
A new chapter for publishing? Book subscription services launch their own titles
This is presumably why there's a strong appetite for such services: UK fantasy subscription box FairyLoot has 569,000 followers on Instagram alone, and many bookshops have started sending out their own boxes.
Now, some of these businesses have decided not just to sell books, but to publish their own: In January, FairyLoot announced a collaboration with Transworld, a division of Penguin Random House, while last week Canada-based subscription service OwlCrate launched OwlCrate Press.
Jordan Fleming, head of publishing at OwlCrate, has described publishing as a 'broken industry', telling industry magazine the Bookseller that the publishing wing had been set up to 'eventually address a lot of the issues the industry is facing'.
Which issues they're seeking to address is unclear. It's fair to see where they could influence things – they have an understanding of their subscribers and can cater to that market well as a result. But curating is not the same as publishing; quality and influence are two different things. Could this mark a potentially monumental shift in the industry?
'Book boxes and book subscription services are hugely valuable to publishers,' says Jon Petre, an editor at Profile Books. 'Books can get a significant guaranteed sale on publication day through them … A big order of instant sales can land an author straight on the bestseller list. Even if it's just for a week, the author will be Sunday Times-bestselling for the rest of their career.' Petre says.
Hariny Vanniarajan, who is signed up to subscription service Illumincrate, feels that the books she receives in the box are 'representative of marginalised voices that we don't often find in mainstream publishing.'
'As a south Indian, I truly enjoy the great variety of authors and cultures I'm being introduced to,' she says. 'These are books I normally might not have picked up because I wouldn't have known about them.'

Sisters Elizabeth and Helen, who have co-written fantasy novels including the Sunday Times bestseller Bonded by Thorns using the pen name Elizabeth Helen, say that working with FairyLoot has been an 'incredible boost' for their career. The US-based authors say they have 'cultivated a huge fanbase' in the UK specifically through editions sold by FairyLoot.
It makes sense, then, that subscription services want to push their curation skills further, by commissioning, editing, and publishing titles that aren't already in the world. They have a guaranteed customer base, a strong sense of the titles that work for them and the ability to create exclusive editions. It's a pretty powerful sales pitch to any bidding writer.
'In a market where customers are spending more money on fewer books, a guaranteed sale can be the difference between making a loss or breaking even for a debut author.' Petre says. Given that book ownership is also in decline, there are plenty of reasons to see such businesses as a stable alternative in a choppy industry. Those who do spend on books often 'crave a gorgeous physical edition to hold in their hands and display on their shelves,' Elizabeth and Helen say.
While you can argue that putting a book you've commissioned and published into the hands of a dedicated audience isn't any more of a bestseller manipulation than choosing a book that already exists, there's a point to make about the magic and purity of a subscription service being lost by such a move.
You can consider this pivot an equivalent of Netflix or Mubi launching original works instead of merely curating them. Has that been a success? Not entirely. While they present new opportunities for individuals, they also present monopolies at large. As with all things art, it's subjective: Vanniarajan says she wouldn't necessarily be put off if Illumincrate started putting books it had published itself in her box. 'They have built a huge following and seem to understand their audience well, so I assume they'd continue this integrity when choosing authors to work with,' she says.
But if you're after an expert's recommendations to bolster and surprise your library, as opposed to a powerhouse choosing titles for you, consider supporting a local bookshop's services instead.

Christian Horner sees final Red Bull F1 ties cut as new company director named
Team principal and chief executive Christian Horner was removed from both those roles last month and has now had his departure from Red Bull Racing and its related companies officially confirmed Red Bull has severed its final ties to ousted former Formula 1 team principal Christian Horner. It marks the official confirmation of the 51-year-old's departure from the racing team and its related companies after he was removed as team principal and chief executive last month. Horner was a named director across three companies set up in the UK. He was chief executive not only of the F1 racing team, but also of Red Bull Technologies Ltd, and of Red Bull Powertrains – the latter set up when the team decided to build its own engines for the first time ahead of the 2026 season. But Horner's exit means he will not be the man in charge of the outfit when it first goes racing with those new power units next year. He was relieved of all his responsibility following the British Grand Prix in July, pending the negotiation of his full departure. And it seems that the terms of his exit have now ben agreed. Companies House filings, received on Thursday, show that Horner has been terminated as a director of all three companies concerned with the operations of the F1 team. The filings also show the appointment of a new director in his place, namely Stefan Salzer who is global head of human resources at the racing team's Austria-based parent company, Red Bull GmbH. The only other director of Red Bull Racing now is Helmut Marko, who serves as an adviser to the main Red Bull company regarding its efforts in F1. Oliver Mintzlaff, as chief executive of Red Bull's corporate projects and new investments, is the de-facto chief of the company's motorsport teams. His only public comments to date have been made on social media platform Instagram, including the lengthy statement he issued in the aftermath of his dismissal. Canada minister urges Air Canada, union to return to bargaining table as strike looms
MONTREAL/OTTAWA, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Canadian Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu on Thursday urged Air Canada ( opens new tab and the union representing its flight attendants to return to the bargaining table to reach a deal that could avert a strike set to start this Saturday. A spokesperson for the Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents the carrier's 10,000 flight attendants, said Air Canada negotiators have not returned to bargaining and have not responded to a proposal they made earlier this week. "We believe the company wants the federal government to intervene and bail them out," a CUPE spokesperson told Reuters. The union added that Air Canada has "been completely missing in action from the bargaining table since Tuesday evening, despite a looming shutdown." In a statement, Hajdu also said Air Canada had asked her to refer the dispute to binding arbitration. She said she had asked the union to respond to this request. CUPE has previously said it opposes binding arbitration and wants a negotiated settlement. Air Canada was not immediately available for comment. The Montreal-based company said on Wednesday it would be cancelling flights from Thursday, as the country's largest carrier winds down service through Saturday. FlightAware data shows Air Canada has, thus far, cancelled only four flights as of Thursday morning. A strike would hit the country's tourism sector during the height of summer travel. Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge carry about 130,000 customers a day. Air Canada is also the foreign carrier with the largest number of flights to the U.S. U.S. carrier United Airlines (UAL.O), opens new tab, a code share partner of Air Canada, said it is working with customers to get them to their destinations and has issued a travel waiver to help them manage their travel plans.

Hot U.S. inflation data rattles global bond markets
LONDON/SINGAPORE, Aug 14 (Reuters) - U.S. stagflation fears seeped into global markets on Thursday after surprisingly hot inflation data applied heavy pressure to U.S. Treasuries and sparked selling of government bonds everywhere from Germany to Japan. Wall Street stocks took a hit too, with futures contracts tracking the domestically-focused Russell 2000 share index , which dropped 1.2% in the minutes after official data revealed an unexpectedly large jump in U.S. producer prices. The producer prices index, which investors have been watching for signs of pipeline inflation pressures from U.S. President Donald Trump's trade tariffs, rose 0.9% in July from the month before, trouncing consensus forecasts for a 0.2% gain. European stocks (.STOXX), opens new tab held on to gains from earlier in the day and were last 0.2% higher, while Wall Street's S&P 500 index was set to fall about 0.4%. Two-year Treasury yields, which track monetary policy expectations, leaped by 4.3 basis points (bps) immediately after the data to 3.73% as expectations for jumbo Fed rate cuts faded . Money markets showed traders still almost unanimously expect the Federal Reserve to lower borrowing costs next month after keeping its main funds rate at 4.25%-4.5% since December. Trump on Wednesday threatened "severe consequences" if Putin did not agree to peace in Ukraine and has also floated the idea of a second summit that would include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Brent crude, the global oil marker, rose from almost a two-month low with a 1.2% jump to $66.39 a barrel and U.S. crude added 1.3% to $63.43 . But spot gold prices , which tend to rise when investors focus on geopolitical and inflation risks, bucked the market trend and edged 0.2% lower to $3,346 an ounce.
