to Guillaume Musso's Novel The story, based on Per Andersson's biography 'Stenbeck: A Biography of a Successful Businessman,' kicks off with Stenbeck (played by Jakob Oftebro, known for 'Black Crab' and 'Hamilton') returning to the family he has spent his whole life rejecting. Just like … Michael Corleone. 'I wanted to do a homage to 'The Godfather,'' laughed director Goran Kapetanović. He's happy, working in New York and romancing an American socialite. But when tragedy strikes, twice, he needs to lead his family's industrial group. The king is dead. Long live the king. 'He was this prince, living in the U.S., and then the king asked him to go back to Sweden. But he just painted the whole castle pink,' said Kapetanović. Stenbeck had ideas of his own, ultimately breaking Sweden's telephone monopoly and launching Scandinavia's first commercial channel TV3. 'He was a gambler – that's how he lived his life. Later, he was addicted to food and alcohol and just destroyed himself. It's quite tragic, this portrait of a strong, powerful man who deals with so many things but remains oblivious to his family, for example.' It was the complicated family dynamic that attracted Alex Haridi. He wrote the script with Lotta Erikson and Helene Lindholm. 'I also have a very, very complicated relationship with my sister. When I started reading about Jan, that part opened my eyes: it's like watching Greek gods, fighting and having all these conflicts, and everything they do trickles down to ordinary people. I can see things in my own life that are a direct result of these siblings not getting along back in the early 80s.' He added: 'He really impacted our lives in Sweden, and he wasn't even meant to run the company! He was the youngest of four children. Then he steps in and becomes this enormous figure. I don't want to put an equal sign between him and Trump, but they are both extremely divisive figures. People call him the savior or the devil. In a sense, he's both. And neither.' Their lead actor had to capture this duality, too. 'Jan can be likeable. There's something mystical about him and a little bit childish. I've been looking all over Sweden, then I turned to Norway and the only guy who could speak all three Scandinavian languages was Jakob,' recalled Kapetanović. 'It was a bit risky because of the accent, but he did a Swedish show before. Now, we have a Norwegian guy playing one of the most important Swedish guys. I'm so proud of it.' Haridi noted: 'I just remember watching Jakob during the casting process. He was so charming, so warm and wonderful. And then there was this point when everything shifts. All of a sudden, it felt icky. He really carries the show.' Oftebro is joined by Zoe Boyle, Malin Crepin, Julia Marko Nord, Iggy Malmborg and Niklas Engdahl. While 'Vanguard' had to be 'very, very factually correct,' admitted Haridi, the actual family wasn't involved. 'We talked to lots of people around the family and around the company. The family itself was informed the series was being written and made, but they didn't want to participate.' Instead, the team focused on making the story appealing to younger viewers – Stenbeck passed away in 2002 – and finding a way to combine his personal struggles with massive changes in the media landscape he was very much a part of. 'In the 1970s, there were educational programs everywhere, and then people realized they could make money. They just said: 'We want to give people what they want.' That's basically what Steinbeck said, too: 'We'll give Swedish people what they want to see.' There's a beautiful scene in the fourth episode when he's talking to these Italian Berlusconi types [Berlusconi was a founder of Mediaset]. That's why we're getting so many trashy TV shows these days.' 'There's a lot of business talk [in the show], so we had to balance it out, making sure there's always something emotional going on underneath,' added Haridi. 'Even if you don't understand exactly what they're talking about in business terms, there's a personal story you can follow. Having these two layers in every scene was the right way to do it.' 'At the end, it really comes down to family, to all of them competing with each other,' observed Kapetanović. 'You win some, you lose some and at the end you wonder: Was it worth it or not?' Entertainment world reacts to Greta Thunberg interception in Gaza-bound aid boat

Early on Monday morning, Israeli forces intercepted and seized a boat called the Madleen, which was heading to Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid in what activists said was a protest against Israel's ongoing military campaign in the Gaza Strip. A group of activists, including Greta Thunberg, will be returned to their home countries after the Gaza-bound boat they were travelling on was seized, Israeli authorities said. Israel's Foreign Ministry dismissed the voyage as a public relations stunt, saying in a post on X that "the 'selfie yacht' of the 'celebrities' is safely making its way to the shores of Israel." Thunberg shared news of the campaign in a video update on 2 June that saw her wear a Fontaines D.C. charity jersey and raise awareness for the 'Freedom Flotilla' trip, with the boat departing from Italy. The group has claimed that authorities had 'forcibly intercepted' the boat and acted with 'total impunity.' Huwaida Arraf, a Freedom Flotilla organiser, shared: 'Israel has no legal authority to detain international volunteers aboard the Madleen. These volunteers are not subject to Israeli jurisdiction and cannot be criminalised for delivering aid or challenging an illegal blockade - their detention is arbitrary, unlawful, and must end immediately.' Thunberg accused Israel of "kidnapping" her and reached out for global support. In a statement, she said: 'I urge all my friends, family, and comrades to put pressure on the Swedish government to release me and the others as soon as possible'. The entertainment world has responded to the interception of the boat. Legendary rock band Garbage reshared a post that called for 'the release of all involved immediately,' and before posting an update with the caption: 'All eyes on the @gazafreedomflotilla . Let aid in. What is happening to the Palestinians is monstrous. How many more dead children do we have to see before the world acts?!?' Singer-songwriter Cat Power shared an update on Instagram pushing for the release of Thunberg and the activists. 'We demand the immediate release of all 12 hostages taken by Israel in violation of international law,' the singer shared in the caption, before listing out the names of those who were onboard the Madleen. 'THE WORLD MUST ACT NOW. THIS IS A CRISIS.' Norwegian singer Aurora shared an update that claimed the Israeli government offered Thunberg the option to 'attack, arrest, or turn back', while Irish rap group Kneecap shared an earlier update that said: 'Solidarity with Liam Cunningham (Game Of Thrones actor) and all on the 'freedom flotilla' to Gaza'. British singer-songwriter Nadine Shah also shared a video made by an activist on the Madleen, which said: 'This is not the world you want to leave behind to your children. When you look into the faces of your children, know there are children in Gaza, the same age, and they have the same rights. They have the right to live in dignity, they have the right to live free. They have the right to just live. Do everything in your power, keep your eyes on us and remember why we are here. You need to do the real work, and that is to stop your government from sending weapons to Israel to commit these war crimes and atrocities.' Bambie Thug, last year's Eurovision entry for Ireland, also reposted an update that read: 'We demand that Madleen is allowed to land safely and peacefully in Gaza with all activists unharmed', while author Matt Haig shared the following regarding Greta Thunberg and the criticism aimed at the young activist: 'Like her. Don't like her. But she is the opposite of 'performative'. She is literally heading into a genocide with a target on her back.' After an almost three-month blockade aimed at pressuring Hamas, Israel started allowing some basic aid into Gaza last month. Humanitarian workers and experts say it is not enough and have warned of famine unless the blockade is lifted and Israel ends its military offensive. An attempt last month by Freedom Flotilla to reach Gaza by sea failed after another of the group's vessels was attacked by two drones while sailing in international waters off Malta, organisers said. The group blamed Israel for the attack, which damaged the front section of the ship.
